someone set my car on fire this morning
I got a phone call from a nieghbour saying my car was on fire
I ran out with a little fire extingusher and put it out
after the fire brigade checked it out and disconnected the battery they conformed it had been set alight
someone has pushed something down the scuttle
all the shit that falls under the scuttle has not been scorched and other than the horn there is not much in the way of wiring at this point in the car
also its not went through the bulkhead and was very localised fire
the interior is undamaged and the fire brigade says it could be fixed although there is paint damage.
needless to say i am upset but trying to keep myself busy till i calm down
cars are replaceable and i accept that stuff like this can happen however to set fore to a car at 8.45am when you know im about to get in it with my kids to take them to school is shocking and thats what i am angry about.
i have an argument over parking spaced with a nieghbour at the weekend which got quite heated .......

Gits, what is the world coming to >:(
-
:o :o :o :o
Can't see the pictures in work, but that's madness!!!
-
What bloody morons!! >:( Sounds like it might be worth a "quiet" word with the neighbour.
-
I am sorry to hear that mate, what a pathetic and stupid thing to do. Have you called the police yet? Tell them about your dispute with the neighbour it may yield results. Also ask around maybe someone saw something.
-
Sorry to hear the bad news Doog. :-/ :-/ :-*
-
Its a common place for the early Omega's to catch fire, is it a mini facelift?
-
thats wel out of order
hope you are rectified asap
-
Sorry to hear about that mate
-
Bugga, when you have calmed down \i would suggest involving the police, you say the firemen have said it was started on purpose, and if there was an argument with a neighber then its for the police to decide.
-
Gutted for you :'( :'( :'(
But... Before you point the finger of blame somewhere I think you should be careful.
Its a common place for the early Omega's to catch fire
Power sounders have been known to "spontaneously combust" and that is the exact location of your fire :-/ :-/ :-/ I'll have a hunt and see if I can find a thread on it.
Just playing Devil's Advocate here so please don't shoot the messenger :y :y
[edit]
Here you go... Just a few occurrences from a quick search

And the Google search results
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&as_q=power+sounder+fire&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=10&lr=&as_filetype=&ft=i&as_sitesearch=www.omegaowners.com&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=images
So just a friendly warning to be careful if pointing the finger of blame... You'll need to get positive proof of accelerant use as cause of fire.[/edit]

Sorry to hear the Doog, that is bad news although it could obviously have been worse :'( :'(
Is there any obvious party who could be responsible. i.e someone with a grudge? :-? :o :o
-
I reacon its the power sounder thats smoked!
-
Yep, my money is on power sounder too.
It's fed by a puny wire that's fused at 80 amps. When the batteries leak over the board, as mine had, they short the driver circuit for the horn, and the transformer burns out. If you're lucky that's as far as it goes but I can imagine a scenario where it develops further.
If you have a power sounder that doesn't work, pull it out.

Must confess this thread has got me thinking... I knew I'd read about it but it was one of those "It wont happen to me" scenarios... I'm thinking it may be time to rip mine out ::) ::) ::)
-
Not the first pic of an Omega electrical fire that i've seen, although IIRC the minifacelift fault was over by the ECU wiring.
I agree with the power sounder theory though, and IMHO, it would be quite difficult to start an intentional fire there.
Sorry to hear about it though mate. :'(

I'm glad some others have agreed with me... I felt like a total rsole when I put my first reply up as it's not exactly going to make any difference to Ruud... His pride and Joy has still taken a beating :'( :'( :'(

:o me? Luckily my car hasn't caught fire yet :)
Sorry to see your car in such a state Doug :(

No probs mate ;)
I hope I don't have one of those power sounders :-/
-
i don't think somone set light to it, i have seen quite a few Omegas go up in exactly the same place, as mentioned could be the power sounder wiring.

Every Omega has one, drivers side, under the scuttle.
I removed mine, even though its a facelift.

Have you got a factory alarm?
If so, chances are you've got one :y :y
-
I do have a factory alarm but when the alarm goes off, only the lights flash. Will have a look anyway

is this a prob to pre mini face lifts or all face lifts or even all newer ones too :question
-
All with alarm.....
I wont say I have seen loads, this is possibly the 3rd in 10 years having seen thousands of cars.

Alternatively, fit an inline fuse holder with a low value fuse (1 amp should be OK at a guess) into each of the 2 power supplies to the power sounder.

Just got back to this thread
i only went on what the fireman told me
there was very little surrounding the location of the fire and no traces of any fire under the scuttle panel
Doug
-
who and why the hell would someone do that
some heads need to roll mate
>:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

forgot to say
after reconecting the battery checked the car and it starts and runs fine
but the firing is damaged so it looks bleak for the old girl

feel sorry for that..
if you have even a small problem with any neighbour or someone time to install some hidden camera(s).. you may see interesting details..

Yes Cem i agree that a hidden camera is a good idea however i am generaly more direct in my dealings with people and it will be dealt with in my own special way.
before i do that i am going to remove and inspect the power sounder just to be sure it wasnt that i am sure firemen can be wrong too and several people who know there stuff on this forum say that its a possibility it is the power sounder.
just to clarify the firemen who visited this morning said that due to how it had burned it had been burning from the top down (cowling) and not from underneath

Good luck with the investiagtion Doog :y make sure you get a conclusive result before you start knocking heads off shoulders ::)
but as the fireman says if it was burning from top down then does indeed look like some C. U. Next. Thursday. has been playing silly buggers and you'd be quite right in sorting someone out >:(

Check that power sounder! The Astra had a knackered powersounder i had a look at it the other month and noticed the power pack had green battery gunk all over it so i removed it! they are NICAD cells which arent the best rechargable chemistry
Cameras are pointless they can soon be stopped! if a profesional thief etc wants something you have then he will have the tools to disable CCTV which are availible in most good Gadget Shops :y

thats a high probability also :(
as from experience, some neighbours may not like cameras around ..
claiming that you disturb their private life etc.. at the beginning I also
give importance to that but after I understand what is what.. >:(
and why they dont want that.. if you want real proof , make them
hidden..So at the very first catch they will say hi to police.. :y

Is that correct? Every Omega?
I did not think mine had one (GLS)
Can someone verify please?

Usually there's a 'Caution Power Sounder' sticker on the plastic cowling over the radiator when fitted.
-
update
I have been given a crime ref number so unless the fireman has got it very wrong it was set by someone and not the power sounder (which was very intact when i removed and checked it today

for reasons that cant be disclosed on a public forum i wont say how but they deffinatly can i have lots of experiance in this field :y i aint no burglar btw its part of my job
a well known family of travelers from Worcestershire used similar technology to conduct there robberies
but all technology has flaws EMP etc

seems strange that a fire should happen to start in a known fire area on the omega and be deliberate arson. Who would know to start a fire there and try to make it look like an accident?
Also be carefull with where the camera is pointed, if it covers other property without consent you could get grief. Very sorry to hear about this.
