just read MDTM's comment about the GM v Ford engine - so so true, main reason i stuck with vaux (did have 1 xr3i with a CVH and it was a bag'o'shite).

Never liked MkII cav, few friends had the 130s which were popular at time. Handling was not that great from what I remember at the time, suffering from dreadful understeer with the boot down.  I had an Astra GTE at the time, pretty much same engine, but lighter car, much quicker. Shame that handled a million times worse than the cav!

My lodger at the time had her XR3i, that wasn't in the same league - slow, typical escort unpredictable handling.

Nothing I drove around then I thought was good, until I swapped the GTE for the Rover - what it lost in power (was only 1.6) it more than made up for in its ability to do corners and its ability to lose speed.  Trouble was, in true Honda style, had to scream its nuts off to make it go.

Had I had been a bit older at the time, I reckon I would have liked the cav more - I thought at the time that the sri (State Registered Idiot ;)) looked the part (even though they only seemed to be available in red or white!), though like the xr3i a couple of years before it, became the yuppy's car, hence driven by tossers and none had the optional indicators pack fitted - what we now call BMW 3 series man...

Yeah, my first Vx was a 1986 Belmont GLSi with same 1.8 fitted to the sri one, but a longer box.

Hated the bloody thing, only had it 3 months, rather awful. Swore I'd never get another Vauxhall after that, so replaced it with the 2.0 GTE ::)

I had driven a lot of cars from that period - and do you know what did handle - Carlton, the Mk2 Astras were quite poor the Mk2 Cavalier a bit better

Even the 1.3 Ashtrays were not slow, they would rev to almost 8000rpm

2.0 GTe I delivered once was quick but torque steered like buggery, I did not feel safe in it.

Cavaliers were more controllable.

Carltons were very quick top end but took a little while to get there, I did redline a 2.0 in top ;D

astra gte 2.0 wasn't too bad on torque steer, its problem was an utterly shite chassis, just no way to get any power down.

Only car I've ever had banging off the revlimiter in top gear for mile after mile ::)

My first car was a Viva HC then my beloved Mk 2 Cavalier 1.8i CD, white, loved that motor so faithfull, used semi synthetic in it after warranty did over 174k miles on the last MOT before she went garage could not beleive how good nick the engine was, p/x'd it for a mk3 and was still going in the Darlington area after that.

most rliable car i ever had was a d reg 1.6l  cavalier in dark blue, it had 103k when i got it and was 8 year old , i never changed the  oil or plugs and thrashed another 113thou onto it (regularly at 100mph plus! :-[) in 2 years before it went bang, even when the bottom end gave out, i still managed to drive it to the auctions lol  8-)

Only thing i had to do to it was 1 c.v joint and about 4 back boxes?

I haven't read all the posts but as far as I can see only LaserLance is correct. The Cavalier coupe was the nicest looking cavalier made.
This is the best I can find  :-?

Coincidently, SWMBO was looking through photo's of years back & found a picture of me & my coupe! It got written off  :'( OOW 6S ....

Lol
that has just reminded me of what i nearly bought for my 1st car it was orange and £50 .... when we reversed it off the drive to "test drive" it it stalled and wouldnt run again, so we just left it 1/2 on and 1/2 off the guys drive and said "dont matter mate" ;D
I then bought a 1.6 ghia mk2 escort . . . . . turns out it should have been a 1.1 popular :-[
