was common in my young years, with men usually driving family cars of a certain 'type' such as Morris Minors, Austin 1800s, Morris Oxfords, Austin Cambridge's and Westminister's, along with of course the occasional Humber, Bentley or Rolls. Sometimes they were even spotted in a 'fab' mini, but usually a 'Countryman'!! This was the 1950s & 60s carpet slipper, man about home, generation. 8-) 8-) 8-)
Well, today, in 2009, I spotted a man driving a van....................smoking a pipe!! :o :o :o :o
It took me right back, and rather surprised me enough to write this thread! :o :o
Who else sees drivers smoking pipes in 2009? :-? :-?
I am sure certain Traffic patrols could well question the safety aspect of smoking a pipe (with often one hand on the wheel) as they have when motorists have been drinking water or eating aspples! ::) ::) ::)

Ive smoked a pipe before while driving...then started floating and finaly passed out.
Still them crack pipes are evil things.. ;D
Cany say ive seen anyone smoking a pipe for a long time...probably since teenage years.
-
Quite difficult to light a pipe in a TR4 @ over 100mph with the hood down - used to do it though back in the 60s!
-
I have a friend whom smokes a pipe; his Continental pipe-tobacco is gorgeous, he has varieties that are steeped in Brandy, Apples or Cherries: the scent is simply heavenly. :)
-
I smoke a pipe from time to time, mostly on exercise (t'is an officer-like thing to do, what!) and when sailing (garrrrrrrrrrr) I love it!

Lizzie....................my old Dad .....................who is now 89.........was a pipe smoker for years and years.
He was an old Grammar school boy .....who in the 1940s......... !1950's....1960's used to smoke his pipe in all manner of cars of the time.........In order as best I can recall..........was..Wolseley Hornet Daytona Special......Morris Eight...............Hillman Minx . ......Sunbeam Talbot.....Ford Zephyr ............Ford Zodiac.................Later on as I was growing up he turned his attention to continental cars.....I remember him having 3 Citroen DS.....Alfa 1750 GTV ....BWW 2002tii...........amongst others.
In the old days he was the sort of Englishman who would own a steamer trunk......and yes .....he did have patches on his elbows. :y :y :y

Anybody notice how gay the St Bruno advert of the early seventies looks......and for that matter the "Brut" advert .............with Henry Cooper and Kevin Keegan ........flicking towels at each other in the shower.........looked like a couple of shirt lifters. :y :y :y :y :y

There is a bloke who stands on the corner of the field opposite our house on weekday luchtimes smoking a pipe. I think he is from one of the nearby units and on his lunchbreak. I have never seen anything else chuck out so much smoke, it is quite funny to watch. ;D

Yes, when I started in the retail trade we sold all kind of wonderfully smelly tobacco's, with names like 'Babies Bottom', and Whiskey Flake & Shag, and many, many more.........spending time in the tobacco store room with all those fragrances was just great............oh what memories!
The cigarette called 'Passing Cloud' was my favourite though, in a gorgeous pink pack with clouds on it if I remember correctly! We sold that very expensive cigarette mainly in our Draycott Avenue, Chelsea Branch to all the 'fab' and 'beautiful people' of those days!! :-* :-* :-* :D :D ;)
