I put my foot down in the turn in the road >:(
So annoyed as on Sundays training i was doing them all perfect, time and time again. The bugger was my test was at 8AM :o
So i had no time to warm up really, i managed to get a couple of turns in but i messed most of them up.
There is also a new test guy there, and he is a 'by the book' man picking up on everything.
That said, i only got 6 minors on the whole of the test (which was in rush hour), it was just my darn turn in the road :'(
Got re-test in 2 weeks, this time its at lunch time 8-)
Thinking of taking the test on a 125 instead of the 500, they are much easier to turn, all it means is i am restricted to 35bhp or something for 2 years, and would only shave 10mph of the top end of the ER5's which i am learning on.

Stick with the 500. 2 yrs is a long time! I bet you don't have the ER5 that long!

Go 125 on test...like you say the limted BHP will make sod all difference in real terms.
Just like pasing car test its not until after you pass you really start too learn...and on a bike mistakes can hurt.

the ER5 is plenty of power for my needs, from what i understand it reduces the top end from 115 to 105.
Which is not an issue, i can still scare myself on the 500 ;D

They say that washers are put in the heads or something, reducing the capacity down to 33bhp, so it just limits its top end....

Don't you believe it. Your acceleration will be painful.
Stick with the 500. Trust me, i'm a doctor.
edit - And they'll be the most expensive washers you ever buy!!

Ah well tunnie...you`ll get it right next time stick with the ER500 though as you`ll want the top end speed for motorways and i would not dare take a cg125 or any 125 on todays motorways..... ;)

My old GSXR600 was restricted as bought it off a newly passed rider...despite having a full license for a number of years it still had plenty of go in it even for me.
Not suggesting the sort of thing tunnie would suit but shows you not stuck with boring bikes while restricted.

Shame the lock on the ZX10 is so poor, else I'd ask the neighbour for the rugby club carpark ;)
But pointless trying on that - it physically cannot manage the u-turns required on tests

yeah i can't see any problem with restricting a bike, it will make hardly any difference really, just loose a bit of top end.
I would not want to ride a 125 normally, 60 flat out is not enough. The ER5's cruise nicely at normal speeds.
And at £80 per test, i want to pass!

Don't be so sure it won't make that much difference. The er5 etc haven't got that much power to start with, take away a 1/3rd, it'll be a dog.

i got the hardest U turn, the road had a camber on it. After test went up to a housing estate. guess what, first U turn i did was perfect!

thats the way it is - sounds like confidence is what let you down. camber makes no real difference, don't let those sort of thoughts enter your head :y

camber was noticable, and it was down into the turn, so as i went, it ran away further from me than normal, in the housing estate, i had the confidence to really drive it out of the turn.
Nope, its all in the head, hence why don't even think about things like the camber.

My old gpz750 was the same,the only bike that I regularily had do do 3 point turns on,heavy old lump as well.
I would advise to stick with what you are doing Tunnie,its simply a matter of practice.when you have done it enough times it becomes second nature and you stop worrying about it.Would help if you could practice away from the training test situation without pressure.

Best bit of advice i was given was to look at where you want to go , keep looking up never get fixated on a spot ,cos you will end up at that place ie in a ditch or a hedge

Seen someone look at a ditch at 70 (*cough*) mph going around a corner... ...guess what!

You will struggle on that manoeuver because of your build and lack of general strength!

Dont agree,Im similar build.Its not about strength its about balance/throttle control and confidence (which for some people requires a lot of practice)

Its technique not body mass thats required.
Look well ahead into the turn, not three feet in front of the wheel as its where you want to end up thats important, not how you get there.
Shifting your body weight to the outside of the turn (backside across the seat) lets you turn the bike tighter into the turn via the handle bars and, I find the most important, TURN YOUR HEAD to where you'r going....
I managed the test turns etc on my FJ1200 but, that said, been riding bikes for a couple of months more than you...... ;)

How easy to derestrict ?

unlucky Tuns. Just practice mate.
It depends on the lock of course but i found keeping it on full lock and adjusting your balance with just throttle and brake a good exercise. If more is lock needed give it gas to stop you dabbing.
And brake if it turns out. Much harder with less lock though.
Can you do a lesson on that bike in the mean time and do the course again?

I am in two minds, i am confident on the 500 general riding is fine, as is my clutch control.
One reason for learning was if i move to London i can bike to work, but a 500 is OTT for central London. A 125cc manual would do nicely on a 6 mile run to the office

One reason for learning was if i move to London i can bike to work, but a 500 is OTT for central London. A 125cc manual would do nicely on a 6 mile run to the office
You can go faster on a bigger bike and they are more resilient in traffic.

Stinkweeds will never die ;D ;D ;D ;D .Oh how I wished we had Aprilla 125's when i was a 17 year old ,had to suffer RD and LC's, X7's and KH triples .Ok maybe things wer'nt so bad in the late 70's and early 80's :D :D :D :D :D

Are they - I like small 2 strokes, they have character - I remember the CG125s though, they were crude at the time and didn't excite teenagers, I loved my old 100 - hydraulic disc was a novelty at the time and it was very tunable

Yeah when that happened it really ticked me off that I had a brillaint LC250 in me garage and i could'nt ride it :( It had Allspeeds, a port job, clip-on and rearsets 8-) 8-) 8-) Had to buy a suzuki TS 125 to get me to work as I was still learning to drive. Must have passed not long after that as I P/xed the TS with a guy for a Austin Maxi 1500,well thats another story altogether

When i sat my test - the advice i was given was to ride as if trying to lose the tester - it's their job to follow.
for London - if you're over 14- 15 stone I'd recommend at least 250 - just to get you out of difficulty quickly.
But practice cranking it open on a quiet road - after my test i bought a TDR 250, cranked it open a bit to pull out and SH1t myself as i saw sky!

Tho i do agree, you need power for driving in London......just got back from London, altho in my Viano.....and it reminded me.....you have to keep flooring it sometimes....to beat the lights ::) and also to keep about 12ins from the rear bumber in front of you.....give em an inch in London and they take a mile ;)
Didnt do any good for my fuel consumption tho......usually do about 38mpg on a run in it.....giving it welly in London brought it down to 29mpg av mpg :-[
