Title: speeding - i know its wrong but....
Post by: belldarr on 17 March 2009, 21:01:06
Hi All - I think I was well and truly caught bang to rights today - (22 years of driving and not so much as a parking ticket) - I was behind a HGV today on a wide  A-Road, visibility perfect and no side roads, got to a straight bit where you can see a mile ahead and nothing coming - the lorries brake lights come on and he slows from the 56mph I ease off the accelerator and have a peek to see if there's something in front of him but nothing - assume he is slowing to pull into the lay-by about 500 yards away with a burger van in it - so I indicate and accelerate past the lorry and then pull in with no dramas, I get a better look at the burger van now I am closer and it's no burger van - its a speed camera van - DOH!!! I don't know how fast I got up to overtaking but I think it was in excess of the 60mph limit even though I slowed once past the truck - I guess the lorry was trying to warn me by slowing down  :(

Will just wait on the NIP coming through the door now - but just wanted to share my bad day!!

His limit is 40mph on an A road mate, so if he was at 56mph he would have stood on his brakes sharpish to save his own bacon not yours.......

BTW I am a Class 2 HGV driver so know the rules........sadly !!

Bugga.   I went to a mates today, just about to head off into the country side and see's a guy leaning into an Astra from the passenger side wearing a high viz jacket.  As I passed I saw the cop car, then coming towards me I saw the Vosa speed van, so wondering if they were having a clamp down.  On Sunday the same road I saw about 20 superbikes having a "run out" on the same streth.

Maybe they are seeing how they can collect in fines before the end of the financial year. :-/

Lol, and there was me thinking he was doing his best to warn me once I had realised that the man in the lay-by was not doing fry-ups!

I am really peed off as I wasn't even in a hurry, was just enjoying the sunshine and the cruise! :y

Even more of a reason to wait. If he was feeling hungry, he'd have been out of your way in 500 yards.  ;)

those vans usually target cars/trucks a long way away, unlike fixed speed cameras which are close range, how close where you to the van when you passed it?

A very fair point and well made  ;) but I reasoned it made no sense to slow right down with the truck to pull into the lay-by with traffic approaching from behind that may not have been aware of me slowing and  then being rear-ended, with no oncoming traffic and good visibilty overtaking safely seemed to be the best option at that point .......

Hi Tunnie - I was about 300 yards away when i had pulled back in and realised that the van was a speed camera van - it was white transit type with 1 back door open.  I think he must have a pic of me mouthing a swear word or two lol.  I hope he can't lip read or I may also get prosecuted under section 5 of the public order act.

Reminds me of the time about 15 yrs ago when i was in my Dads Rover 416Si and encountered a wide load going along the A60 south of Nottingham towards Loughborough.

I saw the road was clear ahead so gunned it past, must have been doing 85mph.......

Wasnt until i was well past it that I noticed it had a forward Police escort.....!!!!

Saw the Police cars nose go up as he booted it to catch me up and have never felt so embarrassed in all my life.....

Cost me a heavy verbal warning.........!!!!

if the limit is 60 you would need to be in excess of 80 to go to court as i understand it.

You will be banned most likely

They may take into account overtaking for minimum TED but don't expect it.

Might be cheaper to say sorry don't know who is driving and take the 6 points - all they want is the money anyway

well my personal opinion is this go to pepipoo.com and find out what the likely punishment  is going to be,then if worthwhile ask the scamera/dick turpins for the pictures to see if you can determine who was driving, then you can make your choice as to a, bend over and take some or b,keep quite and cop 6 points for not knowing who the driver was.

people  get done for perjury when there is clear evidence to contradict your statement ie saying the wife was driving when the pics quite clearly show a geezer!!

Most of the "talivan" cameras now take 3 pictures ... 2 of the speeding event and then a closeup of the drivers area. This is to forestall all those who used to try it on. When I was done 2 years ago the 3rd picture was easily good enough to identify me as the driver.

As previously said ...  NIP will often have the log in details required to view your picture/speeding details on the secure web site.

The Wiltshire one is here ..

It is very a risky strategy when they have got the NIP to you in 2 days, IMHO. Most people don't have that bad a memory and if it's going to court anyway, they will blow holes in such a defence pretty sharpish.

All you can say is to plead guity, do a bit of brown nosing, say how sorry you are and that during the overtake you were not paying sufficient attention to your speed, etc.

Kevin (who hit the limiter in 3rd during an overtake earlier today - not in the 3.2 though) :-[

That Wiltshire and Swindon safety camera website is interesting,

"A driver detected travelling at 96 mph on the M4 on 22nd June 2008 was fined £1200 with £50 costs and 5 penalty points.

A driver detected travelling at 98 mph on the M4 on 25th June 2008 was fined £850 with £50 costs and was disqualified for 6 months.

A driver detected travelling at 103 mph on the M4 on 2nd August 2008 was fined £700 with £50 costs and 6 penalty points.

A driver detected travelling at 101 mph on the M4 in 5th August 2008 was fined £1,000 with £50 costs and 6 penalty points."

........but sadly its pointing to a fine in the region of £1000+ and 5 points for our guys case.........

Interesting point is that all the above speeding offences were committed on a motorway........our guy was caught doing 95mph on an A road........

It's a bit of a hiding to nothing to claim the measuring equipment is duff from a standpoint of having admitted not having noticed the signs, the camera nor your own speedo despite being 27 MPH above the limit. ;D What a waste of £4500.

Sorry for the late response - i think me posting my alleged speed crashed the whole site last night!! I wanted to add that there is no way that I was travelling this fast, I didn't look at the speedo as I was overtaking the said HGV but I am sure that it was not 95MPH !!! as we all know that is an incredible speed on an A Road and you would certainly know you were doing it.

So I intend to admit the offence - but dispute the speed I was alleged to have reached.  It seems odd that it is exactly 95mph and not 95.6 or 94.7 as this is more normal.

And it is apparently on video not the photo format it used to be (Bedfordshire Police)

How sure are you that you were not going as fast as 95? How fast do you think you were going?

Did they use LTI20-20? This is a range finding kit, and not specifically designed for speed measurement.

If you were not doing 95 don't own up to it, own up to what you were really doing.

Sorry to say Darren that in a 2.5, and especially the 3.0 I had, I can very quickly get to 100 with ease when overtaking as you are concentrating on getting past as quickly and as safely as possible, before shooting back to the speed limit.

In a 3.2 as you have going from 60 to 95 is done all so rapidly and, without looking at your speedo as you state, you would not have known it! ;) ;)

You were just so unlucky to have that van sitting there, so all the best. ;)

I agree with Lizzie, I've been on loads of A roads where 95 mph is very easily done, easpecially in a large powerful car. One of them is on the way south from H21 ..... A702, one bit is well over a mile of dead straight road.
