Title: Welding and alternators?
Post by: Debs. on 20 March 2009, 19:14:28
I`m going to do some chassis welding repairs on 'Lazarus' (my old Land Rover Seriess III) tomorrow....`trying to recollect: to prevent damage from (possibly) stray, welding current, do I need to remove the battery -ve cable or the alternator +ve cable?

I once had a Mk2 Capri that went into a body shop for repairs including new panels welded on. They did not remove battery or altenator
For several weeks after I got it back it burnt out contact breakers every 2 days then they fitted a resistor in series because there was about 20 volts coming out of the altenator
Eventually the penny dropped that the diodes had been blown during welding & they fitted a new altenator to solve the problem!

You need to remove the battery -ve Debs. But I always just whip the battery off (or at least both terminals) as it takes a whole minute to do.

hi i remove the battery ? and keep earth lead close to welding area sa possible . to keep welding current local . watch for any cables running through chassis  :'( my mistake before ended up with no back lights :-/

For the time it takes to pull the plug off the alternator (just in case) it's worth the effort  :y

I`m about half way through the welding/patching; the area around the O/S rear shackle-mounting is left to complete tomorrow (weather permitting).
I disconnected the battery and alternator; so all should be electrically well when the job is competed. ;)

The old trick was to remove the battery and short the pos and neg leads together.
