Hi fellow OOFers ;D
my question is this,...my 2000 elite has 245x45x17 tyres. tonight a guy i know offered me 4x 225x55x16 tyres, with alloys from his 03 plate omega. its a 2.2 cd i think?....( they are nearly new and the tread on his are loads better than the tread on mine)..... obviously the alloys themselves are different to my elite, which i prefer, but if possible i would run these for a few months.....anyway,could i put these on my car and run them until the tread has gone and then just switch back to my elite alloys and tyres? Thanks in advance... :y :y :y

Yes you could, check that the tyre of the 16" have a fast enough speed rating for your car though.

I suppose you could still use them, but don't crash & make sure your insurance don't find out :-? ...... although I bet a lot of other cars out there have a lower (cheaper) speed rating on than they should have. :y

Speed rating is a max speed rating.
As long as you dont take your car over the max speed rating then you are fine. Seeing as the legal limit is a max of 70 mph, you will always be fine. Even with remoulds (if they are still available), you are still fine up to the legal limit.
Beyond the limit is up to you, but you can always get the ratings by doing a search online. 215/55 zr16 etc
The ZR part is the speed rating if you were not aware.
Hope this helps. :y

No issues, they would'nt even cause a major discrepancy in your speedo rating. :y

GREAT!!!!!!!! 4 tyres with alloys .......£120 sovs. cant be bad!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, sounds good.
I got a deal like this 2 yrs ago.
I needed 3 tyres for the mot, and by chance I was offered a set of facelift cdx wheels with excellent tyres (2 new) for £100.
Cheaper than buying 3 new tyres for mine!
It'd been rude not too! ;)
Just make sure the tyres are all good and the wheels are proper Omega rims.

That's good news then, I'll look for some N rated tyres when I next need them http://www.blackcircles.com/general/speedrating They should be a lot cheaper than the W/Z's mine's supposed to have. I may even go for some dead skinny tyres too, I'm sure they'll be OK as we don't ever drive over 70 mph on the motorway.
All that research that car & tyre manufacturers go to and they could haave saved themselves the time, effort & money. :-?

Reply seems a little bit arsey, imho.
Plus a little contradictory.

I think I may have read on here recently that the rating relates to the weight of the car as well as the maximum possible speed? :-/

I think it might do, but certain sizes are only available in specific speed ratings.
Although I am sure I can be proved wrong. :D

So with regards to the legal standing, I think you will find this site transparent.
As per the safety aspect, It really is up to you, given the info in the posts, I think the question has been answered.
Yes, manufacturers spend plenty on research and development, regardless of this fact, the law is the law, and given these times where budget motoring is key, surely no-one plans to drive around at over 100mph, breaking road traffic and tyre safety laws, not to mention the effect on fuel economy.
So the decision is still yours.

D'you know?
I could'nt find any 'n' rated tyres to fit an Omega sized wheel.
Funny that. :o :-?

Not strictly true - if a manufacturer specifies a speed rating, you must always stick to it or exceed it. Insurnace comapines use any excuse nowadays ;)
-
Also, changing tyre sizes should really be done in conjunction with insurance company, as it may affect the risk.
With both stated sizes being Omega standards though, I think they would be harsh to penalise you...

thanks guys. like i said its a temporary thing anyway,as soon as the tread is gone i will be putting the elite wheels back on. cheers :y :y :y
