maybe its me being over protected again with my kids but im not sure what to think. i know its on the increase a lot in britain but need a bit of advice. what are the signs, my youngest seems to break out in sweats for no reason, knackered after a 10 min walk. wakes up dripping in sweat usually after taking ages to get to sleep. would it be worth taking him up the hosp, or can he get a walk in test done anywhere, or home testing kits??
-
I was diagnosed type 2 last may , symptom was unable to read number plates clearly from about 30 foot. they did a blood test results were 18.4 - should be between 4 - 8 :o
best bet is take him down the Quacks for a blood test very quick - prick the finger drop of blood on strip, stick in hand held machine , few seconds later you have the answer

first easy signs of diabetes in kids is constantly being thirsty and so tired can fall asleep spontaniously.
i'm frightened to death of becoming diabetic because it runs in my family and if i got type1 diabetes it would cost me my lgv license

he seems to be half a mile behind me when we are walking, always drinking something, hes actually sitting besides me now with sweat pouring off him. im shivering and the window is wide open.

I would advise going to the doctor,
-
I am borderline just under the limit, but the quack keeps a record of it.

I think they call that embarrassment, :D :D don't work yourself up into a bother, make and appointment and take him to a doctor, will answer your questions in moments. :y

i told my x to do that but she doesnt see anything wrong, so will do it myself on monday, im a real worrier, just like my mother, not a good way to be. :(

you can get a stick for him to wee on and check sugar level. simpler than pricking his finger and think can be got from a chemist.
i'm not well clued up on diabetes i only know from from family members experiences.
i get paranoid and call at dads to prick my finger and stick the viel in his machine have managed 11 but 30minutes later am back down to 7.

Weeing constantly through the night, constantly requiring drinks, rapid weight loss, forever feeling tired and lethargic, are all the first key signs of diabetes. :(
It is very easy for any doctor to check the blood sugar levels, and even some chemists, like the national chain Lloyd's, will undertake a test. 8-) 8-)

That doesnt sound a very controlled test for diabetes.....
Test results are dependant on what you've eaten and drunk in the previous 24hrs.
I had a diabetes test done about a year ago as part of other blood tests......my result was 10.....but marked on the test as uncontrolled....as they didnt know what i had eaten in the previous 24hours......so my doc wanted another one done, controlled.
I had to fast for 24hours, only allowed water.
Test results were 7 this time
My Doc reckons its borderline, so wants an 'absolute' test done.
This test (which i havent had done yet) involves again fasting for 24hours....blood test done, then drink a glucose mixture, sit and wait for 2 hours, and then another blood test done.....apparently it tests your body for tolerance to sugar......

That is very unusual TD, as usually you have to fast only from 2200 hours the night before the morning of your test. ;)
This result gives an "average" sugar level, rather than purely a "spot check" one taken just two hours after eating. :y
The ideal blood sugar level is 5.7 8-)

have you smelled his breath ,if you can smell as sweet smell then it would be a good idea to have a test done The wife says Boots do an
accurate test

You spotted my deliberate mistake Lizzy :y :)
Yep i meant 12 hours.....i had appointment at around 10am and told to fast from 10pm....
Sorry....bit tired tonight....dont know why.....only worked 13 hours today ::) Right off to give OOF dog walkies and dinner, then takeaway for me :y
-
As someone has already said, random "spot" testing cannot accurately diagnose condition, too many variables like last eaten, what had to eat and drink and stuff..... Easier for gp to diagnose with blood tests and then confirm if necessary with GTT (glucose tolerance test, drinking glucose then testing again after two hours).....
hope all goes well... :y
-
best to goto the docs really and get it sorted out for sure...I know our doc likes to test me every so often as me mum was a diabetic....plus me being overwieght dont help... :-[
-
when i went to the quack and was tested at 18.4 they referred me to the diabetic clinic at the local hospital - assumed they guessed i was diabetic due to being "slighty" morbidly obese ::)
as i was clearly diabetic they stuck be on tablets and issued me with kit/instructions to test every 4 waking hours(from memory) had to call the diabetic nurse every day to relay the pin-prick results.
I was told to get a fasting blood test a week later (12 hours without food food/drink - sips of water allowed)

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 5 years ago, when I was 58. Never had any of the symptoms you mention, and still don't. My blood sugar levels were controlled by diet for about 3 years, but I'm on medication now, as the levels are gradually increasing, which is normal for the disease.
I'm surprised about the blood test information appearing here - the usual diabetic monitoring test is known as "HbA1c" and doesn't require fasting. The fasting blood test is for high cholesterol levels, I think.
High cholesterol, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes are all associated with being overweight and/or smoking. I became very severely overweight (obese, actually) after I gave up smoking 8 years ago. The diabetes is probably hereditary - my father had it. Funnily enough, my brother, who has edited a book on diabetes and knows an awful lot about it, has managed to avoid it so far.
Take the child to the doctor - don't muck about with self testing. The doctor will be able to do an immediate test using either a urine strip or a finger prick - instant results. If the blood glucose levels are high, there will be further tests.

think i will get my daughter checked out she seems to be lossing weight but we put it down to that she won't eat her meals keeps saying she is full
and is always going to the toilet at night :-?
-
My daughter was diagnosed as type 1 diabetic when she was 11 (now 33)
Take her straight to Doctor
Type 1 is far more serious than type 2 (maturity onset)
If she is Type 1 she will be insulin dependant for life I'm afraid

I think that is the difference Jereboam, as you did not have it as bad as some others. I almost left it too late when being diagnosed with diabetes type 2, and collapsed at work after I had ignored the growing symptoms. ::) ::) ::)
I was placed immediately on medication, Metformin amongst others, and now are on all that plus heavy doses of insulin. :P :P
The message has got to be for everyone that if you feel any of the symptoms in your self, or see it in others, go and seek medical advice! Don't leave it too late as I almost did, when I knew all my mothers family had diabetes, and both my grandfather and grandmother died from its effects, along with one uncle!! :'(

It is very very rare for children to suffer from type 2 which can be controlled by diet
Please get her to your GP as soon as possible
The consequences of not treating type quickly 1 are very serious!!!

I am afraid to say Pitchfork this is no longer true as a growing number of children are diagnosed with type 2, up to 45% of those diagnosed, in recent surveys, as opposed to the past when it was primarily, usually, type 1 for children. Now it is not and it is this that is very worrying for all involved in diabetic treatment, let alone parents of children. :(

OK I stand corrected. Clearly the situation has changed radically in the past 22 years. The remedy? - well to start off get rid of McDonalds, KFC, Coca-Cola & other purveyors of crap food & drink that is making children obese & liable to become type 2 diabetics. Thank goodness that my 2 grandsons are fed a healthy diet by responsible parents with the intelligence to realise the consequences of feeding children rubbish!

Absolutely right Pitchfork!! :y :y :y
This is the ONLY way to stop a very damaging trend in the next generation, who most certainly will not enjoy life to the full if drastic changes are not made to lifestyle NOW! :'( :'( :'(

We have quite a few members on this site who extol the virtues of McDonalds & KFC. How about we all start & sign up to a campaign to get rid of these health damaging purveyors of junk food?
Would we have the backbone to live by a thoroughly healthy diet?
How many would be prepared to become vegetarian I wonder?
(I should have added Lager [Eurofizz)]to the list of drinks to be banned!)

Do you know how to create such a web site? :-? :-? I personally have no idea of how to! ::) ::)

Kill themselves as a right? OK but I do not want to pay for the NHS attempts at saving their bloated frames or clogged arteries. Electronics manufacturers have to pay for the disposal of their products at end of life (WEEE) so why not junk food vendors paying a premium based on the number of mechanically recovered meat products they sell to the NHS for their services, or perhaps to crematoria for their recycling of the obsese?
