Title: steam railway books (really old)
Post by: nick v6 on 21 April 2009, 17:24:09
getting the airbeds out the loft today i found a box that was in from previous owners and inside was a pile of magazines on steam railways
all that have had the front cover's dated and signed
the dates are 1988 on most mags and there is 1 mag from 1979

all these mags are in perfect condition just wondering if anyone knew how i could find out about the signitures that are on the covers on the main photo of the steam train

Are they "Steam Railway" or "Steam World" magazines?

What names are the signatures of?

Whatever the answers there is always a lot of interest in railway publications, although I and my ex would have bought these first time round! :D :D ;)

Trouble is I do not recognise the signature.

The point is that both front covers have the same signature, but the subject matter is very different, with WD 2-10-0 600 Gordon on the Severn Valley Railway, and three Gresly A4's 4-6-2 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, 60022 Mallard and 60019 Bittern, but mascarading as 2509 Silver Link assembled at York in 1988.

It could therefore be that the signature is of the then editor of this magazine, but that is pure guesswork! ::) ::) ::)

i did notice the signitures where very similar
as i dont no anythingabout trains i thought that they was something to do with maybe the builder of the trians or the owner

No the builder / Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) in both cases, Sir Nigel Gresley and R.A. Riddles are dead.  The owners of all four engines are totally different.

So, I cannot see any other obvious link, but perhaps someone else with some "inside knowledge" of 1988 links to the signatures will know???? :-? :-? :-? :-?

 ;) ;)

Nick, just a thought! :o :o

Could you look inside the front covers and identify the name of the photographer credited with the cover pictures of both editions. ;) ;)

Try these people with a phone call (and I am not trying to be funny!! ::) ::) ;) ;)):

Nick Tozer,  "Railway Books Bought & Sold" 01484 518159  (Huddersfield)

OR

Advertise them in the classified section of Steam Railway , contact Natalie Cole 01733 465815

OR

Just advertise in your local paper, as most areas always have a share of the massive railway enthusiast market.

Hope all goes well Nick! 8-) 8-) ;) ;)
