Title: Booked my Motorbike theory test - any tips?
Post by: PaulW on 24 March 2009, 20:37:37
Just booked it for next Wednesday, just wondering if anyone has any tips or pointers in regards to it??

I know its pretty much the same as the car one, just with some random mechanical and bike ones thrown in for good measure...

So yeah,,, any tips??

Cheers :)

No idea what's involved, passed mine 27 years ago. A month before the two part test was introduced.

One thing's for sure though, the real learning starts once you pass, and it never stops.

Good luck  :y

Paul, have you got the software?

The question bit is a piece of pi$$, most is just common sense, the new bit for me (as i did car theory test about 7 years ago) is the new Hazard Perception.

You have to click when you see a danger, get some decent software, you have a click limit on each clip, (there are 14 clips)

I found the best technique was to 'batch' click in 5's because i found i actually clicked too early and outside the scoring zone.

The scoring goes 5,4,3,2,1 the closer to the danger, i was always clicking fractionaly before the 5 and the scoring started so i got 0 on a few. best to batch click.

Nothing beats a copy of the software though  :y

No test CD's tunnie, only what I'm reading up online, but as always, its mainly common sense so hopefully I should be ok.  Hazard test looks simple though :)

Just trying to find my CBT cert now, can't find the blasted thing  :-/

I would strongly recommend the software, the stuff i used is the exact same stuff used at the test centre.

I think i still have it someware, i will look tonight for it  :y

You just missed out on the old test, its the new tests now in these 'super centres'

You have to do a maneuvers day, then another seperate road going test. Good luck, do you know what DAS bikes will be used?

I might be getting a big bike this weekend  :-X

Also could very well be going to TT week in the Isle of Man, could be an interesting ride...

Should be nice going through the Peak District.

to be honest, i like the look of the new test than how the old one was, so not really that bothered! plus this way if you pass the manouvers bit and then fail the ride out, you just rebook the 2nd part and dont have to do the other one again! plus there are 2 centers within 20 mins from my home, so its not too bad!

ahhhh the tt... i will make it home to watch this oneday! ultimately ill be living there so no worry about the ferry lol!

Yamaha MT-03

The riding position is very upright, my back is straight (i am 6ft4)

I found i had excellent visability, i was on this bike all day on test day from 9AM to 4:30PM, doing all the test stuff, and afterwards i went off for a burn on my own.

Still wanted more, but had to give the bike back  :'(

I found with others i was hunched over, this was bad for life saver checks as i found them harder, also on the MT cause your upright you can see soooo much more, going through villages at 20mph i could really look around and admire the views. On the XJ6 i borrowed (you see the pics i put on here?) that was not a sports bike but i was hunched over, and i had sholder ache within 30 mins  :'(

They are ER5's

Nice and easy to learn on, i shat my pants first time on those, if your used to a 125, the extra power is amazing at first, but you soon get used to it and want more.

They are fairly upright in position, i was going to get one of those after i passed as i did most of my learning on those. But i personally found the MT much better, it much more ballanced, i found i could lean into the turns much more.

I don't think it's quite what you meant but you do have to lean more in an upright position 'cos the C of G is higher.

Beemers seem to still be popular for an upright riding position but they are expensive and over-rated in my view.

Well i switched straight from the ER5 to the MT and instantly noticed a difference.

Not tried a BMW yet, i loved Long Way Around and the stuff they did, the riding position looks good.

Once i have my own bike i might ride over and blag a test ride on the GS1100  :)

Well I went to a bike place today, had a sit on a few bikes just to get an idea of how the bigger ones feel...

They had the MT03 in, to be honest, it didn't feel that tall!  I was still hunched over a bit, so had a look about.

Sat on a Triumph Tiger, and my god was that comfy!  I know sitting on a bike alone is no real guide on how well it will feel when you ride it, but the seating position was higher, there was more height from the foot rests to the seat, so I wasn't as scrunched up, the handles are higher and set back a bit more so I was completely sat upright too, it just felt so much better to sit on than the MT03!

Still, early days yet, but hopefully come July, I can buy something reasonable :)
