Keep seeing knackered ones at the tip that might be a nice restoration project. One of these days.
.. and you're right about the noise. My parents' neighbour used to have a particularly badly maintained and rattly one that was used religiously every Sunday morning - a few hours after I rolled in P1$$3d! >:(

we have had a petrol mower for ages, leccy ones just could not cope with the thick grass.
Ours does smoke a bit on startup though ::)

I've got a cheap and nasty Tecumseh rotary job. 80 quid from B&Q in a sale IIRC. Keep expecting it to die but it's been fine. Lob a litre of GM semi synth in it each year and clean the gum out of the float chamber. Sharpen the blade on the bench grinder and off it trundles...

I was given an Atco. Been sat outsided for yonks and a valve had siezed. Flat head removed, valve lub'd up & freed off and it was away! ;) Just needs a bearing sorting on the blade now.

drill some holes in exhaust for extra noise

if its the old briggs & stratton erngine it will run on virtually anything ;)parrafin, white spirit, turps, even seen one run 50/50 kreosote/petrol.

Just been and collected it and its in good nick......been looked after it would appear!
Runs nice, wants a service (a bit of semi me thinks) and the carb will get a clean and reset.
QX cassette will get a service and sharpen to!
