Hello all.
Right…. I have a 2.2i petrol Auto model, and the dash light – Car with a spanner through it – has been lighting up more and more as the week has gone on, and I’ve finally given up trying to ignore it and getting more annoyed at it, as there doesn’t seam anything untold to show a problem, other than the damn light ??!!.
Typical, as before I bought the car from the owner, I checked for all the dash lights, and ran the engine of a while and nothing, and now two weeks after becoming the cars new owner, it’s gone and got me in a sneaky pincer manoeuvre !!.
There is no noticeable loss of engine power, or fuel consumption, and at first I thought it was just one of those little gremlins as it wasn’t always on every journey !.
Sometimes it’ll come on after about 5mins with every journey through the day, no matter whether the engines cold or up to temperature, sometimes on a journey it wouldn’t light up at all.
And to be honest I’m a little confused, as in the owners manual (paper version) it states that it could be the immobiliser, or engine electronics, yet on the pdf version I have, it’s saying about the automatic gearbox having a fault !. Yet the gearbox seams fine, though a few times it has hung onto a low gear for longer at lower revs before suddenly changing up – at lower speeds, though that’s rare (at the moment !) thankfully.
I’m not that confident about using the paperclip test, as I don’t want to short anything out, and end up with a then massive problem which is going to cost hundreds to fix instead !!!!.
Does anyone know of a reputable garage (NOT the VAUXHALL Dealers for obvious reasons !), in Telford that has a Tech 2 machine, with someone who knows what their doing with it ?. Or a diagnostic tool I can buy or hire out myself, and read the codes to find out please.
I’ve got a feeling as the cars not flagging any messages on the computer screen, and with the engine not down on power, that it could be the Lamba sensor (CO2 sensor) that’s starting to throw an issy fit, and will eventually cause ‘a malfunction’ at some point ?!.
Any help would be nice please, as its becoming a pain seeing that damn light !!!!!!. >:( >:( >:(
Thanks.

You need to get the codes read.
No DIY way on a 2.2 unfortunately.
Where are you? someone local may be able to read them for you

cant remember the code when mine did the same thing ,but the cause was the catalytic converter. hth

Yes, you need to get the codes read, a cheapo tech2 from fleabay will do that for you....or being in Telford, your not a massive amount of miles away from TheBoy, with real tech2.
Dont think it will be the o2 sensors tho, they would put on the emissions light, piccy of engine symbol.

Thanks for the help.
A work colleague has just phone to say that their friend who owns and runs a garage / recovery service, doesn't have a Tech 2 reader, but maybe able to read the codes on the diagnostic machine they have.
If it isn't going to cost too much then I'll I get them to see if they can see what the problem is. Then maybe I can fix the problem myself.
I know I could go to the Dealers and just pay for the 'check to see', but have this feeling they'll make out its something more expensive than it is, and it'll be simply be a 10min job, and I'm lighter of couple of hundred pounds !!. :o
Hopefully I'll find someone with a Tech 2 more locally.
Yeah, TheBoy, with a real tech2 I think is quite a distance from me, if I've read his profile correct. But thanks for the advice anyhow.
Was hoping to find someone least in the Shropshire area if I could ?.

Just a cheapo tech2, but should be enough to get the codes.
Our 2.2 didnt like generic readers, but cheapo tech2 worked fine.
