Title: My Senator
Post by: tunnie on 14 January 2007, 14:35:29
Well gave it a good ish clean today, still needs a really good clean but its too cold out!

Stats for people who missed the earlier thread:

12 month mot, new exhaust, new heater matrix, 2 new rear tyres, everything works,  bar 1 leccy window and heated seats.
cost me 300 quid!  :D

Pictures here:

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1168785272/0#0

Learnt a few more things today, the Air-Con works!!!  :o :D

Autobox nice and smooth now, new fluid working nicely.

Adjustable suspension works, feels like a big difference between sport and comfort, have to say the surge feeling in comfort is fun!  :D Heated seats unplugged ... try to plug them and i could't get it to plug in, looks right and they should connect but it refuses to clip on.

Pulled out the rear blind... OOOOPS now it won't retract!  :-[ - Its just folded up now on the parcel shelf  :(

On the whole very pleased, very comfy more so than the Omega and will sit @ 90 all day long  :)

Bad bits, needs chrome trim on the back bumper. Not sure if i will bother replacing that until i come across one. Slight bubbling to the rear arches, boot needs a clean.

I've given it a spin today.  Big, comfy, nice noise pulling from idle :y

Something not quite purring right on the engine - cruises nicely, but acceleration seems a little down - I reckon my MV6 would easily beat it to 90mph (on our private road obviously ;)).  I suspect after been sat idle for ages, it needs a bit of TLC, fresh oil, and some injector treatment, then see how it runs from there...

I've given Tunnie a list of things to do. ;)

Also a new fuel filter will not go amiss and check the dual ram system.

Under the "Dual Ram" cover on top of the engine is the dual ram vacuum point. With the engine off pull the vac hose. It should give an noticable hiss. If it doesn't then there is a leak.

Of course the other test is more fun.

Drive car in sport mode, hold at about 3,500rpm.
Now put foot down.  :D
If you don't feel the extra push at 4,000rpm ish, then there is certainly a leak!

I am pretty certain it is the same fuel filter.

It would make sense as it is used on much of the Vauxhall range.

You were right Dave, there is just something about them. So far:

It handles better than my Omega (MV6 prob tad better though)
gets same mpg IF NOT better!!!
its more comfy
sounds like heaven
goes like the clappers even with the cats on and not chipped
the headlights are BETTER than my Omega!

The only area were my Omega is slightly better is wind noise....

Looking underneath today doing the coolant flush, i can reach the oil filter. No need to jack it up!

The gap is down the middle? Ie you have the handle and flap to lift and select gear, the arm that goes down into the box. That strip which hides the internal workings is missing. So dust and crud can fall in.

You can see what gear u are in, D 321 ect.... its the tiny thin strip in the middle thats missing

Blimey!!  :o

Btw what was that buzzing sound, i mentioned it when i was at yours but forgot  :-[

It comes from the underneath the drivers side door really, wheel arch area.

When the car was idling, and you went, P-R-N-D.. you put it into D and it came on quite loud. Did not do it in 3,2,1 just D & R & P.

Give the car a little gas no more than 1k rpm, let it idle again and the sound had gone  :-/

Ohh hows your little project going, get it running?

Have you changed it then? if yes dont forget you can only get less than half out by draining the sumps!! you have to drain it about three times each one after a few runs(ten miles or so) to pump the old out of the torque converter and the new in!! unless you disconnect the oil cooler pipes and start the engine!! thats messy but is gauranteed to get all the fluid out in one go!!
it holds about 11 litres or sossmething like that!!!

Yes, the fun of getting it out of the torque convertor....
Like the idea od removing the return pipe and starting... as long as it's not my car it's being done on! ;)

I am trying to remember how much they hold. I think it is around 9.4 litres.

 Hi Tunnie,
Looks like you got a really nice one in the end :y.

What colour is it, Silver or Grey :question.

When you do the oil change be very careful when doing up the sump bolt as they are so easily stripped, best use a Torque wrench(talking from experience :'().

And don't forget i've got a 24Valver sitting on my drive if you need any bits.

  Good luck,
                Pete :).

LB66... Graham helped me with the fluid, although it was a top up really, and not a drain. When he has a free half day I am planning to pop over to his with all the bits needed to give it a damn good service.

What kind of fluid shall i buy for the auto box? - Got a TC number here, going to try and use that on the dealer down the road for some oil filters.

Sure am.

Drove the Omega back to uni last night because the Senny needs a little TLC before more long runs, the Omega is a fine car. Cruised at 80 fine, instant consumption reading 39mpg.

However, it's just not as fun as the Senator. Some berk in a new Mini Cooper up my backside comming back, god i wish i was in the Senator then to blow them into the weeds up the cutting on the M40 (steep hill section)

if you want to see somewhere fun to use the sennie's grunt to embarrass the wannabe boy racers.....  check out Rhuallt hill on the A55 coast road in north Wales.

start at the bottom doing 70....  accelerate rapidly up it, going over the top at xxx mph....   ...

takes the smiles off the faces of the majority of other drivers !

especially as it includes some fairly wide sweeping S curves on the way...

going up Broadway hill in the cotswolds is also worth a wry smile.......   tight corners,, and steep hills....   Senators love em....

Not so easy with that car as at the time it had blown the 3.54 diff and was running a 4.41 diff with maximum speed being just into three figures rather than quite a bit more

I know that one - Fish Hill, same trip to CA nearly lost the Sunbeam taking the corners too fast, only slowed for the three corners, overtook a loony as well!!!

Loony = someone who overtakes when not safe and is generally a pest - this one was a PITA around Evesham.

I blew the Carlton gear box on Crickley hill!!!! - ended up PXing for my first Omega

Depends on what time it is. During the day lanes 1 2 & 3 are full of HGV's and at night the 'middle lane owner muppets' change into 'lane 3 muppets' for the duration of the hill doing 65/70.  >:(

Its amazing the amount of cars (or drivers) that cant cope well with that hill.
Much prefer going up it to coming down.
I like the same sort of thing on the M62 just before J22 (sowerby bridge) where you have the extra lane, great fun.
Used to be a real PITA( before it was realigned and levelled out a bit ) if you got stuck behind a convoy of caravan towing cars going up the hill at 20 mph

i have been behind a few caravans going a good speed, but in genera (when driven by the older generation)l they crawl along!!

I actually like behind behind them as long as i am no more than 2 cars back, so i can overtake...
