Title: OOF Showplates
Post by: jjleonard on 23 January 2009, 19:53:11
First off, this has come from a discussion in the Reg No in pics (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1232576845) thread, and I want to personally thank Richardirv for his sterling work in producing some examples.

Between Richard and I, we're happy to produce these for use by OOFers at shows, to avoid the issue of a picture being published that will have your reg number shown to all and sundry.

Obviously, this is is dependant on how many Richard is prepared to print without a contribution to his costs - I am happy to pick up a cheapo laminator and produce a couple of hundred of them, as I clearly have nothing better to do with my time in the evenings.

EDIT: This is also subject to TBs approval regarding using the OOF logo on these plates for public use.

Examples are below:

The white plate:

The yellow plate:

The black plate:

I suggest you vote for either the white or yellow plates if you would only want either one, or the yellow and white pair if you think that you'd prefer front and back plates.

I'd produce enough black plates to use in pairs.

I guess I'm opening a can of worms here - but I reckon it would be relatively easy to get these sorted for the first major meet, be that the Lakes or York, and have some for Newent too.

So, whaddya think? When I can get some printed and laminated, I'll take pictures of my car with them on, so you can get an idea of what they look like in real life.

Great stuff .. a big THANK YOU to you both .. and I'm quite happy to pay to cover costs and postage... there is no way either of you should be "out of pocket" for doing this.

For me, this is a little way to give back to the forum for all the help everybody has given me. (The effort put into the guides, and the advice when I needed it most) -  and given that I could laminate about 200 of these for about 50 quid, it's a price I'm happy to pay.

I don't speak for Richardirv on this, and I for one would be happy to pay his costs in printing them.

Not shunning the concept, or anyones work.

But I really don't care about my plates being seen.

As a side note, I have seen 1 or 2 members make up nice fakeies with their forum name on.

Fair point - hence the option for not wanting them. I really wanted to gauge interest before doing a load of them!  :y

this is a good idea and I applaud the work and effort, but maybe stick to white and yellow, this way they will replace usual plates at meets etc....will look good in piccies  :y :y :y

Some good work put into this, thank you for your efforts. :y
I don't have a problem with my Reg being seen either, after all it is on all my posts. ::) However I do like the idea of the show plates, and agree I think a few migs with them on will make great photo's... :y :y :y

Edit. I like the black plates best, but would be happy with any choice. :y

Thats probably what I personally will do, purely so at meets, it helps 'meet virgins' know whos who.

Just need to find a a3 laminator, pretty certain mine only does a4

I'll be speaking to Richardirv over the next week and picking up a laminator and the A3 pouches next week too - as a result we should have some in the next week or two. I'll set up arrangements for shipping them out shortly.  :y

I'll PM Richardirv and ask him. The design work is all his own - i'm just the laminating monkey.

He also mentioned being able to print them for free - but I don't know how many plates (or variants) he had in mind. I'll talk to the local printers next week if he can't do it.  :y

yeah, think so! don't know how easy it would be for him to do a load of variants, but provided he can set up the images, then it may not be too much hassle.

I've dropped him a PM to ask.

Plain black, without OOF on the right, or the white border...

Think Silver on black tho tbh...

right, I don't mind making up individual plates with user names although this will take time I think its worth the effort. I do think we should probably stick to one design like the white and yellow just so its easier. As for printing I need to know exactly how many people want these for names and I suggest we do a batch of unnamed ones too.

Nice one, Richard.

I suppose the next step is to compile a list of those who want named plates? A la the Newent attendees list, please add your name to the list below:

Please note: type it in the EXACT FORMAT you want it on the plate.

Let me know your costs and I'll paypal or cheque .. your choice :)

Title: Re: OOF Showplates

yeah, As I think the silhouete taking up the majority of the plate looks best, that way The plates can be used for any show event and be able to advertise the forum without them knowing my user id.

member names could go along the bottom in small print like some ppl do on proper plates. just means in photos they cant be read, which is ideal for me

I have a set of Showplates that I had done for my first meet that cost me £20 :o

I also laminated nametags for the people to match the nameplates put in the dash of the car.  This helped no end in working out who's who and for what it's worth I think this is the best way to go.  Nobody stays anonymous for long at a meet anyway.......

I'll like a set of CHOPSDAD if you print some more. :y

That's my fault! I've been busy at work.

Rich and I are sorting out a price for the plates - we'll let everybody know the procedure as soon as we're sorted.

Cheers
John.

Ok I am looking after all of this now as jjleonard is pretty busy at the moment. So I really wanna give you guys some idea of price.

We originally thought we would be able to charge £5 pair. But there is a chance it could be a few quid more more for various reasons.

I would like to get some feedback to find out if everyone who ordered is happy with that.

Cheers

Rich

p.s. There are also a few Generic Nameless plates available if anyone wants a pair. Same as the names ones but the OOF logo is slighlty larger.

I thought that would be a personal choice, so no. I havn't even decided what to use myself. But for my test pics I just used some looped sellotape which seemed to work fine tbh. I just thought everyone would have different idea's of how to attach them so didn't see the point in providing a method of attachment.

Hope this is ok with everyone.  :y

I guess people wanting to use regularly could use thin velcro strips (not sure if that is legal though if left in place?), or just a bit of blutak for occasional use?

I had thought about this but It requires strips to be left on the plate and I suspect that PC Plod wouldn't be to happy. Bet you'd get pulled all the time.

cunningly placed over the lettering  :-X, or unless you can get yellow velcro (I know you can get white), if its same colour, and just thin strips either end....    ....then again, they may think you use fake plates ;D

Was exactly my thought, If you could find some strong velcro the right colour that can be put on very small in all 4 corners or on the lettering as you say but there is still a risk.

I will have a think about it, see if I can think of any (legal) alternatives

Was thinking of getting some 8/10 mm plastic tubing.  Run a stanley knife (Carefully) down one side to split it. then either put a piece either end of the number plate or a long piece either top or bottom of the plate and use it like a long C clamp method to hold the show plate on.

Just realised they will be slightly bigger, They are printed on paper exactly the same size as a plate but after laminating they will be a bit larger. Doubt it would be enough for this not to work though.  :y

Just hit a bit of a snag, I just placed an order for a A4 laminator and some A2 pouches! Only to recieve a phonecall from the company to query why I purchased an A4 laminator and A2 pouches, After I explained what I was going with them he advised me it would not work and that if I cut the pouches down from A2 that they won't seal properly, he said they might seal temporarorly but once cooled and after a day or so the seal would fail. He said to do what I ask properly I would need a roll laminator, bla bla bla!!

So I canceled the order and am now back to the drawing board.  :'(

All idea's are welcome!!

That's assuming that it's a heat seal laminator.

Sister in Law used to laminate business cards on an A4seet, leaving about 10-15mm between each one on all sides and never had a problem :y :y

TBH, it's not like they're going to be going up and down the road like it... Just sat stationary in (hopefully) brilliant sunshine ::) ::)

Well these are the e-mails I have received saying it won't work!

Yes unfortunately the seal would still fail - your only option would be a roll laminator, many thanks

Regards

&

This is not something as a Company we advise for Pouch Laminating as far as we are concerned this will not work on a Pouch Laminator - you may do so at your own risk.

I need to do something, all I can do is try chaps and hope they are wrong!!

EDIT - Well Bits are ordered (again) wish me luck!! hope I havn't wasted my money!!  :'(

Anything that is produced that has one of the 2 current oof logos, or uses the terms oof/omegowners etc just needs to be approved by admins. I'll bore you with details/reasons with you really are that interested.

Bottom line, though, we are obviously keen for people to promote the site, but we just need a couple of safeguards in place (eg, people printing off flyers themself on inkjet printers, and sticking on a car, only for it to rain, and ink to run onto paintwork)...

Excellent... I'd suggest using a generic plate (or better still some scrap from around the plates) as a test with the laminate for water tightness etc... I reckon they'll be fine :y :y :y

You'll have to give us a price soon, 2ndclass postage is fine :y :y :y

I accept i could be missing a valid point & toys are in the pram tonight  :D just seems we can't do anything lately.  ::)

Is linking to here off my web site and my Ebay ad with the logo OK?

Not a problem, although we are not using the black ones just the white & yellow as a pair.

Price isn't confirmed but won't be more that £8 for the pair.

Ok I have tweeked the black on a touch, taken the bevel off it as not to change the logo from the original design and made the white a tint of black so it kind of looks like silver, like the old style plates.

See what you think

They are all laminated now apart from the black ones. Might try that on the black ones, They are not as bad once cut down but not perfect.

I'm lead to believe that the reason the laminated stuff "curls" is a slight difference in temperature between the top and bottom sheets, one contacts the hot roller, the other doesn't, so they end up slightly different.

Apparently, one way of sorting this is to send the item back through the other way up ... this means that both sides have had a "hot + cooler" run and they end up flat.

This came from a guy who does commercial printing and a fair bit of laminating for a living, I have no knowledge or proof that it works .... if you have a "spare" laminating pouch it might be worth a try ???

My laminator has a switch for 150micron and 250micron. The laminates used are 250. would it be safe to put the ones already laminated back though or would it cause meltdown? I may test one on the 150 setting but twice through but there isn't much I can do about the ones already done!!

Can't answer and he's left work .. :(  been playing with my cheapy laminator ... putting through twice on "high" does not cause melting.. as I left it until almost cold by the time it goes back in .. so it never gets that hot. On an A4 sheet it does seem to make a difference to the curl .. but its hard to tell as A4 doesn't curl that much anyway .. :(
