Hi
Getting hassle of the wife to get rid of my V6 for something more economical. However i don't want to get anything else if its not an omega. Was wondering how economical a diesel omega is compared with my V6. Have looked at the official figures but even the figures for mine are rather optimistic. Also are the diesel versions any good ??
thanks for any info

Depends. On a run, the 2.5TDs aren't too bad. Around town, poor MPG, esp in auto. 2.2DTi are all manual, but still are disappointing around town.
Saying that, a V6 isn't ideal in urban traffic either!
-
as TB says a diesel likes a drink around town but then so do most cars, mine is an auto & chipped & on a run its great on the juice, i would quote you figures from the mid but there are conflicting evidence as to how accurate it is ;)

LPG Conversion :y

Am I dreaming hoping that the Diesel Auto im getting tomorrow will do more than 20mpg in town then?
The 3L Auto does about 16-17mpg now its somehow fixed itself! :o

You should see about 21-22mpg

excuse my lack of knowledge but i am assuming that the only benefit to LPG conversion is the reduced fuel cost rather than better fuel economy??
thanks

Based on your 3l auto mpg, I'd suggest the TD should be low 20s.
Chipping in my case improved real (not MID) consumption by around 10-12% I reckon. With my chip, I reckon MID overreads consumption in the order of 15% (My MID was dead accurate with standard chip)

Correct. LPG actually increases consumption by around 10% (sure one of the LPGers could confirm percentage)

20mpg at 50p/l = 40mpg at £1/l
Reduced fuel cost is as good as better economy

About right, but isn't it final cost per mile the important bit

About 11p a mile in my case. :y
.. or, to put it another way, less than my 1.8 8v Renault Laguna used to cost to run 2 1/2 years ago. The omega has more than twice the power, an auto gearbox, air con, and isn't "gay wheel drive". :y

Why did you buy the Laguna then?

Why did you buy the Laguna then?
It was available from a mate cheap, looked after, with not too many miles exactly when by Over 214 decided it was all "Over".
It was a reasonable car actually. Kept it for 100k miles. A lot longer than I expected to, and there was plenty of life left in it when I sold it TBH.

All engines actualy burn a "mass" of fuel (by weight) rather than a volume ... but petrol and LGP are sold by volume (litres). As LPG weighs less than petrol you get less mass (Kgs) per litre than Petrol, by about 11%.
This causes the miles/litre (or mpg for the older members) to be greater on LPG than on petrol, but if you did it on miles/kilo they would be identical.
As LPG is about 1/2 the cost of petrol, but you get slightly less mpg, the savings are about 35%.
If you are really bored I can supply accurate figures for the past 10 months, covering some 10565 miles ... yes I'm that sad i've run a spreadsheet since the conversion.
My savings in that time, which includes a good deal of caravan towing, as well as motoring in France where LPG is relatively expensive, are running at 35.28%
Petrol costs (estimated) per mile = 23.09 p
LPG costs (actual) per mile = 14.94 p
These are all for the 3.2 engine of course, driven like I stole it .. :)

Sounds like a good buy then :y

Yes. The Mk1 was OK IMHO. Trim was a bit "tupperware" but they were solid cars. It would have been a different story had it been a Mk. 2 Laguna I suspect.
Thinking about it, the engine was only a few K old when I got it due to the DPO not realising it wasn't amphibious! ;D
Thought about LPG'ing it when I first got it but didn't. Wish I had now. Kept it for 8 years and could have saved a fortune. :-[

Back to the matter of mpg of Omegas my 2.2dti was doing 42mpg on a run and 37 round town till I put new tyres on and had it (un)tracked - now it does around 38 on a run and 33 round town - still cheaper to run than a petrol and not that much slower - most economical cruising speed is a touch over 70!!!!
-
My 2.5TD Estate miggy, does arround 37 in London and arround 40 to nearly 50 on a run.
Manual though, think it would make a big difference if it was an Auto in town?

Yup, gotta agree. That's what mine does too :y :y Though slightly more on a run down the motorway at between 80-90 :)
Late forties are available at lower speeds ;)

Mine's damn well-maintained, chipped and has a manual 'box.
It (accurately) returns 33mpg no matter how it's driven.
Given the Valleys terrain here, I'm quite content with this figure, especially as it's no small car. Auto-boxed tractors are, in my experience, bloody dreadful fuel guzzlers.
I reckon that your best option diesel-wise, is a chipped manual 'boxed 2.5TD.

Got to agree with our man here - best combo by far. Even running on Tesco's watered down diseasel I can still drag over 45mpg happily on a run and about 35 in town. If you get too excited it will hurt though, my last tank averaged 24mpg but it was great fun :P

and a good excuse is that you get double points at the minute ;D ;D

Just picked up a diesel omega (2.5td auto with 188k on the clock :o)
And did 35 miles between 55-70 mph, and the average was 50mpg exactly (taken from the mid screen). Until it spat its teddy out, and I had to call AA! (100 miles back home on back of the truck!)
stupid pissing thing! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Well I get 33mpg (calculated because I'm in the cheap seats & do not have a MID) & it's an Auto with 147K on the clock, once hydrolocked, hauls huge weights over long distances & runs on Sainsburys diesel (try something different!). Your point? :P

think laterally. Keep the mig, get rid of the wife for something cheaper.
Seriously: a manual will save you more in urban environment if you drive like grandad. I get close to 30mpg from mine. Which is not too far from an average focus in town. The difference is when you get outside of town and open the taps...
