van in front of me hit a car and drove off, mate sitting next to me said he got the number while i took a photo but it was a bit far to see the reg. i knocked at the mans house and told him and i called the police who said the reg didnt exist on the van. we offered the police the picture so they could get the reg number but they wasnt interested and told him to just go through his inurance. im trying to help the poor bloke so can anyone suggest how i can get the reg number as its at a bit of a distance on the picture

Only thing I can think of is something like Photoshop and zoom in... But it probably wont be clear enough :-/ :-/

Would it help if we had a look?

Looked at it in Photoshop and even sharpening it doesn't reveal the plate. I guess you were just too far away. Shame. :(

You should change the settings in your phone Richie, the W850i can take much better pictures than that.

Richie, email me the original file....not the re-sized one (which that appears to be)

Of course if the police had been interested they can use special enhancing equipment as they do for major crimes!
The problem is now they have not got the time or resources to chase limited return cases, with all the paperwork involved, such as that type of alleged 'hit and run', thanks to our wonderful politicians. If the 'hit and run' had involved a person, then a full investigation would commence. But for property.......forget it! It is left to the insurance company to settle. ::) ::)
PS If the police have already got the reg., as you say they stated it did not exist, what is the enhancement going to prove? The van is no doubt carrying false number plates, being either stolen or unregistered, so those plates would have been removed by now with a new set put on. Try tracing that van now....!! As said, the police will not use valuable resource to solve that one. They will just wait for that van to 'turn up' on another inquiry if and when.

This is what happens when you start trying to f**k people over with crap like congestion charges, or issuing parking tickets to them when they have only pulled over for 30 seconds to answer the phone.
As the government tries to recoup even more money by adding things like SPECS all over the place, the number of incidents where false plates are involved will simply rise.

if the pixel resolution is low I'm not sure :-/
but there are other ways to solve ..if this is a service van police can check which services pass from that road in that hour..

i cant, i deleted loads of stuff this morning off me phone and i sent it straight to photobucket from the sony suite last night :(

Had a phone call this morning from the fella who had his car hit. turns out the bloke who did it lives no more than 60ft away from him. he denied it at first saying it wasnt him, with blue paint all over the side of his van that matches the vectra. then he said he may of hit it and said there was no cars or witnesses about and he sat looking for 10 mins to see where the owner lives. refused to give his insurance details. the bloke went to ring the police so the young lad gave in and admitted it. he was pi$$ed when he knocked which was at 8.30am this morning. so guessing he was drunk when he hit it and drove off. the owner asked me to call round and gave me 3 bottles of good wine, and now knows im a carpenter and has a bit of work for me in the next few weeks renewing his garage roof for him and a few doors to put on.
Alls well that ends well i guess. :y :y
