Title: Internet security
Post by: iainb on 26 April 2009, 22:02:56
Just a question about above subject as it seems consume some much processor power.
I need to reduce the about of resource's used by my PC and have come across this
http://www.yoggie.com/pico-personal
I am an avid flight simmer and use microsoft flight sim x but its very memory hungry and cant afford to upgrade my pc at the moment.
So do you guys think this could be an answer or is it snake oil again ?
Cheers Iain

in MY OPINION (just thought i would state that as im not an expert etc)... if you are running Vista, downgrade back to XP with SP3... Vista uses up like 2-3 times the amount of resources of its extra security features and other more pointless things like the Sidebar... better yet, wait for Windows 7 to come out... ive beta tested it and so far it seem good... its XP but with the Vista look (as in its not heavy on resources but looks more modernised)

dont knock vista its actually gives users a hell of alot more control over previous ms builds

vistas networking tc/ip stack is far superior to XP's in standard guise vista also has other good options like assigning tasks to a certain processor something i could never get XP to do!

vista is ok if you turn windows Aero off it simply isnt needed!

Part right, part wrong.  XP now really should be junked. Its 8yrs old (and that is an awful long time in software).

Vista is an excellent OS. By default, it is heavy on some resources, particularly memory. Turn off the Aero, and get rid of the sidebar, and it becomes less resource intensive (still more than XP).  Do not be tempted to turn of UAC like many magazines and other uninformed 'specialists' tell you - it adds a vitally important layer to security that was always missing from NT based Windows (non NT based Windows never had security ;D), seeing as everyone seems to think they always need to run as Administrator, else its a smear on their penile performance.

Windows 7 is nothing like XP, thank god. Windows 7 is most definately Vista, just the next evolution.  Certainly the betas have shown that the Out-of-box defaults are better tuned, and Microsoft have put a lot of work into startup speed - the big killer with Vista.

Get a Mac!

I use Windows all day at work, fairly decent spec machine, with 3x 19" Monitors.

But my 3 year old Intel chipped Mac mini wins hands down! Much nicer to use, Safari 4 Beta is a little gem, i find Spaces huge benefit working from home, its basically having up to 16 virtual monitors and its instant to switch between them.

I find i can actually work faster on a mac...

In your opinion ;)

Some people prefer KDE or Gnome. Some sad souls like Sun's Java desktop, or worse still, CDE...   ...its whatever suits you...
