Title: The Book (Red) arrived
Post by: TheBoy on 22 January 2007, 12:35:45
The new Red The Book with TC prices in has just arrived (only about 2 weeks late!).  I see oil and coolant has gone up though :(, which is a shame as the Rover will need a lot of flushing :(

About 70p for 5l of oil, only about 30p for coolant.

With the 4 for 3 offer on oil, that makes it just over £30 inc VAT for 4 x 5l of semi....

Not too bad then, i am going to need more soon to flush the old stuff out of the Senator.

It is a mixture of swings and roundabouts. (I have had my new one about 10 days now).

The coolant is still very well priced, I paid £8.50 for 5 litres of the red stuff on Saturday.

Elsewhere prices of some bits have come down....

All in, the prices are very appealing still. :)

The oil in particular seems to be going up regularly - if I were a cynic, I would say this was to pay for the 4 for 3 offer, which looks like it will be permenent now...

I agree, TC very worthwhile :y

I just checked oil and coolant, as that is what I need for the Rover....

Got mine today ....had a quick scan, it all seems to have gone up  :(

Fancy adding 1p to price of an oil filter (2.0/2.2) , outrageous  ;D

Mine didn't come through yet... :(

I get my oil from Costco, around £21 for 4L of the finest Mobil-1  :)

Mind you, it's £13 per 1L retail at Esso petrol stations...

But for thr Rover, if you intend to flush the engine using several quick oil changes, then Mobil-1 is a rather flamboyant way of doing it...  ;D

I noticed that :(

Still, I often don't get my filters on TC, I often get them on special offers in packs of 20 (cheaper than TC).  I use a few, as does one of my brothers on his 2 Astras.  Excess goes on ebay.

Vx semi goes in everything here - The MV6, the Rover, the Kawasaki, even the Honda lawnmower....

Wow, that oil is uber cheap! Think I'll be asking one of the locals to get me some on the next meet. When I had the Subaru I used to pay ~£35 for 4 litres of Castrol Formula RS, plus another £13 for 1 litre... robbing gits, it always amazed me that the more expensive the oil the less you get in a bottle. Are there any cars on the planet that take 4L or less of oil during a change?!? Joys of owning a hard-driven turbocharged car :(

BTW How much is fully synth on TC, and what viscosity? Does anyone know who makes it?

I was always advised against using car oil in the bike, due to the friction modifiers possibly affecting the bite of the wet clutch. Is it bull? I was a little sceptical, but seeing as fully synth bike oil is no more expensive than the car equivalent (and you need less) I just stuck with bike stuff.

I did not yet get my new Red Book and the TC website is not updated yet so I don't have pricing...

But I can say that Vx semi-synth is 10W-40, full-synt used to be 5W-40 but is now 5W-30. No idea who makes it and I don't think anyone here actually knows  :o

Halfords full-synth is Esso Ultron according to Honest John, and so it should be very good - as Esso make Mobile-1 as well... hmmm... oil thread....  :)

Think fully synth is normally around twice the price? always got semi from Vaux.

I bought a load of oil for the Senator a few weeks ago, paid £8.50 odd ish + Vat for 5L of GM Semi Synth, wondered over to halfrauds for that socket set that was on offer.... I almost fell over at the prices of oil in there. £46 for 5L GTX Magnetic, I know its fully synth but that price is obscene!  >:(

Cheapest stuff was halfrauds own brand at £11 for 5L

I could change the oil, on both our 2.2's Omega's and the Senator for less than 1 bottle of the above. Along with all the oil filters!

Apparantly, the Vx oil is supplied by Fuchs.....

Fully synth is 5-30....

Tractor exhausts tend to last longer - maybe not common enough to warrant putting on TC?

Not all the parts are in the book.....and tractor exhausts dont last longer than petrol.....they dont get as hot so dont dry the condensation out as wll.....

All the diesels I've had, never had to replace tractor exhaust... ...do they create as much water? Are they thicker (for noise suppression)?

Yes they produce as much water and no they are not thicker......with exhausts its luck of the draw and on Taxis they never get cold so never have much condensation in them....

The only thing that might make them last a bit longer is the way they coat the insides with soot!

That old white rover than towed the bugger van I believe is still on original exhaust - 170k, 11yrs - and does a lot of short journeys...

I think it may have to do with.....some manus fit doubled skinned exhausts....so from new will last quite a while....but cheap nasty fit places only use single skinned so rust thro quicker.

I know on a BMW 735i i once had....it went for a mot 12 years old......mot tester pointed out the outside skin was full of holes.....but as it wasnt blowing from the inside skin he couldnt fail it.
