I have a hp pavilion ze4800 laptop that my mrs bought for me 3 years ago (£500). Instead of shelling out for a new one i want to know if i can add memory to it as its only a 256mb ram and i need at least 1gb. Is this possible and how much do you reckon that would cost me?

Not much, flip it over, undo the Ram Door and see whats what.

Not sure what memory actually goes in it.
I don't think that's a ddr2 (it's a bit old laptop so the old memory will cost a little more than for new ones).
And probably you cannot expand the memory beyond 1 or 2 Gb.
Why do you need at least 1 Gb??
Explain it a little and I'll probably be able to be a little bit more helpfull

Loads of different items on ebay try 200232539052 for memory
-
Have a look at this link http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.memorySearch&model_id=-5003
it tells you what memory you need - your computer will only take 1gb of memory so you might need to fit it in 2 512mb chips - try Spot-On computers in Manchester (mail order on the net - check them on Google) but shouldn't be much more than £10 per chip
-
Yep I checked it and your Laptop supports only old SDRAM.
Whatever you need the 1gb (Vista or something similar) it's just a waste of money because the CPU of the laptop is let's say barely ok but all the rest is fit for scrap if you plan to run anything that needs a fair bit of memory, hdd speed or vga usage

I'd recommend crucial for memory.
But at 3yrs old, its tired, and at the end of its life...
(says TheBoy who's Tech2 laptop is about to have its 9th Birthday, and no matter how he tries, it won't die)

Have a bit of fun and bung Linux on it!
Wife's DEll lappy (2yrs old) has just packed up-AC adapter goes out when plugged in. Output measured 35 volts whenI tested it-instead of 19.5!
When I contacted DEll's (cosmopolitan) Helpdesk I was assured that it needed a new 'Mainboard' at a cost of £185 +vat OR if I took out a new 2yr warranty for£150 they would knock 10% of that price! I think not >:(

Hasn't got the memory to run graphical Linux. So unless you are a command line junkie, stick to XP with that little RAM.

Older laptops tend to last a lot longer than new stuff. I have just sold an Advent 7015 (P4-2.80Ghz) for a reasonable amount, still working well. My son's DV9000 just back from HP after getting a replacement motherboard fitted (Nvidia problems ) has died with the same problem after 4 months :'( :'( :'(

Thanks for your comments and advice guys. Think i'll bin it and get a new one! :-?
-
will take 1G, and cost approx £65, plus the cost of an antistatic strap (don't attempt without, you WILL shag the memory (though think you've probably got away with it for a few months)).

Don't even go there. At best, you may get an honest buyer and around £100. More likely you'll get scammed, and end up with no laptop and no money (and, yes, the scammers are clever enough to get the item and their money back (which Paypal etc will take back off you whether you have removed the money from your Paypal account or not, and are perfectly entitled to)

As long as your caerfull then Ebay is fine...check the buyers feedback and that the address is verfied if they pay via paypal.
Doubt you would get much on there....£50/£70 maybe minus fee"s.

Still leaves too many loopholes.
I'd avaoid egay for high value electronic items.
