Have been in and out of the house today, was just walking up the path to the car and got a sudden sharp pain in the back of my left leg at the top of my calf.
Feels like I have been whacked with a baseball bat. Have been limping and in a lot of pain since. Struggling to swing it out of the car . Also noticed when I bend my ankle to lift my foot up it hurts like opps.
I have lost a lot of my musscle in my leg through being laid up for nearly 3 years and suffer a lot with swollen legs and ankles (hence I spend a lot of time laid down with my legs up)
Dont know if I have hurt my muslce or something else. My mate says I might have damaged my ham string, but I am completely dumb when it comes to medical terms and parts that work with my body. Might be a visit from the Doc if no improvement overnight. :-/
-
Is the pain like cramp?
-
I thought the hamstring was near the thigh ?
-
Is the pain like cramp?
A little, but more like the pain I suffer when I have had a cold shoulder.
Dont think about it as it feels ok when dont move, then as soon as it moves then am in pain.

Simple! Don't move :y
Seriously, sounds more nerves than muscular

Just rung NHS Direct, Calls are in a que for nurses getting back and currently taking about an hour.
With what I have explained she has pushed me up the que and they hope to phone me back within 39 mins.

I thought the hamstring was near the thigh ?
Must admit I was thinking the same, but as I mentioned I have no real idea about my parts and where they are.
I just know the basics. Arms, legs, fingers and toes etc. ;D ;D :y

Just Googled Hamstring and it's certainly not that.
I reckon it's a combination of the muscle and maybe the fact it turned a bit chilly this afternoon and it's created a problem similar to when I have suffered from a cold shoulder.

Just had a call from NHS Direct. Got to watch for pains in my legs, chest. Heat build up in legs, monitor my breathing and watchout for coughing stuff up.
Also got to gat Doctor out 1st thing as soon as Surgury opens, or call back if any changes or problems overnight. :-/

Dr Skruntie now. ;D ;D ;D
Plantaris Tendon" Rupture
The patient will come in limping, having suffered a whip-like sting in his calf while stepping off hard on his foot or charging the net during a game of tennis, or similar activity. He may have actually heard or felt a "snap" at the time of injury. The deep calf pain persists and may be accompanied by mild swelling and ecchymosis. Neurovascular function will be intact.
What to do:
* Rule out an Achilles tendon rupture. Test for strength in plantar flexion (can the patient walk on his toes?). Squeeze the Achilles tendon and palpate for a tender deformity that repre sents a torn segment. If pain does not allow active plantar flexion, squeeze the gastrocnemius muscle with the patient kneeling on a chair and look for the normal plantar flexion of the foot. This will be absent with a complete Achilles tendon tear. With any Achilles tendon tear, orthopedic consultation is necessary.
* When an Achilles tendon rupture has been ruled out, provide the patient with elastic support (e.g., ACE, TEDs stocking, Tibigrip) from foot to tibial tuberosity.
* Provide the patient with crutches for several days. Permit weight bearing only as comfort allows.
* Have the patient keep the leg elevated and at rest for the next 24-48 hours, initially applying cold packs, and after 24 hour alternately with heat every few hours.
* An analgesic such as codeine may be helpful initially and heel elevation should be provided for several weeks.
-
I've had that, you need Physio ASAP, took weeks to heal.

You've almost certainly torn the attaching fibres (tendons?) off the bone at the top of your calf muscle. It's usually caused by violent acceleration in tennis/ squash/football but it sounds as if your lack of activity and the cold weather has caused the problem here.
Last time I did it on a squash court it took 4 weeks to recover totally and I didn't dare put it to the test for a further 4 weeks. An osteopath helped me with similar but less incapacitating tennis elbow damage, but that took a couple of weeks also. Worst effect was inability to raise a pint glass to my mouth.
I'm afraid you'll have to rest up, Skruntie. More time to find piccies I suppose. ;)
Hope you get relief soon.
Bill.

Bugger, thats whats I was afraid of. I reckon I did it coming off my front door step, it's got one step higher than the other so it tends to speed you up on its own off the steps.
As it really hurts to bend my ankle (as my foot tilts upwards the pain is from the tension to the back of the calf) I avoided using the stairs last night and ended up spending most of the night on the net.
Dont need to go out much at all, but the times I do have to go out are to keep an eye on builds and other trades during building/conversion which has got annother 2/3 weeks to run its full course. Then its all the decor/carpets and fittings etc. Plus then the plan was to move home in April . . . hopefully. What a time for this happen. :-/
-
There is never a good time to be ill, keep the weight off it and I hope you have a speedy recovery.... :y
You can do the shopping on the net, I did that last week, had it all delivered, why or why have I not done that before??
-
As you will have discovered already you can walk carefully on the flat of your foot without flexing your ankle. But be careful! That puts other muscles/ tendons etc. under strain, and watch your back muscles.
Just takes things very easily.

Hehe, I have been pretty good, started using the delivery service the middle of December and fully agree with you.
-
PS. A walking stick will help and be more convenient than crutches.

Am learning as I go, currently limping/hobbling very slowly when am on my feet which is as little as possible. Just dreading the stairs but will have to tackle them before long. :-/

At least it is left and not right

You'll have to spend more time with your legs in the air ( oh what a picture!).
Seriously tho --- take it easyand don't push the recovery ( I'll ring ahead and cancel your place in the Paris Marathon !) ::)

Would you prefer a picture or live web cam (NOT) ;D ;D ;D
Doctors just been out, Seems its not a tendon issue or I would not be able to move my foot at all she recckens. Have rested the leg since last night, she has confirmed what to keep eye on, and the nurse will be keeping an eye on me for the rest of the week.

Well the Doc said I hadnt damaged a tendon, but never actually came up with a cause for what caused it. The problem subsided over 24/48 hours but left with a little bit of pain as I walk on it.
Been out again today, a bit of a nip in the air and the sodding pain has come back and got the better of me again.
So it seems to be muscle/cold air weather related. Still, could be worse, but bloody inconvienient time wise and sore. Ah well.

Been off the road myself last few weeks, again :'( :'( went out a couple of times to get some exercise and use a walking stick :'( Lost a Stone and a half in 3 weeks, down to 9 stone now, getting a bit scary. Doc's tomorrow.

Hospital app 2 week ago, chest ex ray, not more cancer but loads of fluid on the lung, getting better though :y Worry is work, they are good but at what point do they try and pension me off, and I can't afford that. been thinking worst case scenario though and could live with it, still have my family even if we loose the house, told my Mum we were moving in with them :y

Yes, lost a lung to Cancer a few yeas ago, ongoing monitoring, but seem to get regular chest infections, that I can just about live with as long as the cancer stays away. Not the Man i was, but try to keep going, just get fed up with the amount of times I get sick, for many reasons.
