Every home in the UK is to be fitted with a 'smart energy meter' to monitor power use and hopefully reduce bills.
The meters are planned to be installed by 2020 under plans announced this morning by the Government.

A needless waste of money, IMHO.

reading on the bbc site.....they will pay for themselves ;D

Apparently they'll save the money they pay to meter readers, so that's OK :y
Unless you're a meter reader ;D

They have to equip 26 million homes, and several million businesses before they realise the full savings from redundant meter readers. In the meantime, look out for price hikes to pay up front for the equipment and the on-going installation costs.
The old pay-for-itself story. Like solar panels. ;) ;D

Like this one:
http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view/80108/Charlie-s-green-lightbulb-costs-taxpayer-72k-per-day/
Official figures have revealed the £4million project at Woking, Surrey, produced only enough electricity in one year to power a single 100-watt lightbulb for just 59 days. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
That’s an electrifying cost of £72,000 per day – funded by taxpayers and energy trusts. >:( >:( >:( >:(

No big issue or cost burden given that 90% of the UK's electrics meters are replaced every 10 years anyway.

OK, I put my hand up and say that now I've investigated the story more, it would appear that there should be no cost to the consumer.
I jumped in too quick. Ever fearful of more Big Brother moves, I guess. :-[ :-[

It is right nowadays to assume the worst of our political masters! Usually, in 99% of cases, your assumption Nick would have been correct! :D :D :y :y :y
