The handbrake is only expected to hold an already stationary car. :y :y :y

What actually stops it working then? I'm still learning, have moved away from the engine to the rest of the car. :D
And was only pulling on one side thease are the drivers side and it only worked on the passenger side

In correct adjustment I would think. I'm sure that someone (MarksDTM?) has produced a guide.
In all the years I've had Senators & my Omega with the same set-up I've never actually had need to remove a rear disc. :y :y

I have rear discs, pads and handbrake shoes sitting in the garage. Just trying to work up a little "right, let's go for it !"
That's the problem with non-urgent maintainance, they don't get done until they become urgent repairs.

I would imagine that many people have worn down handbrake shoes on Senators, Omegas, and other models using this type of system...
Generally neglected because its a separate brake inside the disc, and appears to be left out of brake maintenance checks...

I would think the opposite ::). They're unlikely to be worn as most are autos and the handbrake is rarely used :y. That's not to say it doesn't need a coat of looking at every now & then. ;) ;) ;)

I agree, they dont wear if working ok.....and for the auto users, use it or loose it (as many can vouch for come MOT time!)

No!!!
Mistake number A1.....never ever 'just adjust the handbrake cable'.....on any car!
You should set the brakes up with the hand brake cable as loose as possible as it plays little or no part in the brake operation.
You only adjust the cable to get the right height when on and slack (yes it must be slack) when off after the brakes are set and adjusted.
And this is true for ALL cars!
Sorry, its a bug bare of mine and true of almost all mechanics these days who sadly have little or no undestanding of how these things are designed to work!. As a result they just 'tighten the handbrake cable'....and then you get excess wear, poor operation, seizing.....and longer pedals on some cars to!

I must have been one of the fortunate one's who have a decent independant Vx garage to service my car.
I complained about having too much travel in my handbrake. They said we have stripped down you handbrake shoes cleaned readjusted and sorted the handbrake. They told me it's was no good just adjusting the cable, it needs doing properly.

That's a comment that applies to the handbrake on a Hyundai Lantra! :-? Sh1te set up, involving cams to use the pads as the handbrake as well as the foot brake. :y :y :y

That is also something of a myth with modern cables. The stretch would result in 1-2 extra clicks tops and would just result in a slightly higher lever......not poor brakes :y
And either way, before adjusting any slack (because there should still be some), the brakes should be serviced and setup.

yeah a service of brakes are needed as course of a service schedule but also are they not auto adustors on the rears like most modern cars?

All back together now. Took everything apart, cleaned up the actuating lever reassembled carefully and now it has a good hold on both sides :y
