Title: Ship wreck at Branscombe (pics)
Post by: Steve W on 21 January 2007, 21:47:13
Went round to my parents house earlier in South Devon, and we took a walk along the cliff top a couple of miles from their house to see how much damage this is going to do. It's not pretty, and its going to get worse. It is quite bizarre to watch containers floating along in the current towards Weymouth though.

Sure one of those containers said GM on the side  :D

If i lived there i'd be sooooo tempted to go down and see whats there, never know Rolex might have had a years supply of watches on there, or GM sending over crate full of Omega parts  ;) :D

Joking aside, does look bad and amazing pics!

I only caught a bit of on the news, force9 gale cause it but then they ran it a-ground on purpose to stop it sinking.

The gale did it break the back of the ship or something i heard, because it ran a-ground before and had extensive repairs in Vietnam.

How on earth do you even start to think about how you might start to clean that lot up?

Didn't BMW loose a whole ship load of cars once? When all the containers fell off and sank?

Couldn't happen to a nicer company ;)

You think your Omegas are unreliable? Nothing compared to BMW warranty claims....

I think this was the first delivery of Volvo XC90 to the UK a couple of years ago...

I saw one one the news tonight - being liberated by a local tractor owner. If it gets the stuff off the beach I say good luck to them - it'll all be insured anyway, why wait.  :y

Most have been removed by eBay already.

My own opinion: these are not lucky people who stumbled upon a piece of flotsam while strolling along the beach. They're looters, plain and simple.

I have no sympathy for the people resonsible....they could have hired security and got salvage crews in within hours of it happening (its been quite a few days now) and they didn't, probably because it would have been easier and cheaper if the stuff had been taken away by others.

Its only the bad publicity that has caued the U turn....

Hmm, not sure about that. First they needed specialist salvage to remove the bunker oil from the ship's tanks and then heavy lifting gear to get the containers (and from a beach that's no easy task). This takes time to put in place. Secondly, they couldn't get private security to cordon off the beach as it's a public right of way. Thirdly, these people were determined - setting fires and actually breaking into secure containers (despite the potential hazards). It was a police job, in my view. Very much doubt if they actually wanted the cargo taken away (certainly not the BMW bikes, at any rate).

They could have got everything they needed in hours if they had been organised....they could have recovered the cargo from the containers as they washed up onto the beach....just like the public were doing.

It would only have taken a call to Pickfords or similar with a wedge of cash....add a private security firm into the equation (takes little to get approval for this as its no different to say a major show in a public park)

Reality is that the container contents are damaged....the BMW bikes are worth less than their original value as they have been for a swim so the owners wont want them.

Salvage rights state that an item recovered should be registered with the Police and that the owner/insurance company has upto 1 year to pay a salvage fee for return ....

They only changed their mind because its turns out its going to cost even more due to the mess these people are leaving....

I have no sympathy.....
