Title: Insurance Settlement
Post by: Mr Hagon on 27 February 2009, 21:39:05
Well the insurers have been in touch, via e-mail, and their first settlement offer is as expected.

£1150.

But, they've not received the paperwork that they've requested and that includes an awful lot of service history.

Come to think of it, having only had it serviced two weeks before the accident, I would like to think I could get some of that money back too.

Anyone have any thoughts on the settlement?  This is for a T plate 3.0 saloon Elite with 107k, but well kept with no discernable rust, oil changes every 6k and cambelts done on time.

Mark

Without sounding disrespectful, in all fairness thats just over what the car is probably worth pre-accident so not a bad offer, but if it was me I would never accept a first offer regardless.

Best of luck with it mate and its a shame to see such a nice Mig trashed.

As others have said, sounds a reasonable offer, however, again, as others have said, dont accept the first offer.......even if they only bump it up by 50-100 its worth it  :y

Thats not bad for a first offer TBH given s/h prices at the moment it probably won't rise much...sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I supplied the receipt for a re-con'd engine and that made a big difference on my Carlton settlement, but new discs and pads all round on an Astra GTE made no difference at all.

Unfortunately receipts for general servicing and the replacement of consumables are unlikely to make a difference. They will argue that you should be doing those to keep the car roadworthy.

Going by what was in that HonestJohn article, then sod the money - you want a car in the same condition as the one they're writing off as it wasn't your fault (but go for a few quid for "incovenience"...).  If you find one in the meantime for £1k or so, then pocket the rest and run..

I've heard of an insurance company buying a car AND having it resprayed to replace a written off (think it was stolen) one - but that was an agreed valuation policy.

Agree with what others have said as it seems a fair valuation unfortunately. The point is whether you can get a car of similar spec and condition for the money offered. For eg if my S reg mig was written off I'd want the money to buy a replacement for what I had lost and that would inc some of the more expensive things that I'd done recently such as new cambelt/ aux belt/ oil cooler (as opposed to new tyres/exhaust/pads etc).If I found that the money offered me would buy me a similarly speced car, probably of roughly the same age and mileage BUT that I,d then have to spend money again on new cambelt whatever I would argue the case for getting a higher valuation. Keep hold of all recent reciepts for more costly work and if their offer remains well short, demand an engineer to come out and inspect. Did this once with an old car of mine that had literally just passed its MOT and for which I had just forked out on a new head when some t*at drove into me and wrote it off.The original offer matched its "book price" but because it was in such good condition for its age and because of the recent work carried out, the engineer agreed on a higher value. Of course all old (and loved )cars are worth far more to their ownwers than market value but it still remains the point that any valuation should fairly reflect the cost of a comparable replacement. Dont expect to get much more but ,equally, dont just accept their first offer. Good luck !! :y

Can only speak from past experience....when my Estate was classed as a write off instead of writing too me and making an offer i had a bloke phone me up and we decided the value over the phone.

All he was prepared too do was look in auto trader and use that as a guide price....he also made it quite clear the offer wasn't a 1st second or third but a FINAL offer.

Still we agreed on £1100 i believe which was a nice touch considering the car cost £600 if memory serves me correct.
