Spend many years for English ..I can talk much better in technical subjects due to schools.. ;D
The first time , I arrived in London it was a big shock..Talking was not problem..Understanding was the headache, as people talk like a machine gun and spell different than I know :-?
My wife comes from the Philippines and she couldn't understand why English people couldn't speak English correctly....took a while for the penny too drop but she meant that most english people (certainly around my way) speak so much slang she couldn't understand them....add a strong accent and she had no chance.
Shes pretty good at picking up languages...speaks Tagalog & visayan & English fluently...Spanish and mandarin when needed.

Broad Yorkshire. Then schoolboy French and German. Spanish of late through necessity. Oh if only I had been able to learn Spanish at school. Worse is I live in a rural area where they speak broad Andalucian which bears little passing resemblance to real spanish. e.g. they don't pronounce any S's. The best is in the bar when they order a whiskey they say "wicky". Always makes me smile.
If your kids have a chance to learn languages then get them signed up for Chinese,Spanish and Indian in that order.

...and you'll never improve your English living north of the border.
Not that I believe you - all the Dutch and Flemish-speaking Belgians speak excellent English from the age of 8 onwards. I suspect this partly to do with a very good language education system, but mainly to do with the fact that home-grown Dutch and Belgian tv is absolutely dire, so the kids watch English and American programs. French-speaking Belgians speak French (sort of).

yes, the language education system in Holland is excellent. The reason for this is that holland has been an exporting country for 100's of years and to succeed in export one has to know their languages :y
Of course we also have dutch programs on the telly, but you are right in saying the majority is english/american. If you look at the top 40 in Holland you will be lucky to find 3 or 4 dutch songs ;D
North of the border is nice though. I've lived in Chesterfield for about a year...totally crap there :D
At least now (after almost 3 years) I still have the feeling I'm on vacation :y
