Are there any law restrictions for tinting the rear side and tailgate windows?
-
Not as far as I am aware --- as long as you stay to the rear of the B pillar anything goes.
-
so if I would tint the rear door windows, rear side windows and tailgate limo black it would be OK?

Yes ---- any reputable tinter will not fit illegal tints anyway. But limo black rear of B pillar will be OK.

the 'reputable tinter' in this case will be me ;)
-
Good luck... I'm lead to believe that fitting tints is not as easy as it looks... :y

Lucky it's an estate -- the rear window of my saloon had the professionals swearing !!!!!
-
I know it's not going to be easy but I will give it a try.
Will post pics regardless the result ;D

Yes, I have better access to the rear window :y
The only thing that worries me a bit is the windows in the rear doors....will it stay on when operating the windows :-/

Depends on whether it`s fitted right :D :D

if it doesn't I'll superglue it :D

You can brick them up if you like, look at an Astra etc van, they have a steel panel there and some bigger vans don't even have windows in the rear doors, that's where your door mirrors come in handy. ;) ;)

Don't they use clear nail varnish? :-/ :-/ :-/

not a clue :-/

My Merc Viano has 30% tint in the front windows (25% tint in the windscreen, i think) anyway its got the max amount of tint you are allowed by law.....and I think the same as all Omega's (except maybe the base models?)
The rear windows are 'diplomat' tint ..... and thats extremely dark....you can only see in the back if theres a light source lighting up the inside.....and it came from Merc like it...factory fitted, so legal :y
Mind you its that dark....it can be a pita in the dark trying to reverse/etc as its difficult to see out....so sometimes have to rely on the parking sensors.....so bear that in mind how dark you go on the tint :y
-

It's by-the-way in this case as you can paint the back windows if you like ala Merc Sprinter van etc but just cos it came from the factory doesn't neccessarily mean it's legal. There was a case in the paper- so it must be true ;) - a while back where the front door windows of a Land Rover something had factory tints that were too dark to be legal.
My car came form the factory being able to do 150 mph ..... but it's not legal ;) ;) ;)

Not according to VOSA -- apparently a number of production models with factory fitted tints--- tinted glass as opposed to films --- fail the regs on front side windows. Unlike films that can easily be removed -- they have to have the glass replaced !!!!!! iirc BMW minis were favourite.
-
I am suprised that FF front windows can fail :o
Surely the manu's know the reg's, but obviously not in some cases :-?
Maybe the vehicles mentioned that did fail were imported vehicles where the country of export have different rules :-/
-
last i looked autobahn stormers had some sort of deal going on privacy glass/tints for members. Just for info.
No idea if its a "good" deal mind you. How much for a prof to do it?
-
I recently spoke to someone who had his saloon professionally done for about £150
-
I bought a 'professional' film off Fleabay for £15. 400 x 76 cm
See how it goes ;)

Land Rover? :-/ ::) :y

One way of doing rear door windows properly is to take the glass out and stick the tints over the whole glass. Otherwise dont try opening them for 3-4 days. Rear window is a bugger. You need to do it either with strips of foil or to heat the foil up as you are working on the edges - possibly both. A VERY good hairdryer should be able to do the job. A LOT of PATIENCE is prerequisitive! Good luck!
-
Thanks DC, the mrs has a supercharged hairdryer ;D
I'm starting next saturday morning and planned the whole day for it :y
-
Let me know how it goes. I have done it a few times, but not on Omega. Have been contemplating it for a long time but tbh am not sure these days I have enough patience to do it properly.
-
will keep you posted

from a pro
"i run a busy tint shop and get asked (and always explain) the same questions everytime, mainly, whats a " legal tint for the front side windows?"
well, to put it simply, there isnt any! the law states that the windscreen and both front side windows must allow 70% light transmission. how they got to this figure im not sure, but if you drive a modern renault, citroen, ford, vw, rover, etc, chances are that your front glass measures 65-68% straight from the showroom!
technically, the dealers broke the law when they sold the car! this is our wonderful government for you, (which is why i dont bother voting) anyway, what it means is that any film applied to front side windows will not be legal-ish.
i say legal-ish because although the police state 70%, the ministry of transport (who are the geezers with the light testing kits) should only issue an advisory if the glass reads 45% or lighter, but then if youre stopped by the feds for tints (usually outside a max power show) it doesnt matter if youve got tints above 45% or not, the law is 70%"
-
iirc -- been a while since I read it -- the way the new regs are worded, it is illegal even to put a CLEAR film on a CLEAR front side window or windscreen ( like those they sometimes use to filter UV or to protect occupants from bits of glass flying in an accident ). However, VOSA did state that, in such a case, it is very unlikely that it willl be detected and therefore won't be enforced in such situations.
In theory though -- if you are stopped for any other reason and you p*ss the officer off AND he/ she notices a clear film you can find yourself on his/ her bad side !!!!
The only tints leagllly permissable on front windows is where the glass itself is tinted -- not a film --- and within the limits for light transmission laid down.
-
Well, today's the day for tinting ;)
I've already seen a potential problem though :-/
The rear side windows have alarm sensors.....anyone know how to get around these?
