Title: Men of Steel
Post by: Debs. on 14 March 2009, 09:24:00
Fascinating historic film of the building the San Francisco to Oakland Bridge....from a time when nations were rightly-proud of their artisan`s achievements.
*I remember reading that many American 'high steel' erectors were indeed Native Americans ("Indians"); whom seemed to have a natural ease working at heights.

Yes............and many men fell to their death Debs......during the building of these iconic bridges /skyscrapers.
I love the Art Deco design of buildings such as The Empire State Building .........but especiallyThe Chrysler Building ......constructed between 1929-1930.

A very dangerous occupation......with many fatalities.....brave men. :y :y :y :y

I seem to recall reading once that whilst building the Empire State Building, not one man was lost which was considered a remarkable feat as some were usually killed on the other projects as you rightly describe Optimist. :y :y

Indeed railway building in this country was a highly dangerous business. When building the 2939 metre long Box Tunnel, Wiltshire, for the Great Western Railway it took 5 years from 1856, £6.5 million and 100 navvies lost their lives. :'( :'(

All building work was a highly dangerous occupation then, with no Health & Safety inspectors around, profit all important, and the life of the working class considered cheap. ::) ::) ::)
