Spent a fair bit of time in the garage this week ::)
Has been úbber productive 8-)
Had a new set of self levelling shocks and HEAVY duty springs sent over from Autovaux. Odered them before Chrimbo, they were late but as it was the right parts I'll let them off.
NOTE , Autovaux have now moved premisis
Went for self lalvelling shocks as they were already fitted and would like to get them working properly.
Fitted them on Wednesday, ride was phenominally better :y
Bit of a bugger to fit as the gas tank practically covered the top fixings

On Thursday fitted the springs, (that was a bit harder), slackened of the trailing arm,took off the lower shock fixing and they went in with a few turns on the spring compressors and a bit of leverage.
Was easier as the new springs were shorter

Difference in spring height was 40mm, ride height is now 15mm lower with a full LPG tank than with the old spriings.
went for heavy duty as the LPG tank is over the axle rather than the fuel tank which is forward of the shocks.

This is a job to be conducted on my MV6 in the spring.
Decided as I am going to have it off SWMBO I want it to handle properly again! :)

Haynes book of lies it described charging the adjustable with compressed air (no pressures) before fitting. Is this something you did, is it required?

Self leveling pump, will sort it all out once fitted and the ignition is turned on.
I was actualy half way through fitting a manual leveling option for the auto leveling capable cars on my estate just before it was binned........that would allow you to lower or raise the rear on demand.....
A Friday general knowlege question for some.......why is the new spring SHORTER than the old one....the answer makes sense but, takes some thinking about.....

Will that be because the old spring has (to a degree) lost its "memory"?
The spring will have been a similar size originally but the stresses of time have taken away its ability to keep its origninal shape.

Stress and loss of memory sounds familiar. ;)

As the spring metal ages it weakens, this results in longer travel and a natural inability to retain its original shorter size/shape....hence old springs get taller..!

Material reaching it's elastic limit, and work hardening changing the molecular matrix structure...
at a guess.... ;)

Isn’t is normal behaviour for shocks (not yet fitted) to return to there full extent after compression because only one of mine does, the other remains compressed.?
Edit - I assume the addition of the air pump will top it up and sort it out.

old style oil shocks would remain compressed.
gas shocks usually extend fully when given their freedom. sounds like you might have a duff one. Is the damping resistance the same on both?

Sound like oil and seem to have similar resistance. Looks like I’ll be fitting them after all, thanks.
