Title: 3 litres vs 2.5 litres - what's the difference?
Post by: Grrrrrr on 27 February 2009, 15:52:43
I'm thinking of changing my current saloon for an estate as I'm planning on another child. While I'm about it I though I might upgrade from a 2.5 unit to a 3.0l and go for an MV6. However, looking at the Parker's figures it seems the 2.5 is just as quick getting to 60 and has better fuel economy. So where's the advantage of a 3 litre?

Just what exactly is the difference between a 2.5 and 3.0 performance-wise?

Incidentally, if I do find the right car I'll be looking to shift a 2.5 unit with only 105k ont he clock and I've changed the oil every 4k miles so it still runs pretty smooth.

There is a massive difference in overall performance between my MV6 estate and my 2.5 Elite saloon...

The MV6 goes a hell of alot better for a start, also feels more comfortable at 'speed' and doesnt feel as laboured just in regards to general driving.

Economy wise, very little in it, atleast I've noticed very little difference...  MV6 uses a bit more fuel at 70 (like 1 or 2mpg less), but at 50 its better than the 2.5.  Around town at 30 or whatever there is again very little in it.

MV6 also sounds ALOT more beasty, there is a significant difference in how much more throaty it sounds.  Both the Elite and the Estate have full Bosal aftermarket systems, so its not like different brands are making them sound different...

All in, I like the 3.0 more :) Even if the Elite is more comfortable than the ex-plod.

Both on ~180k miles too.

My 3.2 ex-plod  estate pulled longer gears than my present 2.6.......................I would not say that there is a great difference in outright performance...........but the 3.2 was more relaxed :y

And sounds a thousand times better. :y :y

I have a 2.5 and a 3ltr saloon, ones a 99 mini-facelift the other a 2000 facelift and can safely say general day to day driving theres not much in it

Upto 60 (they are both autos) there is nothing much in it, above that the 3ltr seems to have more grunt and pulls past naughty speeds alot easier.

As for fuel economy, drive both the same they return the same.

If you are planning in getting a pikey palace than i would say go for the extra pull of the 3ltr, if not then buy whatever one comes up that 'ticks' the most boxes, don't worry about the engine size

be aware you sometimes get extra bits on the 3L vs 2.5 even with the same spec. eg 2.5 Elites are often cloth, whereas 3L has std leather.

3.0 Does seem to have a more gravelly exhaust note!

Thanks for the answers everyone.

I reckon on balance it'll have to be... the 3l MV6!

Cheers!

I've had a 2.5 cd which was a lovely car, very happy with it & hope Kate still is. Got  a 3.0 litre now but when i had the 2.5 i asked the same question. The overall answer was, "not much on paper but the 3.0's are just gruntier"
On the way home from buying the Beastie on the A1 following a long line of traffic, i waited for a gap & instead of passing the 2 or 3 cars i would have in the 2.5 i passed the lot, loads more mid range & much longer legs in each gear..Oh & yes they do sound a little bassier than the 2.5's. 8-)
