Title: Welcoming New Members
Post by: HolyCount on 07 April 2009, 08:46:42
This has been mentioned before, a while back, but is becoming a problem again ...... can members please refrain from welcoming 3 or 4 pages of newcomers at a time.

This often results in a newbies first post being relegated to page 4 and subsequently missed.

We need to welcome more women newbies.
There only appears to be 3 regular lady OOfers.
Lizzie,Debs and myself. :-/ :-/ :-/ :-* :-* :-*

At what point is acceptable to start welcoming new members ?
I mean if I have say 1 post is it acceptable to start welcoming people, or should you have a certain number of posts before doing this ?

I have just welcomed a new member, my first I believe, as I think we
may have something in common.

Not trying to cause an argument, just asking if there is a kind of protocol with this sort of thing.

The only rule is dont welcome anybody who started the post over a week ago!

I feel anyone can welcome.

Best done oldest 1st, so new newbies stay at the top

also not going back too far.

Personally I only welcome if under 15 welcomes already done.

Yes Dusty, where are the others?? :-? :-?

Come on ladies, join in!  Usually no-one bites apart from in jest.

Nothing to be frightened of though as we all have something worthwhile to say! :D :D :D ;)

......and yes HC I am noticing how often some very recent Newbies are missing out on a good welcome because some member wants to welcome everyone over the last week in one go!! ::) ::) ::) ::)

It's the only way to become an Omega god isn't it?

I was going to write a perl script to welcome people.

What about if some members do not go on to the forum on a regular basis and when they do come on they may like to look at anyone that has recently joined and would like to say hello? I myself don't come on here that often so when I look through to see whats new I see newbies and like to say hello.

That's your opinion HE - the reason I welcome newbies is because for some joining a forum can be daunting and a warm welcome helps!

Those that come and go for no reason wil do so anyway.

Maybe admin should arrange it so the posts in the welcome section do not count towards a post count - then we will see who the real welcomers are and who are just after the post count!

Well , got to hold my hands up , I didn't read the forum rules and was sitting here saying hi to all the newbie's. I can assure you I have nothing to sell, I was out again yesterday and today trying to get the old girl even better looking. I can also assure you I was not doing it to get posting numbers, however I can see how it must have looked , so my sincere appologies to anyone / everyone , it won't happen again. I have found nothing but help and very good advice on here and certainly do not want to rock any boat that we are all in .

Take care

Dave, as the OP I want to clarify: I was not referring to any attempt at increasing post count. What was bothering me was that a couple of brand new members introductory posts had become buried behind all the "older" newbies and they might have gone totally unwelcomed. I know from experience that a warm welcome is appreciated and the newbie section is often the first real contact the poster has with the forum.

Paul, If you start with the oldest newbie first - up to a week I think is the rule - then it won't be a problem, because your last welcome will be to the newest newbie.. :y

havent been in there for ages, cant be arsed after, as alexandjen said, got pulled up for it or "reminded" probably in my case.

But as then and still now i dont see a massive issue tbh.(dont see it as i havent been in there, yes i know) given how any forum works the busyer it is the quicker a post will drop down, as a newbie i never "expected" anything or was too concerned if i was welcomed or not really. And given the post count of welcomers they will always feel loved and invited in.

What i did find very disappointing when i joined, when posted a problem in general help, no tinker replyed, i bumped it again and still nothing. To the point on the third bump(iirc might be wrong) that Mr dtm apologised(but still didnt offer advise).

I know now that i posted well before peak time and it just got missed, this happened recently with forestsfinest(an extreme case i know) but because of this i now check, when possible, the next couple of pages for no replys and often find them on pages 3 and 4.

Admin will know better than i, but personally i feel this is a far bigger upset, esp as it alwlays seems to happen to newbies. Forum rules say( i did read that bit) dont bump your own post to keep it at the top.
Dont know, maybe its just me. ?

Admin will know better than i, but personally i feel this is a far bigger upset, esp as it alwlays seems to happen to newbies. Forum rules say( i did read that bit) dont bump your own post to keep it at the top.
Dont know, maybe its just me. ?

I actually "bumped" Forest's to get it back up there  ::). I know "rules is rules" but don't see too much of a prob if the OP bumps due to non-response.

I know you did HC, and rightly so. And yes i agree re bumping.

Somebody/we need to check the lower pages as well imho.

And as with any rule there is always an exception.
Not digging at Mark by the way. Just re read.

Just to raise a point I was very apprehensive about joining the forum probably because I've never joined one before and didn't know what to expect but did it anyway and was made to feel most welcome which went a long way to me warming to the site "and you lot" so I have welcomed a few newbies myself as a sort of 'pay back' in the hope that other newbies also feel welcomed and are not made to feel 'inferior' as I believe we all have a common interest, so if I've done something wrong or gone against the grain then I apologies.
Cheers
