Title: Great Holiday!!
Post by: mike213735 on 12 May 2009, 17:13:20
Hello all,

I think itīs really sad that I am holidaying here in the Costa Del Sol in 27-28 degrees and all I can do is hunt the internet connection down to let you lot know how its going, especially after I went out of my way to leave the Blackberry at home.
So anyway, itīs hot, food in the (all inclusive) hotel is great and we are all relaxing.

I am missing driving my MV6, but I think she may be coming over with us soon as my parents may well buy out here and we will drive down to visit them (oh, could that be another Reading meet cruise?).

OK see you all soon...

Mike

Andy - what are you waiting for? Unleaded is around 95 cents a litre and most roads are empty. Great scenery, historic sights and food and weather. It was blue sky, sun and not too hot today! You could do a Parador touring holiday if the dosh was there. They are top flight hotels in castles etc.

In the past we did Iberian motoring holidays including a 3 week one where we averaged more than 10 hours driving a day.

El Varche

PS Over 50% of the paltry 150 fixed Spanish speed cameras are apparenetly located in the Costa del Sol

In all seriousness, I for one would love to drive down to here. Always wanted to do a drive through France and right down to the south of Spain.
I looked at ferry crossings earlier this year and it was about 96 pounds (canīt find the pound sign on this keyboard) to cross from Dover to Calais. That crossing would give us a great drive. Or would could go Plymouth to Santander which would make less of a drive, but more expensive on the crossing.
Seriously though, perhaps we should give this some thought and discussion!!!

Thanks
Mike

I drove to alicante last july and the drive through france and into spain was the easiest drive i have ever done, the roads were clear and saw no road works and made the journey in 2 days with one overnight stop near the french/spanish border. The weather was fantastic and the food magic.I recomend that you do the drive as it is cheaper to drive than the ferry to bilbao or santandar.

guys sorry to disagree, but driving on french motorways is as boring as it can get. excellent, straight, wide, smooth, roads, many of them with not much traffic. You put the cruise control on aprox. 137-138km/h and can go to sleep. Much better to take time and explore their 'A' roads. Much less risk of radar and can be very fun to drive on.

Much nicer drive when your not on a card ;) :y Used to do it once a month to a specialist beef farm right down south. Halling 21 ton of hanging beef from the deep south of spain back to Brum isn't fun  :-/ Nearly always took my 24 hours there though ;D

It was always the stretch from Dortmund to Hanover that had me noddin'! What a tedious road :-?

Tolls cost money but at least they stop you from falling asleep.
Just kidding - obviously it is another advantage of using their still excellent and often very empty 'A' roads.

Just a quick budget note here, our drive from Durham to Pals - Northern Spain, just down the coast from Estartit - cost Ģ600 last year. Tolls, fuel, one overnight stop each way, insurance and breakdown cover ( and we needed it ). Priced the flights, car hire earlier this year - before being made redundant - and they came to Ģ136 flights, ( thats for me and her, Ģ68 each return, Newcastle / Girona ) Ģ130 Focus for 9 days, quite a difference. If we were able to afford to go at all this year I would still prefer to drive, fantastic roads, and Paris is not the nightmare everyone says it is. Enjoy.
