Title: Need a torque wrench
Post by: bestseany on 19 January 2007, 15:18:50
Right, I'm tackling the rocker cover gaskets on Monday, so I've got to get a torque wrench so I don't warp the plastic rocker covers.

I was going to get a Halfords Professional range one, to match my toolkit, but it's £50!

Would this cheap one from Machine Mart do the job well enough?

Afraid not mate. :(

You need one that goes down to 8nm. These are normally 3/8" drive and noticeably smaller.

I am sure Machine Mart will sell one.

Low range ones are expensive, this one is a reasonable compramise...

What range do I need?

I need to get it from a shop rather than the internet really, as I'm doing it on Monday.

Yep, I've got a Halfords TC. Didn't think the discount would be much though, as it only knocked a fiver off my toolkit.

When I was looking the short handle 3/8" from Halfords for £50 was the only one I found that did 8Nm.  I was able to borrow one, but otherwise that was my only choice.

It should be 20% discount on all tools.....unless tools/toolkit are on offer.

I paid £40 for that torque wrench in Halfords  :y

This one starts at 10nm - you need 8nm & having already searched Machine Mart catalogue they don't do one that low  :(

This one will do it but look at the price http://www.abbeypowertools.co.uk/draper-sockets/draper-torque-wrenches/showitem-8049-58130.aspx

Yep, I got the 150pc toolkit that was reduced from £150 to £100. That explains the lack of a decent discount then.

I'm borrowing my girlfriends dad torque wrench now so should save me having to buy one  :y

I have the both Machine Mart one 28-210NM and the Draper one 10-80NM.

However, for the Rocker Cover you will also need a 8-20NM or 5-22NM one like this: http://www.abbeypowertools.co.uk/draper-sockets/draper-torque-wrenches/showitem-8049-58130.aspx

Machine Mart do a 3/8" drive torque wrench, a smaller version of the one linked to earlier.

Model CHT204, I couldn't find it in the online catalogue but they do stock it as its there own make.

Range 120 - 920 inch pounds
1.4 - 11.1 Metre Kgs

haven't done the conversions to something I know yet.

I've just been to get the missus' dads torque wrench.

It looks like it'll do the job though. It's a 1/2" drive and has two gauges on it, one for old english and the other for metric (nM).

However, the nM starts at 10, but the english measurement goes a bit lower. If I roughly lower so it's off the gauge but where 8nM should be (it's still in range on the older measurements so should still work), will that be ok do you reckon?

The 'old English' is probably lbf - you can work-out how much it is in NM using http://www.onlineconversion.com/torque.htm so that you know for sure if the lowest setting in 'old English' is indeed 8NM.

1/2" torque wrench to do 8Nm/? You've as much chance of getting the correct torque figure with that as you would knitting fog! If that's all you can get hold of you'd be better off not using it and just use common sense with your small 3/8" or 1/4" ratchet/T-bar. Not everything in life has to be done up with a torque wrench.

I'm not sure what you mean mate. Why wouldn't the 1/2" drive torque wrench work properly if it says on the gauge it's set to 8nm?  :-/

I'd be surprised is a 1/2" drive would go down that far  :-/

Well this torque wrench is a proper old expensive thing that my missus' old man robbed from work many years ago  ;D

The gauge says it doing 8Nm, so it must be, mustn't it?
