SWMBO wants an external hard drive (apparantly my 500GB with hardly anything on it isn't good enough for her to use). My previous experience with hard drives has been to stick to Seagate or Maxtor.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom that could help me out? :)
**Edit** Help me out with what to look for in an external hard drive, not just life in general :y

a normal hdd in an external enclosure will do the trick :y

That might not look pretty enough for SWMBO!! :D

In my experience some Seagate drives can be inclined to be rather-noisy when in use.......I`ve had good luck with Western Digital external HDD`s (and they are quiet and can auto-hibernate when not in use).
If you share data, you might consider an 'NAS' unit (a stand-alone HDD with both USB and ethernet connections).

hide it behind the comp she won't see it
or paint it pink and decorate it in flowers

;D That`s the next logical step in data storage: an HDD with a built-in air freshener. ;D

I've heard that the Maxtor drives can be noisy too, but the noise isn't going to bother me. I'll have a look at the Western Digital drives too though...
No need for a 'NAS' drive (whatever one of them might be :-?)

SWMBO'd probably go for it! She'll use it on her laptop in the front room :)

Avoid all this - go for a Mac!
No external hard drive, quiet as a mouse, and customized for my needs. No complaints here folks!

I think she's toyed with the Mac idea, but it was a no-goer...
I wouldn't know about Macs though, I've never used one :-[

I was in the same boat too, but a very good mate, who's a big-time Mac user converted me. Whilst I'm certainly no IT expert, I've not looked back. Suits me fine, but 'each to their own' I suppose!

could it just be that if she wants to use it on a laptop the one you have is too bulky? personally i have one of these http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141558 they are good because.
1. they are small(fit in my palm)
2. dont need external power(powered from usb)
3. come in all different colours and hdd sizes, my 320gb is enough for what i use it for, plus i have 2x1tb at home anyway (and 4x500gb in pc)
maybe thats just the thing?
cheers

Hi Nathan, that's not it. She only uses that laptop in the house in the front room. The main computer (my desktop) is upstairs which is where my external HDD is. I've told her it can live downstairs though, because I don't very often use it. She's adamant she needs her own one downstairs though :D :-X She's paying for it though, she just wants to know which one to buy...
