Title: HTC Wizard - can't change SMS settings?

I know there are a few Phone/PDA users on here - hopefully someone can give me a clue here...

Phone in question is a T-Mobile MDA Vario from a recently expired contract, SIM unlocked using the code from T-Mobile, so all legit - now usig my Orange SIM.  Tried to send a text message and just keeps coming up with "phone not ready. Try again in 15 seconds" or similar..says the same with any access to any settings (specifically the SMS ones)...

Anyone got any ideas?  Does it need reflashing with a generic OS (rather than the T-Mobile version)?  If it makes any difference, i've managed to figure out its a G4 version.  Thats about as far as i've got, though...
