Got given this camping gas powered bbq, which has come in handy as i shall be off to Holland camping with the lads in the summer, but a bit unsure how it works.
It has a standard rubber pipe to feed the gas, and it has this on the other end...

But, it slots into this, which has a big hole through it, won't the gas just leak out? :-/
Or is that where your supposed to light it? :-[

i take it that clips in
looking at it I would assume the hole is an air mixer hole like you would get on a bunsen burner :y
-
Never had a gas BBQ, but surely you can get instructions off tinternet? It does look a bit lethal. :-X
-
Bloody hell Tunnie, you`ll need to watch your eyebrows with that one!!!! :o :o :o :o :o
Is there not a bit missing? that as said acts like a collar over that hole?
-
I have one exactly the same. There is a gas jet in the end of the brass bit (fuel injector). The hole is to draw air into the stream of gas to form a combustible mixture (throttle body). I'd be surprised if it didn't have a piezo ignition device on it (spark plug) but if not, light the gas at the edge of the burner not at the little hole, and ensure that the flame travels the whole way round. Great bits of kit, BTW.

Cheers Kevin, just double checking you mean the burner inside the bbq (bit where the heat is usually ;D :-[)
There is no spark plug, or starting device, i assumed thats what it did, but i thought the gas would just escape through that hole, and not travel into the burner?

Only way to bbq, quickly. We have a quite big one at the Caravan I plumbed it into the caravan gas supply save faffing on with bottles.. ;D ;D ;D

Grandad was having a chuck out and i got it 8-)
Will be usefull, i used disposable BBQ's from tesco last time, great fun putting ligher fluid on them when they have gone out ::) ;D
But they don't last very long, and with the 3 of us, we tend to eat a lot so a potentially unlimited burger supply gets the thumbs up! :y
-
Yep. The edge of the burner (bit that gets hot). ;)
No gas leaks out of the hole because as it exits the jet at high speed it creates a slight vacuum that draws in air to the mix. Bit like a carburettor but the fuel draws the air in rather than vice versa.

Drop it it off at Rufforth next weekend as you drive passed to the Yorkshire Dales ;) ;). It'll come in handy for bacon butties for breakfasts! :y :y :y

After you light it tunnie......cover the air holes up with thumb and finger (it looks likes theres two holes, both sides of the pipe)....you will see the blue flame turn yellow......yellow flame is cold heat, no good, blue flame has the heat :y
Is there a grill that goes over the burner that coals sit on?

I was looking at that brass bit with interest, but thanks Kev, all is now clear, think i shall light it up tomorrow 8-)
You can post anything here :)

Ahh ok, it turns yellow due to lack of oxygen? and its just burning gas otherwise?
yes there is a rack thing that sits above it, and then a metal grill above that.
I wonder if its best to buy coal here, or out in Holland :-/

Correct :y no oxygen and yellow flame, gas and oxygen = blue flame
If it didnt come will coals, you need artificial coals tunnie, not real ones :y You dont want them to burn ;D Just glow red and evenly distrubute the heat from the burner :y

OoOoO!
Can you tell i don't normally cook stuff? ;D
Are artificial coals easy to source?

Ah, it's not the same as mine then. Mine just has a flat metal plate on top. More of a griddle than a barbie I suppose. Does the best bacon butties ever. Pretty good fried bread too.

Looking forward to trying it, do you usually cook with the lid on? To keep the heat in?

Most places that sell gas bbq's should sell the artificial coals seperately as well, they aint usually cheap, but you only need to buy them once :y
They need to completely cover the grill, just one coal high, if you see what i mean, measure the size of the grill before you go shopping, so then decent shop keeper will know how many you need, or it may even say on packets what size grill they cover :y
Lid closed is usually just for heating up, lid open for cooking, except when maybe cooking chicken legs/etc, then its v low heat and lid closed......but i find it easier to easier to cook chicken in the oven first and just brown/burn the skin on the bbq :y
-
Looking at the pics again, i would say that bbq has never been used, the burner is to clean, before you buy coals, i would ask your grandad if he has a bag of coals for it, it would of come with them originally :y
-
Or Lava Rock
-
Chucked one of these out, as like op was spooked by holes inthe pipes the gas travelled along, and used it in the wind one day ........ flames coming out of said holes put me off for life :-? :o :o
