Think about getting one of these does anyone know if ok
for £199.00 inc Vat
HP ProLiant ML115 G5 Server - 1352 Quad Core / 1GB / NHP SATA 160GB
-
what do you want it for
will it be for downloading
-
No, just for running a home network backup my data so that I do lose it again after drive failure - thought had data backed up :-[
-
ok if it was for download i could of sorted you out :y
-
yep..also you can make raid 5 with 3 sata disks for data protection..
I check technic specs, it supports raid 5 level.. :y
-
Its entry level server, so no proper server management features.
Personally, I'd consider the ML110 G5 which is the equiv Intel based one.
It has a rather shitty disk controller, but think it can take the SMART E200 card, which you then can use decent SAS disks (or SATA if performance not critical).

btw, OOF runs off HP Proliant hardware :y

I cant blame HP for that. I blame that Scandanavian pillock for a piss poor kernel...

Back to the orig query, for ages I have not been a fan of HP, but I will concede that the Proliants are probably best in class.
Check the quickspecs doc for what options you may need though, and what works with that server. For example, if you need fast, reliable storage, P400 controller is ideal, but may not be supported in the DL100 series.
If you want to run a simple Windows server, I suspect everything will just install as expected (probably f6 driver if you are using the onboard raid). If Linux, I think HP only support (and provide drivers for) RedHat, which makes it an expensive option. Solaris x86 - I think the latest version (Solaris 10 U6) has all the drivers needed. ESX won't support the raid disk controller, so an extra card required if you want raid.

Thanks for the advise
But seeing when I looked today that only 4 available from over a 100
yesterday I bought one [ may end up on ebay]. Now got to get
some cure rust so that I can get brain in to action.
See how it goes.
