My in laws are struggling with age to open and close the garage door - I am thinking of installing a remote operating system for them. Before I go out and splash the cash - does anyone have any views on doing this more cost effectively than £4-500.
The door they have has a canopy system which is the most difficult to convert I understand.

You need a Cardale Autoglide. Excellent bit of kit. Just replaces one of the side runners. Fitted mine in about an hour and 4 1/2 years later it's still doing a great job with the occasional tweak. Much better than trying to bodge a ceiling mounted opener onto a canopy door.

Or convert to other type - luckily the builder of my house put on this type, so a £150 opener from Screwfix has been faultless, even when that hooligan Omegatoy attacked it with my angle grinder ;D
The arm things for canopy ones are bloody awful!

Thanks - the Cardale is £400 though. Will give it some thought.

Ah, sorry. Misread your post and thought the budget was 4-500. :-[
As said, trying to bodge a ceiling mounted opener onto it will be a waste of time. Perhaps a cheap up-and-over door and opener would come in cheaper if fitted on a DIY basis. :-/

OI,
It was very carefully removed from the system, very gently bent to shape, then merely caressed with the angle grinder to ensure a proper fit in the depths of you engine, it was then lovingy returned to original shape, and carefully bolted back into the garage opening system, merely requiring a lick of paint and no one would ever have know it was a lucky piece of metal that had had two distinct and seperate lives, one extremely boring just pulling the door open and one that was very very excitng where it became a precsion tool which cost a fortune!!! ;D

When I read the thread title I imagined "Electric Garage Doors"; as in: "Electric Fence".......now, that would be secure! ;D

Maybe Omegatoy could go round to my in-laws gaff, practice his skills, and then I can get an insurance claim through for vandalism - with the door damaged this could be an open and shut case.
