Title: Merlin V12 Cars
Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 01 April 2009, 12:58:15
Further to Skruntie's recent thread I have found a Rover with a V12 shoe horned into it!

http://www.ppcmag.co.uk/projectcardetail.asp?id=4

Imagine getting to the rear of that engine for servicing!! :o :o :o

.........and anyone interested in a great restoration project??:

Hope the cam cover gaskets are a bit more reliable than on an Omega! Look at all the bolts that have to come off! :o

Indeed Kevin, and just imagine the oil loss if the gaskets failed! :o :o

Still at least these engines didn't have all the ruddy sensors that our miggies have! ::) ::) :D :D ;)

IIRC in most configurations the oil tank capacity was about the same as an Omega's fuel tank capacity so a little weeping from the cam covers was probably no issue - until it caught fire. :o

Yep every airman's fear!! :o :o

At least they didn't have the fuel floating around in the cockpit which I understand the ME109's had! :o :o ::)

A fantastic sounding engine without a doubt, although I must admit I did nearly void myself when I heard this take off at Farnborough last year:  ;D

Normally air cooled engines do nothing for me, but when you have 72 cylinders all at full chat... ::)

One turned up at the local airfield a few years ago. I stood at the wing tip when it started up and watched about 1/2 a litre of avgas get chucked out of the exhaust stubs as it was cranking, light up when it fired, and then get blown out by the propwash before it could do any damage.  :o

That might be helped by the fact it says that no the side of the aircraft. ::) ::)
I can't get technical about planes, but that is a very evocative photograph... :y

No Mike it is more than that; I remember things in a photographic way, and I distinctly recall that logo and the tailplane insignia. :D ;)
