Mervyn King (governor of the Bank of England)made a speech yesterday which although much more subdued in tone, probably holed Gormless below the waterline. It will take a while for him to sink, but in 10 years time when the tv programmes are taking a historic look at Browns premiership, this quiet speech may well be viewed as devastating to Brown as Geoffrey Howes quiet speech in the commons was to Thatcher.
