HI , I saw TB's post about moving a small box from somewhere to somewhere and thought it was time to mention the following. I run a small courier firm that operates anywhere in UK and europe. I also belong to a network called Courier Exchange ( CX ) which operates in the same way , basically when ever I have a van leaving Cambridge to say Manchester delivering at 11 am , I post on the CX my details , ie time of delivery , van size etc and any jobs that are posted by other CX members within a 15 mile radius of Manchester are text to my phone. Now bearing in mind I have already made my money by driving up to Manchester anything which is coming back down South thats in my " corridor" which I could deliver easily on my way home is adding to my profit on the van , and if for example a job came up from Manchester to London , the normal price would be say £200 then I am happy to bid £60 as I am going that way anyway , so the seller gets a result and so do I . There are 5000 owner drivers on the forum with vehicles ranging from car - 4.2 m vans. I am happy to post peoples dleivery needs on the forum for them HOWEVER please remember if you want something delivered the same day at say 1pm you will pay full whack , BUT if you had something that a courier could pick up and deliver the next day or even the day after you would pay a lot less than a parcel network for larger bits ie doors , gearboxes , engines ( they would all need to be relatively claen and empty of oil though! as most of the drivers are proud of their vans and would not be happy with oil spillages :-/. All jobs would have to be COD obviously ! Just a thought that I would like to throw into the melting pot. What do you lot think ?
Take care

Sorry I need to add that I am not making the money out of this , I would just be the middle man posting the job's on CX , I would then pass on your mobile address etc to the driver and you would then deal with them direct. I also need to add that all the members have to be fully insured ( twe have to send all ours docs in annually ) so this is not a mickey mouse operation.
Thanks

I ran my own sameday business based in Northampton a few years ago called Compass Sameday and used CX, which was in its infancy really then.......
I found the site very very helpful, got loads of work from it and I think it is a great idea djm to post your offer to help people out via CX.....
Hope your business is doing ok in the current climate mate, I sold mine to a larger rival and moved to be closer to family.

Thanks Loo Knee , I thought as I watched it fall down the chat pages unanswered someone though I may be having a laugh :-/. As I have accsess to a courier site which has small / jumbo vans returning from all over the UK , to all over the UK , I know from years of using the site that it works very well , and more important it's cheap. If for example you bought a door from Loo Knee ,( Stoke ) and you lived in London say , that could be arranged through the site easily and cheaply. The reason it gets expensive is when people say " oh I need it here for 11am tommorrow " then someone has got to drive a dedicated van from a to b , and charge accordingly, but if I post on the CX site I have a backload from Stoke to London ( part load for a big van ) then someone is bound to be passing through Stoke and either heading through London on their way home , or they may live in London. You get a good rate and a good service and the courier earns a few bob as a backload to help pay for a bit of fuel .
Hope this helps

Hi HC whats a sticky please ?
Dave
Admins can "label" the post so that it stays at the top and doesn't dissappear after a few days, Dave.
-
Ah I see , well I guess thats up to the admin ? Thanks for explaining HC

I am probably going to use this service next week, so will report back on how it went :y

Hi Dave,
Does this service extend to Ireland at all? I am looking at bringing across a set of leather seats from the UK and because of the size, I am getting very expensive quotes as you can imagine. I would be willing to wait a few weeks for delivery as I would be in no hurry.
Thanks,
Richard

Where abouts is the collection please Richard?

I would be collecting from Dave Marshall who is based around Swindon/Cirencester according to his profile. Would be looking to deliver to County Tipperary in Southern Ireland but would be willing to drive a few hours myself to collect if need be.

I am taking advantage of this service. I got a turning lathe way down on the south coast, and contacted Dave re getting this shipped up. I also sourced a nice metal table to put it on at Milton Keynes. The courier has picked up the lathe already and should be delivering both on Friday for £70. Thats not bad, it would cost me at least that in petrol if I went to pick it up, plus at least 8hrs driving.
It has been good so far, lots of phone calls to keep me informed, however one problem arose. The chap organising it is called Dave, the courier is called Dave, and the chap selling the lathe is also called .......... Dave. So the phone goes and the chap says " Hi its Dave here" . But which one :-X ;D ;D ;D ;D
This looks as if it could be handy for shipping bits around, a lot cheaper than other couriers.

Well, I got home on Friday to find the lathe and table delivered nice and safely. No damage, nothing missing, and I didn't have to do anything. The driver was helpful in sorting out a time to deliver, he reorganised his day a bit to shift my delivery to the end of his deliveries.
Pretty good service and a good price :y :y :y
