Yes I know ::) it's another petition, but if you or someone you know, knows what it's like to be disabled, perhaps you will understand.
Please give your support at: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Disabled-Rights/
-
With the risk of sounding insensitive, this is going to cost businesses, governments and everyone in general billions. On the fence with this one, as there really arent enough severely disabled people out there to need it.
-
My real irritation is the selfish, thoughtless, lazy, IQ dleiquent morons who park in disabled spaces but are not blue badge holders!! >:(
Generally it is businessmen in expensive cars/Chelsea tractors.
SWMBO mum is disabled (MS) and when I am over in NI, I often take her out shopping.
It REALLY p*sses me off to find disabled parking spaces have been taken by a*rseholes who can't be bothered to park a bit further away from the shops!
The spaces are closer to the shops and wides than other spaces for a reason.
I have to take out a wheelchair, and then get her into it. Not easy in normal spaces!
I wish shopping centres would actually clamp people who blatantly abuse these spaces as I see it being the only way to stop these thoughtless t*ssers!
I have had a few run ins with people I have seen just sitting in a space, just waiting form someone, especially when they have taken the last space.
Suffice to say I am not a small person, and can be quite intimidating if they don't agree to my initial polite request... ;)
I point out to them when they argue, please go call the security/Police and explain what exactly you are doing parking in this area.... ;)
OK, rant over... just something I am passionate about, disabled rights.

I've parked in a disabled spot a couple of times :o
Albeit only for a few minutes while I pop to a cash point or something. I always thought stuff like parking in a disabled space was already illegal? The government have also already bought in regulations that force offices, shops and even websites to be more accessible to all. I know this because friends businesses have been hit with it, and our company website has just had to be re-done to make it accessible to people with eyesight difficulties, and interactivity disabilities.
I dont get what this petition is about?

I dont get what this petition is about?
It says to make misuse illegal.
It's something that really gets me too, why active people can't walk a few yards is beyond me.
I'm afraid lack of respect & are ignorance are a growing trend.

I thought it already was illegal.
-
It reflects the ignorance and selfish nature of some of todays people....
When the father in law was ill and had a disabled badge I couldn't park in Sainsburys carpark because some tosser in an X5 had parked in one. I parked across the back of him whilst he went wth the mother in law into the shop and I stood and watched....the owner was realy annoyed but, learnt a valuable lesson....he waited 45 minutes to get out.....

I think that unless you're a permit holder, parking is illegal in disabled bays on a public road or public areas. However, I don't think this is the case in supermarkets, superstores and such like, they are purely advisory. There is still no excuse for normal people to use them, and it infuriates me when I see perfectly able bodied men and women doing so. As LB66 said above, these are nearly always people in expensive cars who probably think they are better than everyone else and can do what they want because they've got a few quid!! >:( I think supermarkets should be able to employ wardens with powers to clamp these barstewards!
-
That would explain it. Private car parks are out of government juristiction, so yes, confusion solved.
I also dislike people like that.
-
Well i see absolutely nothing wrong when i go to the supermarket at 8 o clock in the evening and park on the disabled spaces when there are another 20 free. I prefer doing that rather than being upset because of parking dents. But then again i like to follow my own rules based on common sense.

Me too... unfortunately im sometimes lacking in the latter ;D

Sadly an attribute that a large proportion of the population don't possess :(

I agree with the parking thing... there's no excuse for it. We've got a company car park and it's too small which means there's always people parked in the disabled bays. The office is visited by many, many people and I feel really sorry for anyone who would actually benefit using their blue badges and parking in the wider disabled bay.
Looking out the window I see more 4x4's, Merc's, Beamer's, Jags etc parking on the double yellows, in the disabled bays, on pavements etc than others (not to tar everyone with the same brush, I have to admit there's still a few regular motors amongst them!) Being a company car park on private land there's nothing done, even though we do actually have a huge overflow carpark that is literally a 20 seconds extra walk away.
Even when it's the middle of the night in a deserted car park I still get a surge of guilt when I contemplate parking in the disabled bays... but I don't always agree with the blue badge either. From what I understand (and feel free to correct me - I don't understand much these days ::)) the blue badge allows the holder to park on double yellows a well and that just doesn't always make sense at all, adding to the congestion etc.
As for the building changes to allow disabled access, I can understand it for new builds, but it just can't be possible either physically or financially for all business's in older property to make everything nice and accessible for everyone.
And one more thing, to round of my rant, I'm not sure how the blue badges are handed out but I get the feeling that there are a minority, and I sincerely mean that - I really do appreciate that some people genuinely need them, who perhaps don't really require them, and perhaps their realtives/friends should perhaps leave them with the person that needs them rather than think their car is now exempt.
Oooooh - while I'm still going (sorry - will end soon) how come those with the blue badges, again it's from my own understanding - correct away, are exempt from parking charges in car parks? I don't quite get that either...
No offence - just purely my own views, right or wrong - as I say, feel free to point me in the right direction (if there is one - think this is a probably bit of a minefield of legislation, political correctness etc...)

I have always assumed the except from charges is down to the fact that a disabled person generally has little choice but to drive somewhere, an able bodied person could cycle and therefore also be except from charges. (but that is just my guess!)
Oh, and ease off on the Jag drivers ;)
-
Aye - sorry 'bout the Jags... :) Got caught up in my rant.
Just out of interest I looked at the cars parked outside my office on the way to my my own and found a BMW Z4 parked not only in the disabled bay, but actually in the middle of two disabled bays... no badge, no nothing. I just hope somebody who needs to use them parks across them.

Whilst I don't believe (in most circumstances) non disabled drivers should use these spaces, it annoys me more when I see orange badge holders abuse their rights...

As I've stated in previous messages, I have a severely mentally and physically handicapped daughter - She cannot talk or understand anything other than the simplest things, and she uses a wheelchair for any distance over about 50mtrs
Our local Asda has disabled bays right in front of the store, and the local Taxis park there constantly - I got so annoyed last year that I deliberately parked right behind one (not in any bay at all) and left my car there for two hours, even though I could have done the shopping I wanted in 15 minutes! I think I got my point across as I've never seen that particular driver park there since!
My other pet hate is the morons that park right up to the tailgate of my car and don't leave any room for me to get the wheelchair out - Even though there is a sticker on the rear screen that asks other motorists to leave a six foot gap to allow access.
Being a person with a genuine problem as far as my daughter is concerned, I'm afraid I have no time for idiots that don't appreciate (or even want to appreciate) the problems involved!
Okay, rant over (for now!).
Regards
Eddy

At the local supermarket a few weeks ago, a 'Rich Bitch' in a Merc pulled parked in a disabled bay, as she walked into the supermarket I said to her 'You look disabled', she gave me a look to kill.
-
I agree 100% about disabled bays and would personally never use them, but do get frustrated looking for a "Parent & Toddler" space to find 10 disabled spaces unused and all the baby one's full of the same abusers that like to park in a bigger space, but I still won't use them.
Had to drive Mrs C away from rowing with a woman at Asda last month - thought it was gonna come to blows and she's only 5'3" as she reversed infront of her to slot her mini in a kiddy space.
Why not buy some of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JOKE-PARKING-TICKETS-x-50-WIND-SOMEONE-UP-GREAT-FUN_W0QQitemZ150082293593QQihZ005QQcategoryZ58740QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The tick list inside includes boxes for being inconsiderate or parking too close. You'll feel better for it and it worth hanging around to watch the colour drain from their face when they see it ;)
-
The most crazy thing is, that the people who do miss use them are the ones that spend 1+ hours a night at a private members Gym.....
They claim to be fit an healthy yet are to dam idle to walk 200 meters from a parking spot to a shop.....

Maybe he parked there as a mentally disabled driver? You have to be pretty brain-dead to drive an X5 :-[

You've seen me Dave, I'm NOT a big guy, but I've been known to confront tw*ts who mis-use disabled spaces, it's a huge bugbear of mine.
The other night I was at Tesco. I parked in a normal bay, which was near the disabled bay. A woman came out of the store, probably late 20's, wearing a little skirt, thinking she owned the world. She walked over to this 06 reg VW, that was in a disabled space, and got in.
I managed to bite my lip and didn't go say anything.....
..... Until I saw a bag full of rubbish come FLYING out of the drivers window.
I picked up the bag of rubbish, and walked over to her car. She wound down the window, and I said "I think you dropped something that belongs to you...." .... and then proceeded to throw the bag of rubbish (inc manky banana skins!!) into the car!! The look on her face was priceless... she was too shocked to speak, but needless to say I felt a lot better.
Usually I'm very very placid, but this mentality I cannot stand.
Doubt she'll park in a disabled bay and throw bags of rubbish out of the window again ;D

You often see young lads at McDonalds type places just throw their rubbish out of the window. I to usually confront, because it is sheer laziness. As is using Disabled spaces (unless they are the only ones left, which happens where I work).

On the litter angle, I agree with your tactics. Its also a pet hate of mine.
Its not the first time I have witnessed some rubbish being ejected from a moving car then stopped it to speak to the culprit (perk of the job). They then get offerred a choice.....
Accept a ticket and proceed on their way, or turn about and return to where it was thrown away and reclaim it. If they go for the latter, I generally follow to ensure its done.
Can take a wee chunk of their time away from them, as well as their petrol and the embarrassment factor ensures its probably not done again!
-
Now theres a big pet hate of mine. Littering. It really doesn't take much to chuck it in a bin. I hate when my friends do it, and usually take the piss out of them and use some form of extreme sarcasm. Works, but for some reason I don't have a lot of friends anymore :(

Gosh cant believe I havent seen this thread before!!
As a disabled driver myself (wheelchair user) it also narks me off seeing these things get abused.
I have stickers in my rear window asking people to leave me space to get my wheelchair in and out yet people choose to ignore them. One of these days I'm going to just let the tailgate open into someones car rather than sit there waiting for the culprit to return.
A lot of able bodied people seem to think we dont matter or just dont think at all about the way they treat disabled people, a little consideration would go a long way.
At my local Asda I regularly see taxi drivers (the worst offenders) and Police parking in disabled bays or blocking access to disabled bays jsut so they can get to a cashpoint. One of these days I'm gonna go militant on them and block them in with my car and leave it there, especially the taxi drivers - hitting their earnings might make them think a bit more next time.
Even those who say they only do it late at night - why is that justification? Most wheelchair users I know prefer to do their shopping late at night as its quieter. How can anyone know when a disabled person is likely to turn up and need to park?
We don't particularly want larger parking spaces or for them to be closer to the shop, its a question of need, not want. When I'm getting in and out of my car I need access to the drivers door and the tailgate. If either of those is blocked I can't go anywhere, simple as. I didn't ask for this need and certainly don't want it, butI have it so have to jsut get on with it.
I don't necessarily agree with the blue badge system either, mainly because I know several disabled people who are genuinely disabled but canot get badges as they refuse to claim DLA. Its scandalous that some councils refuse to issue badges to disabled people simply because they are not claiming a benefit that they dont want, but thats another story.
Finally please be careful who you harass in car parks - there are many people who are genuinely disabled but have "invisible" disabilities, particularly those with MS and various mental health problems. They are just as in need of assistance as someone who uses a wheelchair. It could even be argued that us wheelchair users don't necessarily need to be closer to the shop as we don't have to walk. I've heard that one before.

I agree with most of your post, and as said, I won't use these spaces unless there is no other supermarket/work parking (on places round here likely to get so busy that no other choice).
However, the 'invisible' disabilities, which I agree with, do not account for some of the orange badge abuse I see - perfectly abled people, not requiring help, using these orange badges to get free parking near the shops. I suspect a lot of people borrow badges/cars from disabled family members etc.

Thing is though, my Mum has a very bad back. To all intents and purposes she doesn't look or move like she's disabled because she's learned over the years how to manage it. She can't however walk very far unassisted.
She has a disabled badge for use in her car and I wonder how often people think that she's 'at it'!

I do agree.
However, during the christmas rush, 4 young lads got out of some crappy toyota thingie with an orange badge - none of them looked anything other than fully abled. I really do believe they borrowed the car just so they could get free parking.

Highways in the US have roadside signs dotted at random intervals that read: "$1000 fine for littering" :o. Funnily enough you don't see much litter lying at the side of the road.

I agree you shouldnt park in disabled bays, unless intitled to....and even being a taxi driver i dont!
But what gets my goat is most supermarkets have taxi bays and its the same thing.....ordinary car drivers carnt be botherd to walk and park in the taxi pick up points! I once blocked in an ordinary car in to pick my passenger and the other driver blew his horn coz he couldnt get out...i went over and told him your in the taxi pick up area so you'll have to wait....he wasnt happy....but i'll do that every time if i see an ordinary car in the taxi pick up points....
Other thing that annoys me......and i apologise to disabled drivers on here if they are not guillty of doing this......my local hospital has 6 taxi bays next to the disabled bays.....and 9/10 times when im at the hospital i cannot get into a taxi bay because the disabled bay is full and disabled drivers have parked in the taxi bays......what gives them the right to do that......sorry but i think thats just sticking the blue badge in the window and i can park anywhere! Ok fair enuf the disabled parking is full.....therefore if your a blue badge car owner......park it on double yellows....in a safe and non blocking position.....your allowed 2hrs iirc...not in taxi bay! Rant over too ::)

I remember, a few decades ago, I had to pick someone up at York railway station.
As I had never been there before, I was unfamiliar to the layout. As I drove in I noticed a gap between cars facing a wall. Great, I thought, and duly drove into it. Then I noticed a small sign, bonnet high, that said Taxis Only.
Oh s**t I thought, as I put it into reverse to back out, this bloke appeared and hammered furiously on my window. 'Can't you f*****g read' he says, 'This bay is for Taxis Only'. I pointed out to him that I could read and was about to find another parking place. 'A likely f*****g story' he said, and continued to rant, rave and swear at me.
Anyway, I ignored him, and drove round several times until I found a place.
This taxi driver, and I presume, his mates, were sat on a bench visibly laughing at me trying to find another place.
Anyway, I picked up my friend, and we started to drive off.
As we passed this bench full of taxi drivers, I wound down the window and said, 'You're doing a grand job'.
At this point the taxi driver flew off the bench and tried to grab me through the window, I let out the clutch, and he got his arm wedged between me and the seat belt.
I continued to drive slowly, with him running along side of me, trying to free his arm.
I then braked sharply, he went A over T, and I drove off with a smirk on my face.

F'n years ago, I had cause to have to offload some stuff from the back of my Cortina estate in Stirling.
The only place that wasn't double yellows in the vicinity was a taxi rank, so I went to the Police Station and got a permit which allowed me, (the officer's words not mine!), to park anywhere I saw fit as long as it wasn't unsafe.
So I parked the car as unobtrusively as possible near the back of the rank and went about my business.
The taxi operators were up in arms about it!! I was hurled abuse etc etc. Eventually two of them blocked me in from leaving when the time came. They didn't want to know about my dispensation!! I had to call the Police to get them to move their cabs.
Thing is tho', it's not just taxi operators that are snotty about their spaces. Try parking in any office carpark!! The flat cap's'll put a sticker on your window the second you're out of sight if you''re 1mm over the white line!! And people even get really arsey if you park outside their house!!! I pay m,y road tax, I've got every right to park there!! >:(
Bah! Humbug!!

Rod, I think i should explain something....
your Car tax entitles you to park on the road...
NOT in their driveway :y
Actually more seriously... if their driveway has lowered kerb edging... properly... then it is an access right of way, and you Cannot park across it.. road tax or no road tax.... and they are within their rights to have your car removed if you do obstruct their access.
If however, it does not have a lowered kerb edge then the local council has not (yet) granted such right of way... note that it should be an official lowered kerbing, not just a DIY ramp of path repair tarmac ....
( as a Student I spent 1 summer working with the Bucks County Highways Dept... mostly, replacing Kerb stone sets.)

I'd either blow horn until they moved - or ram the parentless children

Wouldn't ever block someone's driveway! Had enough of that on Saturday's 'cos we used to live near a football park!! I'm talking about just parking on the road outside their house.

Sounds like you encountered a hackney driver there AA >:( I have my views on Swindons hackney drivers....Im a private hire driver....theres a world of difference.....actually its only hackney drivers that are allowed to call themselves taxi drivers....perhaps i should change my name to Private Hire Driver :-/ or summat else?

sorry Rod... the emphasis on the first part should have been on the in , rather than the not.... " not IN their drive" I was making a piss poor attempt at a joke... then the practical dark side of me took over as i recalled the lowered kerb thing....
note to self... try and separate jokes from actual points.......
I did not intend to imply that you in fact deliberately obstruct driveways....
best regards

unless of course, they hold Joint operator licences.... and can do both Private Hire and Hackney Carriage Work.
(I dunno if that's still the case, but I did a stint in the taxis way back when........ and had a joint operator licence... JO097 i think it was.. in Wycombe District (Bucks) Drove nothing but Senators of course.... )
