Which one? Phillips Carin or Siemens Navteq?

Long story, but both my Omegas have the Carin and the Siemens VDO ones fitted.  Siemens is by far the better system, but the Carin does the job well, if a bit tedious entering addresses.

i take it there not touch screen
how do you in put address / post codes

Not touch screen.
Addresses only.
No postcode function.
Also, unlike TomTom and similar, no POI - Points Of Interest - function addition is available.  The preloaded banks/garages etc are all you get.

It is, however, much quicker on pickup compared to TT and, POI apart, is quite good and I like it.

Carin has a control button near handbrake, Siemens has similar button on radio (but can us steering wheel controls with Siemens).

Both have broadly similar capabilities, and both lack postcode entry.

Siemens uses the computer display, carin has its one display near radio. Siemens has option of full colour display which offers a little bit more functionality.

on a pre 98.5 car, there is a really shitty job of wiring the carin loom to car. will also need the simple job of moving tc switch, but you;ll struggle to get a matching TC switch if yours is pre minifacelift

Easy enough to move to switch bank above radio, but a matching button is harder to find.

Are they soft or hard touch ones?
May have a couple of the hard touch ones from my heaps of Vectra spares.

enter post code where you'd initially enter city/road/junction.
It only allows you to enter AB11 2    though and mine has then often not been able to find my street in the area the post code covers.

The picture/speed of response/zoom in to junctions and the routeing algorithm all make the Seimens Sat-Nav great.

The awkwardness of entering data/inability to reroute by ommitting a portion of route/lack of POI's(especially speedcameras)/no postcodes/UK only make it poor.

I do use it, but have a tomtom with the latest software/maps/POI's as well. TT routing algorithm is poor .. it'll send you 30 miles to save 1 minute ... but is more accurate on local roads / addresses ..

So between the two I get where I want .. sensibly  .. :)

(I'l be trying the post code thing tomorrow !!!  Thanks Andy  :) )

For that money I think I would prefer a Tomtom.

Been using my Satnav in the Elite today, it's ok and does the job, but would certainly benefit from postcode access.

Brilliant.

Last weekend the baby was in the back of the car (she's 21 months) and sounded like she was repeating

faster,  faster, die

over and over like some wierd Chuckie doll. :o
