Title: Topic Titles - Please make them relevant!
Post by: hotel21 on 10 February 2009, 18:50:05
As the title.

And forum guidelines.

Please make the title relevant to the content within the subsequent post so that it explains whats following.

Use of NWS for Not Work Safe where content would cause problems/upset as images are of an adult nature or similar, are to be encouraged.  But please do not take this as Carte Blanche to turn OOF into a cheap version of a XXX website.  It is a car enthusiasts forum which was instigated to encourage the share of information on the Vauxhall/Opel Omega and its varients, general chat about car related and similar matters, not a smut swap shop....

Technical help threads benefit GREATLY from a relevant title.  Some folks are happy to comment on specific areas but are less keen to wade through lots of posts where perhaps they cannot give anything back.

thanks....   :y

And whilst at it, please remember that 'text speak' is notoriously difficult to read, both for humans and for computers, thus we ask you don't use it. Thanks.

The relevance bit applies in the sale/wanted section too...

A header of 'wanted' on its own says exactly break all....  Car?  Wheel?  Left handed backlash eliminator for a 1995 Omega 5.7 V8 semi automatic????

Help others to help you....    :y

(Jees, this isn't doing my blood pressure much use......   >:(  )

I agree on all of the above, maybe this should be made into a temprorary sticky to remind some people, as no doubt the influx of spam will nock this down the pages.

There is already a sticky "Forum Guidelines" at the top of every board. Either people can't see it for some reason, or chose to ignore it...

Topic titles understood & point taken but does General chat have to be car related? I know it gets used as a chat room but that's no bad thing, reckon that's why the whole thing's such a success coz we can air our opinions on everything. I'm sure we all appreciate the time (& headaches) that admins input to running the show but wouldn't like to see things getting too regimented.

All work & no play etc...... :-/

Absolutely no probs whatsoever with general chat being about, well, general chat!

It can however, get tedious to re-read the likes ancient jokes that have been emailed to the sun and back a zillion times as well as having to wade through LOTS of pictures of scantily clad maidens (not really a chore, per se, just time consuming!!) to ensure that we have not crossed the line as to content.

That said, some are close to the knuckle and, given we cater for both sexes (and variations....) content is unbalanced.  Apparently...

Toys back in AmivoV6 ;D

Nobody said all posts have to be able cars  :-/. Just remember than Omegas/cars are what our common interest is.  We're even interested in your 52k Cortina ;D.

This thread is more of a reminder about the forum guidelines, as posted at the top of every board, but apparently nobody reads, or choose to ignore.

I'm not really bothered whats posted (as long as its legal - I have an obligation to check that).

I do think occasionally we are getting bogged down with tired old jokes, NWS 'same old' type pictures etc.  I wouldn't want these to disappear, but personally feel these are sometimes overpowering and detracting from the section, if that makes sense?  I should stress that is my own personal view, not necessarily that of the Admin team.

i dont want to see pictures of half dressed blokes
but at the end of the day there are plenty of females on the site that might want to see pictures of half dressed blokes and not half dressed females

i'm not taking sides with either the men or women on the site but fair is fair everyone has there own opinion

 :-?

Fair go B. I guess we could go look at such things elsewhere should we wish & without being condecesnding we should consider our lady members. I don't particularly want to see pics of half dressed blokes.
I'll miss the girlie pics if they stop though!!!!! :P
And there's plenty of it about ::)

What I will add though.  Txt speak, I dont like it.  But a question was asked in a thread the other day regards stuff that none of the newer members never understans.

SWMBO is the main examaple.  FFS, FS WTD are just 3 more.  To a degree this is a contradiction of a point being made.  PMSL, LMAO, LOL are just 3 more, but yet all Admins and members use them.  AFAIK, IMHO etc etc

Could we at least have an agreed list as a sticky.  :y :y

Also Avatar sizes, there are still loads oversize.  :y

Yup, fair comments....   :y

TB made reference to the difference between text speak and common computer abbreviations a day or two ago...  Computer abbreviations predate text speak by a long chalk.

'Text speak' became, in effect, steeeeet speeeeek before the availability of predictive texting on mobiles and is perhaps attemting to evolve as a language in its own form.  personally, i find it massively difficult to read - different generation? - and avoid its use like the plague.

Further, in computer terms - which, after all, is what OOF is based upon - it is a massive hinderance to search tools when trying to find data that has been already posted here....

Common English is exactly that....  Common textspeak evolves and changes almost daily.....        :-/

Thread seems to be meandering all over the place now, anyone remember what its supposed to be about ? ;D ;D

In all seriousness tho, I enjoy being on here for 2 reasons 1) the technical info and help and 2)the banter. Agree that , if your looking for a particular subject, it is sometimes difficult to find/refind what you want , even with the search facility, because of spam etc. As I think I mentioned before, re-unclear titles, the Toyota estima site has the facility, that when you click on a title it gives you the first couple of lines of the originating text so saves you having to open a thread unnecassarily. How much work would that involve to do here perhaps? Obviously dont want to create unnecessary work for admin for sake of posters being more detailed in their titling, but worth looking at? As for the "chatroom" side of it, whilst I'm sure none of us like wading thru loads of spam etc, surely this is a major side of the forum where we can all get to know each other better, have a bit of a banter and talk about issues/news etc that interest us. Doesnt take long going thru the threads before you come across messages of support and help/advice on non-mig topics either, which is surely another important part of the forum,

Having a thread preview function has already been discussed, if I recall.  Think there was a software conflict as well as potential problems for those who post/read via mobiles and PDA's rather than full size laptops or PC's....

Not getting involved matey, this is a text thread, dont see any pics in here and it doesnt have NWS in the tittle. ::) :-X

thanks....  Appreciated....   ;)

there is a sticky for common acronyms on the site somewhere, obviously an inapproriate location though

Re the preview - easy enough to do, but do to the architecture of the software we are using, would kill the server.  Additionally, the extra banwidth to do that would have an impact on the network around the server, and be an issue for those on limited bandwidth.

As to Genchat - we're certainly not trying to kill it off, quite the opposite, just trying to make it a bit more balanced.  I get a fair few PMs from people about how they are finding genchat cumbersome having to wade through pages and pages of, for eg, tired old jokes, links to bbc site everytime a new headline is announced, constant PC help request etc.  Whilst all these have a place in genchat, from the feedback I get, we need to look at a few things.

genchat has always been a key part of the site - its the thing that makes us a 'community' rather than a group of strangers.  Long may that continue :y

Please do post your views on this thread, or if you would rather not do so in the open, PM me or any of the other admins :y

Lastly, what a great place oof is - the traffic the server deals with proves that I'm not alone in thinking that.  genchat is a vital part of the jigsaw that we need to keep from going off the rails (as was what happened at the previous site ;).

Thanks
