Title: 2-stroke diesel panic.....

Just one cylinder causing all that panic!.....Evidently, the crankcase was overfilled and the oil therein became the fuel for the 'runaway'.
My gaze was transfixed by that flywheel getting ever closer to that propane cylinder. :o

Story:
This video illustrates what happens when these two stroke semidiesels run out due to too much oil in the crankcase. With my left hand, I block the injection pump, so from that time the engine run on lube oil only, no diesel at all. I have heard lots of stories about this from decades ago but this is the first time, to my knowledge, that it is captured on video. Luckily we had blocked most of the air intake prior to starting and ended at about 600 rpm. Max operating rpm is 425-450. With full air supply, I would guess this engine would reach thousands of rpm and I could only guess what would have happened then...

The electric glowplug short circuited so we had to rely on the propane burner which had slightly low temperature. In this startattempt, we used an autogen burner and got the glowplug bright red. The crankcase was, unfortunately, filled with too much oil so the engine was running on its lube oil from the crankcase instead of diesel. Still some trouble with the fuel injection, doesn't feel right when injecting diesel manually.

dont no about the fly wheel getting closer to the cylinder it was rubbing the pipe nicley

looked very dangerous i would have been running for the hills when that started

Exactly the reason why when ever I have staretd a diesel after work I have somebody with a dust sheet next to the intake!

Nasty......but bloody funny!

Here is the starting of the 08 diesel at the weekend at the Ruddington....eventualy it went!

Used that on a diesel generator once and it sounded like it was detonating at about 45 degrees BTDC. :o Terrible knocking sound from my poor (newly rebuilt  :'() engine.

Discovered the trick on that engine is a couple of squirts of engine oil right down the intake tract. Then it goes first time. It's only a tiddler though.

Lol....not a problem for the battery.

What you cant see in the picture is the umbilical from the class 73 thats sat in front of it!

Yes, locos have jump start connections!  ;D

Those locos are developed from a 1935 English Electric design, the basic form was sorted out around WW2 period to the outside frame and no jack shafts.

Yes the standard British Diesel Shunter is a 70 year old design, the actual 08s were built AFAIR 1952-62 so say a 57 year old BR loco!
