Title: Senator Rad update with pics
Post by: tunnie on 22 January 2007, 16:44:26
Popped out to Tesco today, mate was driving...

Loads of town driving, never went above 50... went to, halfords, comet, tescos. all in different retail parks lots of stop starts...

Now on the last stretch home noticed steam coming out of the front grill, got worse as we got back. When we got home, there was quite a lot of steam.

Strange thing is coolant is about where it was before... coolant tank barley gone down a cm max...

Also the front leccy fan for the air-con was also wet  :o :-/

Piccys, hard to capture steam:

The Rad is bad shape i know, i think the best option is to replace....

Not the healthiest rad I have ever seen! ;)

As for photographing steam.... it's easy, as long as you can get the cooling system to produce enough! Mark is your man for this task!  ;D

Oh dear, not very nice[smiley=huh.gif]

Still £300, can't really complain

On the subject of £300 (£345 to be exact) - Decided to have my 60,000 mile service, cambelt and pulleys done next Monday :-/

Cambelt was done at 40k but no documented proof.  You guys have finally worried me enough to have it done, would be a complete disaster if it was to break.

Its something people don't think about really, i should get mine done. I asked for it when i bought it, but until i found this place i did not know the proper way.

Hoping a replacement rad should not be too steep.

It needs to be one from a Senator with aircon as I seem to recall they are different to non aircon models....

remember the coolant expands when hot. Check when cold, level will have dropped.

Not worth messing with 2nd hand rads imho....

£80 quid  :o

£125 for a Brand new rad...  :-/

Hummm.. i can't afford either really, i was hoping for a £20 quid on a second hand rad ...

If it was my main car, brand new rad would go in... but i didn't want to spend that much on it really.

A second hand rad should be ok thats in fairly good shape? Or at least better than my current one.

Buy a cambelt kit, oil and filters etc, and do it yourself ;)

If only I had the time.  On site most weeks and weekends just seem to come and go without me noticing them.  I also need a working car at the end of it...

Tunnie,

I told you I had one for the price of postage!!

Anyway, the difference in the rad's is Auto/Manual transmission. If your car's an auto, make sure the replacement rad's got the oil cooler in the offside tank!!

Mine is an auto.... is the rad a different shape for the manuals then?

Nah, more or less the same shape, but the auto rad's got a couple of pipes out of the off side tank to cool the transmission oil.
