Title: Heart Murmur
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 07 March 2009, 20:52:47
I've been informed by my GP I have a heart murmur. She wants to listen to it again shortly.

Anyone else got one, or know what one is?  :-/

A slight skip in a normal heartbeat.

Apparantly not. I thought that too - but doc told me it was an additional noise from a valve...

Was diagnosed with one approx 10yrs ago while'st taking my HGV medical from then was advised to own doctor who then got me to see specialist at hospital LGI he informed me i would possibly need surgery in 5yrs definatly in 10yrs which is where i'm at today I gradually got out of breath walking up slopes/bikeing etc as it worsened.... so just had the surgery "run of the mill ops to them" in my case i had a lazy or hardening aortic valve which was replaced in January, i feel much better for having it done & do not have the out of breath problem at all...
Thats it in a nutshell :y

I'm led to believe slight numbness & tingling in certain fingers is trapped nerves at top of the spine & or a problem with carpal tunnel in the hand itself. :-/

Dogs can have heart-valvular murmurs too: my Vet. friend explained that the 'normal' heart should make a repeating "Lup-Dup" sound....whilst a heart with a murmur may produces a repeating "Lup-a-Dup".

Sometimes murmurs can be so slight that they are often extremely difficult to hear and diagnose.
IIRC, their presence is not in itself indicative of any disease.

James: this is a time to trust the expert ear and technology of your Doctor and/or Cardiologist. :y

God I was told 10yrs ago & just had a check annually never bothered about it at all, until I was told to get tests every 6mths that was about 18ths ago, suddenly it was  open heart job but dont worry James if a 64 yr old giffer like me comes through ok you should have no probs besides probably will take years to have need to be operated on..I was also told by the heart specialist 8 out of 10 people will have a murmur & dont know it  :y

My little lad had a heart murmur...oh course that worried me sick.

Turns out even something like a cold can cause it,as said before its just a noise and could be all manner of things that are perfectly harmless.

Oh and a week after it was detected it was completely gone. ;)

Doc did say it could be because I was

A) Stressed (which I was)
B) Unwell (I was getting over nasty cold at the time!)

Thanks for the re-assurance mate ;)

i get a pounding in my chest, apparently there is a nerv that runs from the centre of the spine between shoulder blades to the sternum via the arm pit area. I also have a breaked left collar bone/clavical.  If i sit with the clavical out of position my chest pounds. Move my shoulder back and it stops instantly. This has also been reproduced by a heavy cold and chesty coff. I had an ecg and all was well and was then told of the nerve issue, this ties
in with a compressed vertibrae, and possible DDD, degenerative disc disorder.

Sound like a cripple dont I? Not really. 40% of the population have DDD and most dont know. The rest comes down to throwing expensive motorbikes up the road.

Point is it can be several things and not necessarily a valve problem, in my case a nerve issue.(afaik):-)

Did you catch him though? I get numbness sometimes and I've been told by my quack that it's Raynaud's Syndrome (http://www.medic8.com/healthguide/articles/raynauds.html).

According to the BUPA specialist that I consulted with, the nerves running to the fingers through the wrist are in a separated tunnel (carpal) from the tendons. I have damaged my left nerves through playing the Melodeon which means that the little & ring fingers on my left hand are permanently numb. I also play guitar which means that I have to finger on the frets by memory, not feel.
I was told that it could be operated on but there was a 50/50 chance that I could loose all feeling in all fingers so I have elected to leave alone.
