For today at least.
ITS SNOOOOOWING ;D not heavy and not expected to last ( about 1inch) although i gather storms are forcast and any of our Northern Members may have significant amounts of Snow :-/
And as we all know RWD V6 Omegas and Snow dont mix.
Worse still i am in a quite remote area and up the top of a hill
3 cheers For Suzuki Swifts :D

I'm on the other side of the country from you Mark and its skelping down with snow here.
Wife left for work in her 206 about 0800 and her clean bit on the drive covered within a few minutes.
The sky box is locked up as theres loads of snow on the dish and receiver.
My car has a good 2 inches on it and thats in less than 2 hours. Fully intending to go out for a play in a big factory carpark later today!!
B
ps - I like the snow - it makes my work in progress rear garden look as good as everyone elses!
-
Booo! No smow here! >:(
Heck, there is no chance of it either!
In Derby it is bright, with patchy sunshine and a temperature of around 10 degrees c.
Oh, and it's a bit breezy.
Derby, centre of the uninteresting weather world!

Far too warm for snow here :(

Looks like the polish is doing its work!!

Well, it was lying when we got up this morning, then it thawed and now it's chucking it down with huuuuuuge flakes.
Kind'a nice 'cos we don't get much snow where we are as we live about 3cm above sea level!!!
-
its just wet and windy here >:(

Just floods and gales here!
-
Time for you Jocks to get your AcmeOmegaSnowmobiles out!! ;) ;D
Never had the opportunity to try my Omega out in the snow 'cos we rarely get any! :-? When we do, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, grinds to a halt. At the moment down here in the south east it's just peeing down (as usual) and bloody windy. :(
-
Last 'proper' snow we had here (not that it was more than 3 or 4 inches) was that about 3yrs ago, and the south came to a standstill. The MV6 coped well - put box in snow mode, light on the gas, and only occasionally did TC light up...
-
Its the large, wet snowflakes at the moment which makes the smallest twigs about an inch or more in diameter! I can just see the tip of the ariel on the rear of the roof above the snow.
Been busy round the house this morning, in between catching up on mails etc but certainly going out for big boys playtime in the MV6 in a wee while!
Yippee!!!!! ;D ;D

wonder what my senny would make of the snow ::)
I wheel spun it off the line in the dry, and i was not even trying!

Ouch, we are going down that route soon blocking all external internet access.
Was meant to be implemented in December so just a matter of time :(
-
and the south came to a standstill.
Why is that these days?!?!?!
I remember when I started driving people rarely got stuck. I remember driving in feet of snow in my Cortina and it wasn't a problem! Nowadays if there's even so much as a snowflake on the ground the world stops turning!!

People, esp newer drivers, simply do not know how to drive in snow. And some who should know believe the car electronics should stop them having shunts in the bad weather (I'm referring to the BMW 3 series junior reps type)

Many large companies buy their filters in from companies that specialise in categorising sites. Omega Owners usually falls in to categories such as Forums and Chatrooms and this category is usually blocked by larger companies...

The secret to snow driving in an Omega is a nice tank of traction control fluid in the back..
I keep smiling at Tunnies Senator comments, clearly hes never had his 4 pot wheel spinning....I find the 2.5 Manual lets go quite easily (with lower traction control fluid levels)....
Perhaps he should pop up and go for a drive round the country lanes......
-
Ow yes, its pissing it down in Nottingham plus 60+Mph winds.....and rising!

I also remember, in my younger days when winters were far worse than they are now, we were geared up for bad weather much more than we are now. My father always had a set of snow chains, shovel, blankets etc. either in his boot or in the garage in readiness. I seem to remember that most motorists had a set of snow chains at least. Now when we get a few flakes of snow in this part of the country, no one is prepared at all and chaos rules.

I may have also had it a bit tail happy, but that was its 'durable' tyres rather than raw power....

It's not difficult to spin the wheels on a 2.2, and anyway, shouldn't you be working on the Rover? :-?
-
Fairly bright down here with ferocious winds. Already lost 2 tiles off the roof today >:(
In The snow in Cornwall last year, got the auto box so hot and bothered that the snow mode stopped working until it all cooled down :o. Bet you didn't know that could happen.

My usual 20min (max) drive home from work took 45mins :(
Two diversions 'cos of trees down & that's across town........

Meant to be getting snow here so we will probably get sun

Try and keep out of my way tonight,i drive a 16ft double decker Hgv between Sittingbourne Kent & Lichfield, not 2 good in strong winds!

Phone office to be told the wind is dying down and customers are paying for a overnight service! Plus no work no PAY.
BoBO, found a drunk Polish driver asleep on his bed, no lights on in the fast lane M6 at jct 3 Wednesday morning. [smiley=shocked.gif]

Spinning them was on gravel though, never spun the wheels on normal roads.
I managed to spin the rears on the Senator pulling out of a junction, the road i was on was slighly down hill joining a flat road, and i did boot it quite a bit... heard a bit of tire squeal :D

Also, that tail wagging it did on day I wheelspun in at the gateway, that did catch me unawares - wasn't expecting that! It just has been the sheer grunt of a 2.2 ;)

Its easily to under estimate the power of the 2.2 ;)
Actually after 2 days of driving the Senator I was expecting a big disapointment in the Omega, its was not as bad as i thought. Engine is a lot nosier when cold, but performance was ok. But its mid range and higher speeds where mine runs out of steam, the Senator just pulls, and pulls.
I like my saving my tyres, saves money. Following my Dad - 92k miles only on his second set of tyres! :o

Don't skimp on tyres on the Senny!

The rears are brand new and don't get much traction :(
Might stick them on the front and get some decent rubber on the back

Would like to see you try to spin the rears of my 2.2.....auto and on lpg ;D I have only managed it when on wet leavy slippy roads!
No snow here either just trees down and tiles off :(
It was madness earlier.....police closed a major road coz of tiles coming of office block and were diverting all traffic including lorries and double decker buses down a side road.....that is really single track coz of cars parked both sides of the road!....it was chaos!

Always best tyres on rear...
Though with 200+bhp, it will be possible to light up most tyres...

PROVIDED
A) it's all working correctly.... and you have the LSD.
B) you have SOME idea of how to drive in adverse conditions...
The Sennie B is about the only non 4WD car i'd want to drive in Snow...
They've got me across the A5 passes through Snowdonia in thick heavy snow and fog... Going from Anglesey to Oxford, before the A55 was properly completed...
and home to Old Colwyn, From High Wycombe, when Colwyn Bay had 6 inches of Snow settled on the BEACH.... (you can probably extrapolate how bad the roads were....) if snow settles on a beach... with that much salt around... then the rest of the world is in for a nasty time... oh and it's for real.... it made the centre pages of the national papers...
suffice to say that that night, there was only 1 clear lane on the M6, and the A55 was kind of like driving in the 1000 Lakes rally.
(Fully laden with kids Wife and luggage...... decent traction! )
the hardest bit of the journey was the last 1/2 mile...... there was no route to gain access to our house without going up or down a steep hill, with 90 degree corners and junctions.... and believe you me.... Clwyd County council had barely heard of salt and grit.... and then only on the major A roads.... the roads around our place weren't cleared for about a week....
so it was a question of finding the route with the least hill, and praying i remembered how to balance the car on a combination of handbrake and throttle, and opposite lock in abundance....
the last bit was exciting.... our house was at the bottom of a fairly steeply sloping cul de sac....
there was some question as to whether or not I'd manage to stop the sennie before it went through the garden fences and into the neighbours house...
:D
Mission Accomplished./... although the mrs was almost as white as the snow ;)
-
BTW.... at night, prior to the arrival of so many varieties of Speed cameras.... the A5 used to be a damn fast road ... provided you had a motor that liked overtaking rapidly... and balls of steel !
:D
I could do Benllech on Anglesey to High Wycombe , In about 2hours&30-40min on a Dry night, 2hours 50 on a wet night
easily..... :D
Daytime that route was always more like 3&1/2 hours.... on my own, 4 hours with the kids on board.
-
Can you please move the snow to Austria - I'm skiiing in 2 weeks and there hasn't been any fresh for weeks - a huge 3cm expected in the next 3 days though - woo hoo >:(

Always best tyres on rear...
Time for me to get educated! Why's that?
-
its Sunny here today 8-) no snow or rain or wind :o

Always best tyres on rear...
Time for me to get educated! Why's that?
Even on FWD.
Its apparently something to do with how we can all deal better instinctively with losing front end over the rear. Additionally, losing front end, if you lose it and don't catch it, you can still catch it later. Once you lose rear and don't catch it, you're in trouble...

Makes sense, I've always assumed that because you steer & most of the braking is done at the front it's better to have your best tyres there....

A common theory, but apparently incorrect.
-
I agree with the best tyres on the rear, irrespective of front, rear or 4 wheel drive.
Was told this years ago and was very dubious until I visited the Uniroyal factory that used to be near Edinburgh. Saw (and took part in) demo drives which proved it to me.
Not so sure of the instinctive dealing with the front side of things, though. May have been the case a long time ago when auld farts like me learned on rear wheel drive cars. Thats when front wheel drive was reserved for Mini's and a couple of obscure 'foreign' (ie French) cars!
-
Well you learn something every day, have to get mine swapped over then ::)

I am starting to feel left out. ;D

Its the anti cold properties of all the whisky fumes in the air round Morayshire!

Loosing the front is normaly under steer which is pretty slow and predicatable (if you can do anything about it!)
Loosing the rear is generaly over steer which tends to happen much faster (the Senator is very tail happy.....and pretty quick to let go, the Omega is a lot more progressive due to the better weight balance) and requires more skill.
And remember....good tyres on both the front and the rear....
-
I can definately see the point of best tyres on the back of V6 Omegas
However for 4 pots.....its pretty hard to make the back go.....unless your trying to do it. Or its wet conditions.....and then your not driving according to the weather conditions.
On my 4 pot id rather have the best tyres on the front for stopping power in case of emergency braking.
Id rather get grip than slide with abs cutting in.
On FWD such as Vectras......i carnt see how you could get the back end to loose it.....unless driving too fast when cornerning.
Perhaps someone would like to explain why my thinking is incorrect.
I can see the reason if your pushing the FWD or RWD car to the limit.....
Oh and as Mark says......its best to have good tyres on both.
And if anyones interested the Nankangs on the back of mine have now done 33k.....got an MOT warning about them 5k ago.....getting em changed next week ;)
-
Once you lose rear and don't catch it, you're in trouble...
Or in a ditch or round a tree!!
Seriously though, I can't say I've ever noticed my Meega understeering at all!! Always very progressive oversteer*. (Even with huuuuge tyres on the back and no LSD.).
*(Damn I wish I had the skill to drive it to it's limit!!!)

Very easy to lose the back end on a FWD car if you've got good tyres up front and crap ones on the rear. All your "feel" comes through the front tyres, both the steering and throttle will communicate the levels of grip, so you drive within that limit. The problem comes when you need to back off for whatever reason, bend tightens up or someone pulls in front of you. As soon as the throttle is lifted, weight transfers to the front so the front tyres bite a little more, the rear tyres bite a little less, then snap the crap rear tyres have given up and you're going sideways! This is even more likely to happen if you swerve and lift off at the same time, as so many people do when the car starts to understeer.
It's a very well known phenomenon, and can actually be used to deliberately get the back end out on FWD cars as they obviously can't do power oversteer. Look up "lift-off oversteer".
It's unexpectedly happened to me a few times while driving FWD cars (good few years ago now), and it's not pleasant! I managed to catch it both times but I think at least a little of that is down to good fortune as much as fast reactions. First time was the classic worn front tyres swapped onto the rear, so the fronts had loads of tread while the rears had only 3 mm or so. Had to swerve to avoid a retard who didn't give way coming onto a fast roundabout between 2 70MPH dual carriageways, and of course I lifted off a little too.. snap! The guy's face was a picture when I got the car facing the right way again and proceeded to pull alongside him and give him some well deserved abuse. 2nd time was someone else's car (Peugeot 306) with just utter crap tyres all round, was giving it some gas going up a hill and round a bend and the front just started going straight on... no room to take any lock off so I just kept the wheel pointing the same way and lifted off the gas... snap, round it comes. Cought that one but overcorrected and it came back the other way! Man that was scary, the tyres on that thing really caught me out but thankfully I got it pointing the right way without hitting anything in the process :D
Hope that was some entertaining reading ;)

Is that not what Porsche 911's are infamous for? And they're RWD.

That will not include Derby. :(
We, at best, get a dusting nowadays.
I hope Nottingham get some decent snow though as Mark DTM's son will not have seen it before and he is old enough to enjoy it now! :)
