Why oh why do they do it?
I had a trip to Gloucester today & on the my return i was towing a Winch, which meant i was limited to 60mph & i couldn't enter the fast lane. Of course i caught up a middle lane hogger doing any thing between 50-60mph for i lost count of the miles, but she wouldn't pull in, so i had to break the law & enter the fast lane or under take her. It's bad enough towing a 2.5 tonne winch without having some stupid cow making it even harder.
So in the end i checked for plod, floored it & over took her giving her a hand single & horn as i went passed. She still mantained the middle lane for many miles until i lost sight.
If you're one of these people that do this & you read my post, please have some consideration for other's, there's not just YOU on the road.
That's my rant for the day :D

One of the most annoying things on the road!

This has been one of my pet hates for years!! :o :o :o >:( >:( >:( >:(
Before now I have raced up to their rear bumper, then raced past at high speed and, once almost past, signaled and cut right in to lane 1. Sometimes these unfortunate brain cell depleted people get the message and pull over!!
Grrrrrrrrrrrr >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( You have started my ranting Pete! ::) ::) :D ;)
Mind you the worst was on the M5 travelling north towards Gloucester in about 1991 when I came across a Morris Minor being driven at 40 mph in lane 3!! As I sat behind him, trying very hard to get him to move over, I phoned the police.
Eventually it took a traffic car to undertake a massive queue of vehicles, and physically get in front of this chap, breaking him to a halt :o :o :o. We were then waved through on the nearside! 8-) 8-)
-
We do it to irritate you!! ;D ;D ;D

I agree totally!!! I don't tow, or have ever towed so can only imagine how more annoying it must be. Why oh why do people not pay attention? They seem to like to just sit in lane 2 because it's easy...no real effort. I was coming back from cornwall, and this 206 was in lane 3 nothing in lane 2 or 3 for miles. Followed for a good 6 or so miles and then decided had enough and undertook. She was only doing 55 at the very most. If you're making good progress on the vehicle you intend to overtake then fine...if not then use common sense and pull in. All about anticipation and awareness. How some people drive on our roads is a mystery to me.
-
Rightly or wrongly, I never go into lane 3/outside lane to overtake members of the middle lane owner's club, I just pass then on the inside. If I had room to pass on the inside, then they had enough room/time to move back themselves & I'd have passed in lane 2.

This was also the M5, but just north of Gloucester. Maybe it was his daughter ;D

Except on the M25, the undertaking maneuver is illegal and you will receive a penalty notice if seen doing it I'm afraid! ::) ::) ;) ;)
-
i think the middle lane is for caravaners ;D ;D ;D
-
I thought undertaking was illegal full stop...? I would never sit behind someone for 5 or 6 miles, if they dont move withing a mile at most then I will undertake or overtake. It's amazing that right after you undertake they suddenly notice there is a lane to the left of them and it isnt a "lorry lane" ::)

Not on the M25 were it is almost impossible in places not to, like the Leatherhead, Heathrow, M4 interchange section, where traffic in each lane can vary speeds with other lanes, to the extent you all end up undertaking! This is accepted by police patrols providing you are not driving recklessly, jumping from one lane to another, around traffic, at high speed and of course breaking the 70 (80!! ::) ::) ::)) mph limit. ;) ;)
-
I've come to the oppinion that some folk are stupid, thick, ignorant, clots, brain dead & need to be put down :) :)
-
It when you come up behind them and they just seem to ignore you completly and that just makes it even worse .
I had one last night on the A34 just before junction 9 a little car indicated to change to outer lane no other cars about except me gaining rapidly and it came out despite me flashing main beam before it pulled out , yes I was going quickly but there was no reason whatso ever for it to change lane , it did eventually realise I was there and pulled back in and stayed there >:(
And the other thing is front fog/driving lights on >:(

You get them sitting in lane 4 going towards Yarkshire on the M62 when there's nothing else on the road .... apart from me going passed them in lane 1 ;) ;) ;) They look at you ..... and stay exactly where they are.

Maybe we should organise a group buy on some strobe lights for the grills? That would soon get them to pull over... Would be a bit of a hassle putting a shirt and hi vis vest on every time I drive though ;D

I went to my local Army Surplus on sunday to look the tools & they have police uniforms in & i reckon you could just about kit yourself out with what they have.

This one goes down to TrafPol interpretation of both your driving and the law...
Highway Code Rule Number 268:
"Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake."
I have asked this question to Hampshire TrafPol in the past and their answer surprised me somewhat!
What constitutes a queue of traffic?
Answer: 1 Car!!! :o :o :o
So essentially, and this was the answer I got, if you are travelling at a constant speed you can pass on the inside, as long as you aren't weaving from lane to lane.
Personally I wouldn't want to push my luck with it but...

Me too actually.... Like I said, it was an answer from an officer in Hampshire, admittedly quite a while back, and I wouldn't want to try it ::) ::)

Having said I undertake them, I only do it prove a point on an otherwise empty motorway. It's not the kind of thing you'd be doing at tea time on the M60/busy motorway of your choice!
-
Yep they are a nightmare and i normally either undertake them or overtake in lane 3 and go straight back to lane one and flash my hazards or if really pi55ed off give them the bird..........
One of my pet hates and so annoying >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
2nd only to tailgating...... i have a classic approach to these people though ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

PITA when you are towing - I have gone up the inside before

While I can see the annoyance factor in encountering someone who has obviously sucked the driving examiner off (and swallowed) in order to get a license, why get worked up about it?

This is my understanding, on dual carriageways and motorways, as long as you are not weaving from one to another lane................. :)

These idiots make my blood boil (not hard). I know I shouldn't but I get right up their arse, headlights on main beam, and hand pressed firmly on the horn.
I have actually done that for about three minutes, until my missus nearly died of embarassment, but the tinker moved!
Addendum: If I happen to notice that the driver is a hairy arsed gorilla, I always calculate if my top speed is greater than his...just in case. ::)

Afaik undertaking is illegal-end of,but I have done it quite a few times and dont see any good reason not to.It works well enough in the US after all.
Life is too short to spend miles stuck behind some brain dead retard who shouldnt be on the road, when there is an empty lane 6 feet to your left. ;)

Well alot of the main roads here are between a and b roads so they take alot of traffic and can easily take 60 and then you have some thingy holding everbody up.
I'd say just as many accidents are caused by people like that >:( >:(

If they are doing that speed, and you have enough visibility to overtake, it is easier as you just drop down / kick down and you are past!! :o :o
It's when they are doing say 55 mph that it is harder, as you have to really kick down accelerating to speeds well above the speed limit ( ::)) to safely get past, hitting possibly 85 - 90 before quickly knocking back to the legal limit ::) ::) ::) ;)

If you truly do behave like that, then I sincerely hope that someone takes you out before you end up killing someone.

I woudn't overtake at that speed (nothing to do with me driving a 4 pot ::) ), its not too slow to risk, and I've seen a couple of near misses from that :o :o

If you have the adequate visibility that your maneuver will require, the road space, and the experience to handle the situation coolly, then it is not dangerous ;) ;).

Well visability can be a challange on Irish roads as well as road space.
Although I do handle situations very coolly ::)

That works both ways though. I've had HGV's have a go at overtaking me & the caravan ........ everyone HAS to be in front of the caravan, don't they! ...... on a down hill section of a dual carraigeway. My cruise has been set & my speed hasn't altered. He's ran out of steam as the road goes back up hill and so eventually pulls back in behind. He's had a clear view of what the road's going to do ..... but apparently it's my fault that he's not been able to overtake. :-? :-? :-?

i must admit i hug the middle lane
but at 90mph where i can
if i come to a car that is only doing 50/60mph in the middle lane and the slow lane is clear i get the lights flashing to get them over
i hate it having to break for people doing 50mph on the motorway
if they can't do the motorway speeds they should not be on the motorway in the first place :y

we have one member who drives an unmarked car, and has been known to use the blues when he shouldnt, you never know who the car in front / behind is, there are an awful lot of innocent looking cars that arent out there. :y

you not talking about the 'special ones' you were using at York?
Misunderstood then ;)
Aint worth the hassle in my mind, lane hogging arseholes wont / dont learn, just pull over and overtake....and pull back straight to lane 1.
Lifes to short to let idiots like them get you down, far too much real stuff to worry about.

You ever stopped to think they may be doing 50 for a reason?
For example....
They could have just passed their test, and are possibly nervous at higher speeds.
They could be elderly, and have therefore adjusted their driving style to suit their reactions.
etc, etc.
If people worried more about themselves instead of trying to issue summary justice in the form of "getting right up their arse, headlights on main beam, and hand pressed firmly on the horn for 3 minutes non stop", I expect there would be considerably less accidents than what there are at present.
PS
The above ain't a pop at you by the way Nick, but some of the $hit I've read on this thread really gets on my tits.

but you're supposed to 'keep left' what ever speed you're doing.
... And you are far less likely to attract the unwanted attentions of PC Plod if you are driving in the left hand lane than the overtaking lane - whatever your speed.
Much of the problem is that Plod sees these 'middle lane hoggers' as 'safe drivers', as they drive well inside the speed limit and force other drivers to do the same. The fact that they force other drivers to break the law is a bonus to them, as it increases fine revenue. >:(
Another problem is that driving in the left hand lane needs more brain power, as there will be more vehicles to overtake, and without thinking ahead it is easy to end up stuck behind a slow moving truck whilst white vans and Reps in Mondeos stream past, unwilling to let anyone into the middle lane (just in case you get to their customer before they do - perhaps ?). ::)

Ref the highlighted part - utter, pure, unadulterated 'dangle berries', in my opinion. ;D
Trafpol/Police purpose is, in general, road safety and the keeping of the highways and trunk routes free flowing, with the widest safety margins for all.
To think that middle lane hogging is encouraged in order to increase camera revenue is as sad as it is deluded....
-
My take on this emotive subject.
The Highway Code. Whilst not 'law' per se, it is the guidelines that Police and Court take into consideration when reviewing the standard of driving of a case.
Overtaking rule 267
Do not overtake unless you are sure it is safe and legal to do so. Overtake only on the right. You should:-
check your mirrors,
take time to judge the speeds correctly,
make sure that the lane you will be joining is sufficiently clear ahead and behind,
take a quick sideways glance into the blind spot area to verify the position of a vehicle that may have disappeared from your view in the mirror,
remember that traffic may be coming up behind you very quickly.
Check all your mirrors carefully. Look out for motorcyclists. When it is safe to do so, signal in plenty of time, then move out. Ensure you do not cut in on the vehicle you have overtaken.
Be especially careful at night and in poor visibility when it is harder to judge speed and distance.
rule 268
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.
A couple of things there.
Congested conditions is not a queue of one. It means city commute type traffic, travelling at less than 30 or so, not busy roads where all lanes are full but travelling at circa 60 - 80!!
Bottom line, drive safely and be considerate of other road users. Some plonkers may well spoil your day by hogging a lane, changing lanes without checking mirrors or using indicators, brake suddenly for no reason etc etc etc. It means look after number one - yourself - by ensuring that your driving standards are better than those you are critical of. ;)
-
What really frustrates me on this matter is that the Highways Agency throw these massive fancy signs up on the side of the road and display gems such as:
"DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE"
Is it not a bit late if you are driving down the motorway pissed?
When there are no accident notices, traffic updates etc., why not have the signs displaying:
"STAY IN LEFT LANE UNLESS OVERTAKING"
Would this not go some way to highlighting the problem of these middle-lane driver, whom I honestly believe don't even realise that they are doing it.
Just my 2p :y

I have seen someone pulled, presumably, for hogging the middle lane of the M4 ..... that was looooooong before Gatsos. :y

I'm sure I've already seen that ...... A1/M1????

Brilliant! I have never seen it myself, but I don't see any reason why it shouldn't be on every sign unless there is something more important to display!

I was recently travelling in moderate to heavy traffic on the M6 when I watched a Volvo saloon go from Lane 1 across to Lane 3 where I was. I was making steady progress on Lane 2 traffic and was under 70mph with a reasonable braking distance (probably not the full highway code, but by no means was I sitting on someone's tail). How do I know - well the Volvo just about took the back end of the guy slightly ahead of me in Lane 2 and was fogging my front bumper with the cloud of black smoke coming from his exhaust. You could probably have just about slid a sheet of A4 between his bumper and mine.
Impressive move, NOT. I flashed the guy twice and then held them on for a couple of seconds. No hand gestures, no horn, and probably a good job because a couple seconds later they flashed a little light of their own. I'd just twigged that it was two up, and had a branch of Maplins stuck to the dashboard and windscreen.
POLICE in nice red LED's popped up in the back window. No Blue/Two's (unless they don't have rear facing blue strobes) and they floored it.
There's more and more of these unmarked motors flying about the place. Glad I kept relatively calm and didn't give them the finger or anything :)
-
Saw an unmarked Fiat Croma estate yesterday here in Spain all kitted out with the latest video gear for catching motoring miscreants. It even had two "ugly baby" screens in the rear side passenger window so you couldn't see in! Bet they didn't use it to catch the English guy in his Ferrari doing 160 mph on the motorway here the other day!
As far as middle lane hogs are concerned there are a number of factors
1. Some people are lazy and drive on autopilot in the middle lane.
2. Some people think they have paid their whack so they can drive how they like.
3. Some people don't care a damn about others ( learnt from Thatchers day I am afraid)
4. Roads have too much traffic on them.
Spanish drivers in the main only use the outside lane for overtaking and then get back in promptly.

IME so do the French
-
if i come to a car that is only doing 50/60mph in the middle lane and the slow lane is clear i get the lights flashing to get them over
i hate it having to break for people doing 50mph on the motorway
if they can't do the motorway speeds they should not be on the motorway in the first place :y
And nice tits they are too. :-*

......
In that case they should be sitting doing 50 in the left lane ::)
Or even the local A or B road! :y
Or even pedalling their trike round the garden.

For whatever reason, nobody is perfect Ron.
If you truly believe that driving like a schmuck in order to prove (or make) a point to another road user is acceptable....then you are nothing less than a schmuck yourself.

As above.
If you pulled the old "right up my ar$e, horn on for 3 minutes" trip with me, I'd bury you at the first available oppertunity.
This wouldn't be because I'm an unreasonable animal, it would be because you are nothing short of a cu[ch329]t who obviously no consideration for the shortcomings of others, as well as no respect for the safety or well being of anybody else around them.

Regardless of views on the "middle lane hogger" Andy (they annoy me just as much as the next person), driving like a cu[ch329]t just to make a point simply makes the aggressor the bigger cu[ch329]t IMO.
EVERYBODY fooks up more than once in their driving career, but putting others at risk to prove they know better makes them the biggest cu[ch329]ts ever.
The ironic thing is, anybody with more than one working brain cell knows that the truly good driver just deals with the perceived problem rather than trying to impress a point upon others.
-
killerwatt, the word censor is there for a reason... Whilst it's perfectly clear how you feel this is a public forum and we really would prefer it if you let it do it's job and not cheat it so you can use a certain 4 letter word which many people, including myself, find very crass and unnecessary!
Please can you modify your above posts to remove it before this thread gets locked/deleted for the use of it :y :y :y

KillerWatt - why so angry?
Don't think there is any need for the "c" word so many times if at all. I swear just as much as the next man but never ever use that word.
I think you are being a little aggressive. Don't want to start an argument, just friendly advice! :y
EDIT: Beaten to it by Lazydocker!

It's just another word from the Oxford English mate.
If it has offended you personally, then I apologise.
What I find more offensive though is that the $hit hits the fan when you mention that bent software can be found on the internet (and the post is subsequently removed because OOF Admin are worried about their reputation)...yet you can admit to being a complete schmuck with regard to preservation of life and nobody seems to give a toss (http://www.natadsltest2.clara.co.uk/img/loco.gif)

I'll tell you what angers me with regard to dicks like STMO123.....my 17 year old nephew had a professional motocross career destroyed by a knob just like him.
Rather than account for the shortcomings of somebody who was new to road riding, some knob who thought he knew better decided to make a point and subsequently fooked somebody else for life.
Thats what pi$$es me off mate!

A few weeks ago things started getting heated on here and got out of hand for a while. It gave the admins such a headache that I believe they were close to pulling the plug altogether. The forum rules tell us to keep it polite, pleasant, legal, clean etc; this thread seems to be heading in the same direction as the ones which caused the problem last time, imo we should do the grown up thing and knock it on the head.

The man who openly admits to driving "right up someones arse, while flashing the headlights and sounding the horn for 3 minutes non stop" is suggesting that others may be an imbecile?????
Dude, lay off the non prescription drugs for 24 hours and then read what you have written.
If what you originally wrote is true (and you said it was), then you need to be banned for life.....because that attitude is going to end up taking someones life.

Maybe, but I'm not the ben zonah who obviously doesn't give a toss for the safety of others when I'm in charge of almost 2 ton of metal.
I'm just glad that there is 208.7 miles between us, because that kind of distance means there is a fair chance I won't be sharing the same bit of tarmac with your lunatic self at any given point in time (which means my family get to live).

Tell you what biscuit boy, I can normally forget bell-ends like you an hour after I've gone to work.
For some strange reason though, your selfish attitude has got to me...so heres what I propose...
You tell me what meet you intend to be at next (I can't imagine you driving too far to be honest given the cost of petrol)...and I'll be there so you can repeat the same rubbish you've typed here to my face.
Of course if you don't have the nads for that, I can always get the RK details of your cars you've posted on the net from the DVLA for £2.50...and we'll take it from there.

The software issue is something you obviously don't know about... The Volvo Forum moderators had some serious trouble over legal issues and had to close. I, along with many, wouldn't like to see the moderators in any trouble whatsoever... We are a friendly bunch and perhaps you've just had a couple of off days but TBH your attitude stinks. I find it hard to believe that you have no understanding of the legal issues behind hosting such a site but it is, at the end of the day, the moderators of this forum who would come under legal attack for posts contained herein.
No discussion of acquiring or distributing copyrighted material. If you legally own/licenced the material, thats fine.
Use this area to talk about anything you like, but keep it pleasant, clean and polite and LEGAL please.
If you can't abide by these simple requests from the owners/moderators of the site then, quite frankly, leave.
I wouldn't normally put something in such strong terms but this is a friendly, family friendly site. You have just vented your anger and been downright rude. >:( >:( >:(

Where is the threat of violence?
I've offered the man the chance to air his views (which I freely admit irk me) face to face.
I don't know what world you live in, but in my world, disagreeing with someone doesn't mean you have to smack them no matter how heated the conversation gets.
If anything, it is his comments since that have been provocative and somewhat childish, but I have chosen to ignore them.
