I have just seen this on the auto trader site..........
1999 VAUXHALL Omega 2.5 V6 (trade)
63,000 miles
S reg (1999)
S reg. 63000 Miles, FSH, all old MOTs, long MOT, fully loaded with all extras, air con, electric seats etc, only problem head gasket gone, bargain. £595
I have just phoned about this car, and the guy says there is oil in the water.... the head gasket went coming up the motorway. I asked if it will drive thinking i would be able to nurse it home, he then said it will drive but i would say you need a tow truck.
If I go and look at this car, how will i know its the head gasket thats gone?.. i have read on here that its very rare for an Omega head gasket to go!!
If not the head gasket what else could it be? Is this an expensive job to do on Omega's?
Is it hard to do? Done V8 Range Rover but the V8's are quite straight forward....

Oil in water = oil cooler, about 1 days work
water in oil - headgasket, about 2/3 days work for DIY

IMO that's not a bargain
£600 for one with a shagged engine, yet £800 would see you get a decent running Elite.....

Not saying i don't believe you but i haven't seen an elite for 800 quid!
Thats why when i saw this one saying the head gasket had gone, and i had read on here somewhere that it is a rare thing for them to go anyway, i might of being getting a bargain if it was a £50 job to fix, plus i would of only offered him £500 cash anyway. ;D

If you can get it for £500 cash, and it's only an oil cooler, you may be on a winner. But don't trust ebay sellers selling cars with problems. eg, I just bough a car that was "running lumpy".... in fact, it's missfiring so badly it won't run!
I would think an oil cooler would be about £200 to fix off top of my head, DIY job.
Look on ebay, plenty of Elites under a grand

yes, id say £90 oil cooler, £20 sealant for new cooler to plate and new bolts, a couple of oil filters, 10 litres of oil, and as much coolant to flush as you can get your hands on....£20-£50 (depending if you have access to trade card prices or not)
Some carb cleaner £10 and so on...
£200 seems a good estimate :y
HOWEVER you do need to considor - do you renew the thermostat at this point, are the pipes re-usable? and what about the radiator condition.....could be another couple of hundred WORST case.
its also a resonable diy job but can can get very very fiddly

Have to do a little homework before i buy anything ;D
I saw an MV6 that is local 1999 auto, 89000 miles, full service history, leather wanted £1650 but i had no clue about them (not much different now) ;D
All i do know is they look the part have plenty of room for the family and seem safe as air bags are everywhere!! oh! and plus they go quite well ;)

Loo-Knee thats expensive for its fault... will cost you about £150 to get it running smoothly i suspect after the millions of coolant flushes that will needed.
My first project car was a 1998 Reflection 2.5 V6 Auto, I bought it for £300 and sold for £750....
As James says £800 would get you a very nice Elite / CDX
The car you saw advertised with its fault, if you buy pay no more than £400 :y

Yes you can but no more than a mile or so, you could buy it... drive around the corner then ring up RAC/AA whoever and say "my car broke down" and let them tow you home ;)

If its been driven in that state (likely) then there is a good chance that some of the rubber parts are going to fail soon. This includes coolant pipes, and the waterpump seal....

Personally i wouldn't drive it another inch, and thats from experience. I made that mistake and have been paying for it ever since. Apart from hours and hours of flushing and two new header tanks. Oil contamination leads to weak water hoses especially the coolant bridge one which failed on mine which then leaked water onto the dis pack which then failed accordingly.
DO NOT DRIVE AN OMEGA WITH A FAILED OIL COOLER

Tim, a good tip is to run the coolant with bleach in it. Not too much and for gods sakes not long, just enough to get it hot and allow the bleach to break down the oil..... should come out a treat then. You must flush it well with water afterwards though...

My neighbour, who used to work in automotive chemical industry, said put a little screenwash in the coolant on the project car - that helped shift a load of oil...
