Now that my Miggy has gone to the great Omega retirement home, I need to think about a replacement car.
Whilst I would love another Omega estate, I would be looking at a car that's already six years old.
So, I'm thinking of a Mondeo estate. I can't quite stretch to the latest shape model though.
Thoughts? Is their anything major to look out for, and what's considered the best forum for information.
TIA,
Mark

Ugh - a neighbour has one - don't like it
Sorry but 2003 Elite is best bet and run for a while
You may find things different but I don't like any new cars available at realistic money.
-
If I had 5 to 10 thousand I have no real idea.
However if you are happy with wrong wheel drive look at Honda Accord, Skoda Octavia as well
RWD world
BMWs hold money too well and are no better than Omegas
Mercedes less of them but more bigger ones
Toyotas - a few Lexii but not many.
-
Friend of mine went to a Mondeo estate from a Mig. He hated it and had loads of trouble with the clutch. He's now back in a Mig :y

I have to say, I dont know.....not much out there these days in the 'larger' category.
Lexus - Needs to be a big one as the IS200 range is rather tiny with no head room
Audi A4 - As above, no head room, small interior and a load capacity smaller than an Astra.
-
If you need a newer estate, what about a vectra?
-
About the only comparable estate car I can think of is a Volvo V70 or maybe a Merc E? Both will make maintaining an Omega in working order seem trivial (and cheap).
Accord estate is reasonably roomy IIRC..
Most newish cars these days are so dull and mundane I can't be arsed to think about them. ;)
I'm sure you could find a nice Omega. Yes, it'd be 6 years old but that doesn't necessarily mean knackered...

but then its an (albeit upmarket) Astra size car. A6 and A8 are the larger family and exec cars :-/

Don't do it!!!!
Get a nice Omega estate. You know what you're doing and looking for and they're worth pennies at the moment :y :y :y

Spot on...
There good value for money to be honest, ive considored one but need something with more muscle than a 3.0 these days.... :-X
-
One close friend from job have Mondeo..
Not bad but nothing special..
imho if size is important replacement for a miggy can be 5 series BMW, Volvo S60 series (T5 models really fast) , Subaru Legacy or Toyota Camry.. All are good cars..
and if you want performance for cheap and something you can play with, check for Scooby WRX series ..

passat? terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tired.

And not as big as an Omega estate.....i remember a job, moving a wardrobe......wouldnt go in his jag estate, it would in the Omega :y

Put a private plate on a 2003 mig and no-one would know its 6 year old as they look great :y

Got to agree. Can't think of anything else where you can have so much car for so little money, paying for the badge on a lot of cars :y

New or nearly new cars feel sanitized & soulless. On top of the depreciation you have to main dealer stamp the service book @ huge prices to save losing even more. In a year or two's time it'll be worth half what you paid & still be too clinical & devoid of character for you to "love it" You could take advantage of the credit crunch & bag a cheap ex demo for a good discount as dealers are struggling, but i still would'nt do it. In 5 years time it'll hardly be worth a couple of grand, the market's flooded with 'em. Gun to my head i'd look for a nice Merc estate. Doubt you'll find an active forum for such a mundane car.
I politely suggest you go onto the gallery, look at Broocie's (Hotel 21) new baby & have a long hard think!!! It's your money mate. ::) :y

i currently looking at trading the omega in for a signum. beautiful high spec cars going for peanuts.

I like the Signum but...
... It's Wrong Wheel Drive

I suspect I will be driving cheap old cars into the ground for some years to come....

What will kill Omegas will be spares availability.
Don't tend to rust too much, take high mileages.
Just needs a couple of parts to become non available (and noone takes on manufacture) and the number will plummet.
-
Usually it's rust that kills a car, not that the rust is terminal, just the fact that the car is worth less than the cost of the welding required.
-
A Mondeo does what it says on the tin - and nowt else.
Audi - badge chasers. Only buy if residual values are a major concern. BMW? Maybe but make sure the first owner hit all the options buttons. Merc? Usually overpriced underpowered and under-specced.
Off the wall suggestions (assuming an Estate) would be Chrysler 300C (Mig sucessor?), Subaru Legacy (right and wrong wheel drive)? Buy at 3 years old and some other poor sod has footed the depreciation..
If you can cope with FWD, then the floodgates open up...
-
You said in your initial post that the last Migs are hitting 5 years old.
So?....... :-[ :-?

i struggles with this when i was choosing the replacement for my miggy....
Had to be comfy, auto, economical, and have a degree of personality as well as being an estate car, the size was not the key issue, although it had to be able to carry people in a degree of comfort.
I ended up with my 156 Sportwagon Selespeed.
Very comfy indeed, yes it is WWD, however with double wishbone suspension front and rear it has very good handling charictaristics, it is not a true auto, instead it has a semi automatic system that i better suited to a 2.0 that a fully auto system that has bigger transmission losses.
Fun to drive and has a personality, with the quick rack it has sharp handling that is very communicative
-
Good choice. Very nice car the 156 sportwagon :y
-
Rear wheel drive is what counts, and non German suspension comfort so back to a late low mlge 3.2v6 Elite, anyway most other cars just don't have the individuality of a Miggy most look like insects just my opinion.Jags could be considered an exception, only I think all estates are tractors. There are some S types with 4Ltr motors, and all the toys. :y
-
I do wonder how much rear Wheel drive is nostalgia, yes you can have more fun, but as you have all experienced, how crap is rwd in the snow compared to Front wheel Drive, lots of comments, look at all the 'snow' threads. I drive a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, 7 seater, agreed, no sports car, but comfortable, spacious and economical in diesel form.. ideal as a daily car, can then use the Mig as a toy.. :y
-
When I'm done with the Mig I'll probably go back to a 4x4. Most likely a Grand Cherokee :)
